Lads & Lassies,

Whilst many of us are rightly angry that our fellow fans were hurt in Bratislava, and that Mr Fearon sees fit to make a sick joke out of it, I would urge you to desist from posting info that could embroil others who have done no wrong.

We have an ongoing situation whereby a member of this board continues to be intimidated by a sinister individual on the GAA Board, and we will not be party to anything of a similar nature....knowingly, or unknowingly.

which one of you lot is sinister?

Glentoran v Bangor now on Sunday

The JJB Sports Premiership game between Glentoran and Bangor is to become the first Irish League football fixture to be played on a Sunday.

Both clubs agreed the move after the match was unable to be played on Saturday because of a waterlogged pitch at the Oval due to the heavy rainfall.

An amendment was made to Irish Football Association rules last year year to allow Sunday games if both clubs agree.

The game will kick-off at 1500 BST on Sunday 7 September.

The pitch at the East Belfast venue was declared unplayable following a pitch inspection on Saturday morning.

Speaking to the BBC, Bangor secretary Jim Steed said his club was "very glad to be part of such a historic day".

"There was no way the game could go ahead on Saturday and Bangor are happy enough to get the game played and out of the way.

"Both clubs already have a backlog of fixtures and the Bangor directors and Marty Quinn are happy to play the game on Sunday.

"I received a phonecall from Alison Brownlee of Glentoran at about 1130 BST on Saturday, saying that the two managers had been in touch with a view to playing the game on Sunday, weather permitting.

"I think it could be a great day for Irish League football and I think there will be a good crowd," he added.

Dear Mr. Sir,

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE-STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL

I am Dr. Bakare Tunde, the cousin of Nigerian Astronaut, Air Force Major Abacha Tunde. He was the first African in space when he made a secret flight to the Salyut 6 space station in 1979.

He was on a later Soviet spaceflight, Soyuz T-16Z to the secret Soviet military space station Salyut 8T in 1989. He was stranded there in 1990 when the Soviet Union was dissolved. His other Soviet crew members returned to earth on the Soyuz T-16Z, but his place was taken up by return cargo.

There have been occasional Progrez supply flights to keep him going since that time. He is in good humor, but wants to come home.

In the 14-years since he has been on the station, he has accumulated flight pay and interest amounting to almost $ 15,000,000 American Dollars. This is held in a trust at the Lagos National Savings and Trust Association. If we can obtain access to this money, we can place a down payment with the Russian Space Authorities for a Soyuz return flight to bring him back to Earth.

I am told this will cost $ 3,000,000 American Dollars. In order to access the his trust fund we need your assistance.

Consequently, my colleagues and I are willing to transfer the total amount to your account or subsequent disbursement, since we as civil servants are prohibited by the Code of Conduct Bureau (Civil Service Laws) from opening and/ or operating foreign accounts in our names.

Needless to say, the trust reposed on you at this juncture is enormous. In return, we have agreed to offer you 20 percent of the transferred sum, while 10 percent shall be set aside for incidental expenses (internal and external) between the parties in the course of the transaction. You will be mandated to remit the balance 70 percent to other accounts in due course.

Kindly expedite action as we are behind schedule to enable us include downpayment in this financial quarter.

Please acknowledge the receipt of this message via my direct number 234   9-234-2220 only.

Yours Sincerely, Dr. Bakare Tunde

General discussion / RTE archive
August 18, 2008, 11:05:32 AM
Hiya,
does anyone know if the archives on RTE are encrypted/streamed or are they simply downloaded to the temp files directory?

Im trying to get a hold of the match from Sat, but am being blocked by the firewall. In some cases these players download the media to the temp folder, which can be copied etc.

Has anyone tried/achieved this?

Thanks

General discussion / Birthdays at work
July 29, 2008, 12:11:58 PM
in england, if its your birthday your expected to bring cakes etc to work to hand out to your work colleagues. Despite being here a considerable amount of years, Ive not really got my head around the concept of bribing people to wish you a happy birthday.

Is this done in Ireland? If anything I would be expecting my colleagues to bring me something?

Iris Robinson invited to debate Gay Pride event

By Deborah McAleese
Friday, 25 July 2008
Belfast Telegraph

Iris Robinson has been invited by members of the gay community to a public debate where she can explain her controversial remarks about homosexuality.

The Pride Talks Back event has been organised by Pride and is a debate on social, political and cultural life in the Northern Ireland gay and lesbian community with a panel consisting of local activists, politicians, clergy and the PSNI.

The debate will discuss areas such as mental and sexual health, religion and theology, policing and human rights.

Mrs Robinson has also been invited to this year's Pride parade in Belfast.

A spokesman for the DUP said however that the First Minister's wife is currently out of the country and will be unable to attend.

Mrs Robinson sparked controversy after stating in a parliamentary debate that homosexuality is "viler" than child sex abuse.

In a u-turn she told the Belfast Telegraph she meant homosexuality and child abuse were "comparable", and later said her comments had been inaccurately transcribed in the record of a Grand Committee debate.

Hansard, which publishes transcripts of all public debates in UK government, said it was happy the transcription was accurate after reviewing tapes.

Andy Thompson, chairman of Pride, said the debate would have been a good opportunity for her to clarify her position.

"All of the other political parities in Northern Ireland will be represented during the debate on July 28. The DUP has never attended," he said.

Mr Thompson added: "I think Iris Robinson should really be making an effort to attend. If she is genuine about being misrepresented in her remarks then this is a perfect opportunity for her to clarify that. This is the perfect opportunity for her to hear about the hurt and harm she is causing people.

"Young people across Northern Ireland are struggling with their sexuality and these sort of remarks are leaving vulnerable people like that feeling there is something seriously wrong with them. She is causing undue stress and harm to young gay and lesbian people."

Mrs Robinson has said her remarks are based on scriptures and that she is not hate-mongering.

She also said she cannot leave her Christian beliefs at the door when she goes into politics.

The DUP has accused the media of unfairly harassing the Strangford MP.

The Scottish National Party have overturned a 13000 Labour majority last night. Huge ramifications for Brown et al.

Having a read through some of the "learned" musing on Slugger, they estimate that it will have huge implications on the union, and that Scotland is on a one way street to breaking away, and furthermore will have an affect on our current wee dispute....

Inetersting times.

With the usual soundbites of celebrating our heros from this part of the uk etc, all being dressed up beautifully, but is there an ulterior motive at work? some sort of compensation for a few banned orange marches?

Maybe the 12th, rememberance day etc isnt enough flag waving for one year?

Can anyone see marty and gerry throwing their weight behind the proposal? or more so will any objection carry any weight?

pinched from Slugger

http://extras.timesonline.co.uk/irishdoc.pdf

summation as follows:

The Sunday Times has published Platinum One's report on how to transform the fortunes of domestic football on this island and, not surprisingly, it involves the creation of an All-Ireland Premier League. The plan would see the league run along the lines of the English and Scottish Premier Leagues which would have a prize money of nearly €4m (£3.2m) a year, this at a time when many clubs on both sides of the border are struggling to remain in existence, not least Sligo Rovers and Galway United. The document makes for some sobering reading.

It is hoped that the league could be running as early as August of next year with seven clubs from south of the border and three from north of it, including Derry City. The teams from the Republic invited to join are Bohemians, Drogheda United, St Patrick's Athletic, Galway United, Limerick 37, Cork City and Shamrock Rovers. They would join Linfield, Glentoran and Derry City.

The man behind the idea, Fintan Drury, is hoping to remove the running of the domestic game at the highest level from the two football associations, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and the Irish Football Association (IFA) as soon as possible.

"Those charged with the stewardship of the game have failed in their responsibility to clubs despite the dire warnings of the Genesis report in September 2005," he said.

"It is our belief that circa 80% of the clubs in the domestic leagues are in dire financial difficulties and the majority are technically insolvent."

The report states that football is up against a very professionally run GAA as well as an ever-improving IRFU in the battle for fans, sponsorship and media rights, a battle football is currently losing. Without a professional all-island league in place, Drury believes domestic football will never be able to compete. The report lists all those clubs that have struggled in recent years:

- Examiner appointed to Shamrock Rovers
- Omagh folded after 43 years' existence
- Crisis club Waterford prepare fire sale to secure future
- Coleraine given survival chance
- Bohemians confirms financial difficulties
- Athlone Town reveals "frightening losses"
- High Court petition to wind up Cork City football club
- Dublin City Football Club goes bust with debts of almost €1.5 million.
- Debts cost Shelbourne dear
- Mathews may quit as Longford woes mount
- Ards pull out of running for new league
- Law moves on directors of bust club Coleraine FC

The Executive Summary highlights the plight of football here and how it believes the league will work:

- Domestic football in Ireland is beset by grave financial difficulties. The prospects
for the game are completely hopeless. Without an urgent and radical overhaul the
game on both parts of the island will continue to fail.

- Clubs are haemorrhaging money. Those clubs at the top of the game, which
aspire to improving standards, cannot lift income levels to match their
commitment. Most of the smaller clubs are similarly "stretched".

- Initiatives to improve matters already taken or planned by the two Associations
have had little or no effect.

- The game can only support one professional league on the island combining the
best run and supported clubs from the Irish League with the appropriate mix of
clubs in the Republic in an all island league.

- The proposed All Ireland Premier League would start in August 2009 with 10 full
time professional clubs invited to participate.

- In year three two more clubs – one from each jurisdiction - would join the AIPL.

- This league would be the top of the professional game in Ireland. The remaining
clubs would compete in the League of Ireland and the Irish League and could, as
and from year three, qualify to play in the AIPL.

- The new league would provide a full-time professional competition for players,
spectators, sponsors and broadcasters.

- Most critically the new league would attract many of our better players to stay in
Ireland even if the very best talent continued to go to big clubs in Britain.

- It would also mean that more of the better players who are good enough to play at
the top level would go to Britain later than they do currently.

- The AIPL would be an independent entity run by a private company under licence
from the FAI and IFA each of which would have a representative on its board.
The independence of the AIPL would mean the autonomy of the two associations
would be protected. No other aspect of the game in Ireland – North or South -would
be affected by this move. All revenues generated by the AIPL would be put back into the clubs

- Clubs would need to meet very strict Licensing criteria as set by UEFA through
the Associations Club Licensing Departments, to qualify for the AIPL including
meeting financial demands that would protect the League against unanticipated
difficulties.

- Four European places would go the League.

- The AIPL clubs would remain affiliated to their respective associations and would
play in their annual Cup competitions.

- Players would be registered with their Association and approved to play in AIPL

- AIPL clubs would be obliged to play in an AIPL underage league that would
provide the natural link between the schoolboy and the professional games.

- The critical determinant of success with any professional sporting endeavour is
the reaction of fans, broadcasters and sponsors. We know that the current
offering is failing to generate enthusiasm with any and all of these audiences and
without radical and speedy change the professional game here is doomed to fail.

Note: Drury's plan involves the continuation of both national teams, the League of Ireland and the Irish League.

Horrific, but what else could the people do? Surely the authorities should have cleared the beach, or at least attended the bodies?
