Gerry Marsden will be both mourned and remembered fondly in Liverpool and around the world

A man who brought people together through music

Legend

YNWA Gerry

Absolutely brilliant,best sports song ever?
Mind you - it's a song from the musical Carousel and Gerry never wrote it. But obviously Liverpool fans have made it their own. But he did write Ferry Cross the Mersey which is a great tune. RIP.

Without a doubt. Nothing comes even close to it.

What about 'Put em under pressure'?

That depends on who you support.
Hardly

No other song associated with sport has the real life resonance that YNWA has, few other songs anywhere have its resonance

After Hillsborough it took on exponentially greater meaning, it meant and means something very deep and profound to people - it's a symbol of a community rallying together, a struggle for justice

Liverpool has a greater sense of identity - of social solidarity, of what it is and what it isn't - than anywhere else in England, maybe more than anywhere in Europe

Gerry Marsden's music has been a constant rallying point for that

Birmingham's Keep Right On To The End Of The Road and Hib's Sunshine On Leith  are two that resonate with their supporters every bit as much as YNWA. If you take into account that the vast majority of their supporters come from the respective cities you could argue even more so.
This one is pretty emotional too.

Anyway this should probably be left for another thread.
RIP Gerry.

you're confusing bristol with liverpool WUM
You are well out of touch on that one, BUM.  Liverpool much worse than Bristol.

Don't know the Birmingham one

Didn't know Hibs sang Sunshine on Leith until they beat Rangers in the cup final in 2016

Leeds' Marching On Together and Chelsea's Blue Is The Colour are great football songs but they're unique to those teams

To Win Just Once is a great song in an Irish sporting context

You'll Never Walk Alone is universal, that's the point, everybody knows it - it's Liverpool's but it's also the world's song

And with all due respect to Rodgers and Hammerstein, it will always be Gerry Marsden's song

I nearly prefer it to YNWA

The Hillsborough record version of it is great too

Armamike

A bad few months for LFC losing the likes of Ray Clemence and Gerard Houllier, Michael Robinson and now the great Gerry Marsden. What an anthem.  Few other sporting anthems can touch it for the emotion it stirs up and the bond it builds between supporters and the team.
That's just, like your opinion man.

Very sad about the young Galway fella who died after slipping out walking in the hills with his family. (He was 17 and played for Salthill - Knocknacarra).

I'm surprised there wasn't similar in the Mournes this past while as loads of people were rushing down to climb mountains, they were ill-prepared to do so, for the all important social media photos, despite being told to travel for essential needs only.

Was a young person in the Mournes, madness, I love heading up Donard, but there is a time of year for it, or if you're a seasoned walker with all the kit!
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Ea

I saw a tweet where someone said some young fella wearing trainers and those ankle socks asked him for directions to the Ice House  :-\

Mourne Mountain Rescue were called out 5 times in one day last week:

The Mourne Mountain Rescue Team said it is "concerning" that a number of incidents they have been to lately have involved people "putting themselves at unnecessary and often considerable risk".
