Post by: WT4E on November 25, 2021, 09:16:28 AM

I've a Thinkpad X280 for work, probably closer to £600, but a great computer that I couldn't recommend high enough, considering the ones I've bought in the past for the kids this hasn't let me down, though in fairness we change them every 3 years, but it's never had any issues

Stay away from HP.

Bought two in the last decade or so. Both eventually came apart at the hinges, even though they were different models more than five years apart. I've never seen that in any other brand.

My last couple have been Dell. No complaints, and they have fairly cheap base models if your budget is limited.

I bought this, and it just arrived with me today.  Haven't used it yet.

Thought the spec (processor / RAM) was very high for £600 in the Black Friday sale.

If you're willing to forgo pre-installed windows there are some good value options on pcspecialist.

Got a £350 machine without OS and installed xubuntu and it's working great. I know it's not for everyone though.

Try laptopsdirect. For that kind of money you should be able to get i5 processor or equivalent and 8gb RAM easy enough. Dont be afraid of refurbished models. They are absolutely fine and there is serious money to be saved.

That is excellent value. 16gb RAM for under £600, plus a good mid range processor. Only thing lacking for me is a dedicated graphics card but thats not necessary unless you are using it for gaming.

Bought one of these lads up in Finaghy, refurbed but not a scratch on it, 3 months warranty and a fraction of the price for a similar spec'd machine from PC world/Curry's who have bumped their prices up big time.

Windows laptops are much of a muchness across the board. There is little to no difference between manufacturers in the internal components and it is mainly the look and feel that determines quality. Most Dell's for example are cheap and the keyboard and shell of their laptops reflect this. They are still a decent enough laptop depending on if you are using it every day.

The main things to look for are processor & RAM. The bigger the better that your budget allows. I'd also recommend something with a solid-state hard drive (SSD). Most people these days store their documents etc on the cloud in Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive etc so you don't need a massive hard drive. You are much better with a smaller SSD say 256GB or 512GB than a larger 2TB regular hard drive.

Personally, I'd buy a Macbook of some description. But it all depends if you are a power user or not. A Mac for me will outlast at least 2 if not 3 Windows-based laptops so while it is more of an upfront investment it'll be as cheaper over time. It has been a while since I used a Windows-based machine so things might have changed a bit on that front.

Anyone familiar with laptop sales during Christmas? I am going to purchase a Dell - should I wait until January for possible sales or there seems to be discounts all year round now anyway? Should I go through Dell website or anyone recommend any other good sites?

Getting new kitchen in Jan, so been round looking for new appliances and called into Curry's, seen some stuff we were looking to buy and the sales guy said, wait till after xmas, take a picture of the prices we have now and see if they are cheaper in the new year, we'd a few grand ready to buy that day and he didnt have to but hopefully in the new year the prices will be cheaper
