GAA Discussion / Re: Darby's Goal
September 18, 2007, 08:21:19 PM
I seen my first All-Ireland in 1978 at the age of 7. Up to the Darby goal in 1982, i had never seen Kerry lose a Championship match. You can imagine because of not knowing earlier teams/counties that had won AIs i thought that Kerry winning Sam was going to go on forever. Really, it was a momentus occasion in the Country, everybody was so happy to see a different county other than Kerry (and even Dublin) win Sam in such dramatic circumstances.

That Kerry team of the 75-86 era is the best team ever and only for 2 late goals one in the AI of 1982 and one in the Munster Final of 1983 would have won 9 in a row!

Nice attitude Sligonian....
You won't win much support from the rest of Connacht (note the spelling) with comments like that. And maybe you don't want our support, which is fair enough.
But remember that when Mayo (or whoever the Connacht champs are) play in Croke Park, they are the Connacht representatives. So, in a way, they do represent you ;)

Not entirely true anymore with the Back-door. Time for Sligo to continue with the me fein.  ;)

To look at it on a smaller scale, can the Armagh posters tells us has Crossmaglens dominance of Armagh football danaged Armagh football?

Dublin?

Showed excellent potential but still have not reached a AI final!

yea but it was the champs that knocked them out. They then went on to make a laughing stock out of the team you reckon is second best.

Ok so Dublin ran Kerry close, so did Cork earlier on in the championship, running a team close counts for nothing a loss is a loss!

As for not including Mayo or Galway there are none of the above teams that would like to meet either in championship football ;D

LOOK FIRST IS FIRST AND SECOND IS NOWHERE!

Cork were good enough to get to the final, that say what it says about the chasing group.

I have to laugh at the list above

Monaghan beat no-one this year, lost big games to Kerry & Tyrone.
Tyrone lost to an unproven Meath side and have not been at the races for 2 years.
Meath were hammered by Cork and did nothing in the previous last 5 years.
Armagh are in transition and did not win a championship game this year, have been on the slide since 2003.
Derry lost to Monaghan and huffed and puffed against Dublin.
Donegal peaked for the league, fluked a win against Armagh, Hammered by Tyrone, crawled over the line against Leitrim and succumed to Monaghan.
Sligo beat a tired Galway outfit....their AI.

I know the above analysis may be harsh, but starting a discussion such as this to undermine Cork is in the same vain.

Connacht had a golden era during the mid 90's to the early 00's. Mayo, Sligo and to a larger degree Galway held their own. All three counties are now in transition and this often takes time for a re-emergence. The future does not seen all doom and gloom. Galway minors Yesterday, Roscommon Minors 2006. Galway under 21's 2001 & 2004. Mayo under 21's 2006. That added to club success of Salthill, Crossmolina, Ballina. Actually as a footnote; Sligo won their Connacht championship title 10 years after they should have. Sligo's best team since 75 was the 1997-2002 group. and were unlucky that both Mayo and Galway were very strong at the same time. But as the saying goes - "a risen tide lifts all boats".

we have to go open draw, there are only two decent provincial champsd anyway (leinster and Ulster). Munster is just a joke at this stage and Galway v Mayo aint much better.

Hate to tell you but Leinster has not set the world on fire the last 3 years. Dublin have been 10 points better than most teams in the province!

In the championship there has to be the minor prizes to aim for.....ie PROVINCIAL titles- Sligo this year and Westmeath in 2004 value this silverware and I'm sure there are 20 other counties that appreciate winning their Provincial title. Geographically open draw from the start would and could be a nightmare travelling and would also mean straight knock out.....No back door. The Problem with our present system is that no matter how bad kerry are at the begining of the year they are never more than 3 games from an All-Ireland final whereas 3 games will only get an Ulster team to an Ulster final.

I think Kerry can be stopped next year. Id say there will be maybe five teams challenging next year.

Poor attendance from Cork today I though, Kerry completely out numbered them

Cork people are not stupid most of them would have remembered getting hammered outside of Munster over the last couple of years. The media tried to hype the game all week saying Cork would give them a game. Look Mayo people were the same in 2006, most just turned up in (extreme) hope. Unlike Cork, Mayo do not have a hurling team to fall back on!

They were lucky against Monaghan....... very lucky.

Yeah, they were lucky against Cork in the Munster final as well and you seen what happened when they met today!
#11819
Oh we'll hear now from various people from various counties that if their mighty team had not been beaten by an average outfit in the earlier rounds of the championship they would have put up a better performance. Yeah right! if you are not good enough to be there, you are not good enough! Well done Kerry, real Hunger and Skill.

Crawled over the line! I Know these guys are supposed to rise to the BIG occasions, which should mean Argentina and France but at the moment this is hard to see. Being Irish and biased we can only hope this is a glitch on the road to greater things ;D
