Red rags hang from one of the thorn bushes near the mouth of the river.

There's a tradition of washing with a red flannel which is then tied to a thorn. People would have taken a piece of red flannel and dipped it in the waters of the holy river, and they would have rubbed it on their sores, whatever conditions they had. Then they would have hung it on a thorn bush which grew adjacent to the river. Pilgrims believe that skin complaints and other ailments can be cured by a visit to Washingbay.
