A bomb has exploded near a bus stop in a Jewish neighbourhood of Jerusalem, injuring at least 30 people.

Police have described the explosion as a 'terrorist attack', but there has been no claim of responsibility.

Police said the explosion was caused by a bomb planted close to Jerusalem's main conference hall and central bus terminal.

It is the first such bombing in Jerusalem in seven years.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu postponed his departure to Russia after the incident.

Elsewhere, the Israeli city of Beersheva has been hit by two rickets fired from Gaza, leaving one man injured.

The first rocket struck the centre of Beersheva around dawn, slightly injuring one man, while the second, which was fired several hours later, landed harmlessly in an open area.

The army said seven mortars had also landed in Israel.

Hopefully no one is killed.

The tinderbox that is the Middle East seems to be getting out of control on more than one front

General discussion / six county elections 05/05/2011
March 23, 2011, 10:38:13 AM
Last day of the current assembly up in the north.

Whats the predictions of our friends up north in relation to the upcoming assembly elections?

Will the SF machine keep the momentum going or have they gone as far as they can go?
Will the UUP gain any ground on the DUP

Whats the chances of the SDLP winning back some of its nationilist support?

Will a swing to independants happen like what happened in the republic?

How did the present assembly perform during its time in office?

Dermot Earley dies aged 62
Wednesday, 23 June 2010 12:46
The former Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Dermot Earley, has died.

A winner of two GAA All-Stars, he was 62 and had been ill for several months.

He retired early from the Defence Forces earlier this month, although he was not due to stand down until next spring.

AdvertisementAs a young officer, he qualified as a physical education instructor and was one of the first members of the elite army rangers.

He served on many overseas postings, including four years in New York as a senior military advisor at UN Headquarters. He was Chief of Staff for the past three years.

Dermot Earley played Gaelic football with his native Roscommon for 20 years from 1965 to 1985. He was said to be one of the greatest players never to win an All-Ireland medal.

He later went onto manage Roscommon, as well as Kildare where he lived in recent decades.

His son Dermot, who plays with Kildare, has also won two All-Stars and his daughter Noelle is also an All Star.

General Earley is survived by his wife Mary and their six adult children.

In April, he was presented with the Distinguished Service Medal by the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen.

He was succeeded as Chief of Staff on the 14 June by Lieutenant General Sean McCann.

An absolute gentlemen and a great footballer.

May he rest in peace.

General discussion / Doors help needed
May 26, 2010, 11:09:09 AM

A strange request here.

I have doors in the house and i dont like them.
I hated them when they went in but herself liked them but now two years later she hates them now as well.

I want to change them but dont just want to throw the others on the scrap heap as they are good doors its just we dont like looking at them.

Its 13 in all i think with two doubles and the rest singles. The doubles and two singles have spaces for glass designs but we didnt put them in.

I could put them in the buy and sell or something like that but i dont want the hassle of people ringing asking questions and then saying no or people calling to the house and deciding no.

Basically does anyone know any business out there that they know off that might take these doors off my hands for a decent price or give me a good discount on other doors.
Google wasnt a great help so any help appreciated.

De Búrca resigns from Greens, Seanad
Friday, 12 February 2010 09:47
Déirdre de Búrca has announced that she has resigned from the Green Party and Seanad Éireann.

Her resignation is with immediate effect.

In a letter of resignation to Green Party leader John Gormley, Ms de Búrca says she 'can no longer support the Green Party in government, as I believe that we have gradually abandoned our political values and our integrity and in many respects have become no more than an extension of the Fianna Fáil party'.

AdvertisementRead the Ms de Búrca's letter

She claims Fianna Fáil is 'running rings' around the Green Party and continues to take advantage of its inexperience

In the letter she says the Green Party has been 'paralysed' by the rejection of several candidates in the local and European elections last year.

Ms de Búrca stood in the European parliament elections in the Dublin constituency but failed in her bid to get elected.

In the letter Ms de Búrca says she has lost confidence in Mr Gormley. She adds that in his role as leader, he has done a disservice to the party and its members by allowing a 'drift' to occur.

A spokesman for Mr Gormley described Ms de Búrca's decision as disappointing.

He said Green parliamentary party members would meet during the morning to consider the development and the party will respond in due course.

Green Party TD Ciarán Cuffe wished Ms de Búrca well via his Twitter page saying that she 'has been a great campaigner'.

After George jumping ship is this a trend for disillusioned politicians or does this mean the beginning of the end for the current goverment.

Will be interesting to see what the green party respond with.

Supreme Court upholds golf club ban
Tuesday, 3 November 2009 12:32
The Supreme Court has ruled that Portmarnock Golf Club can continue to exclude women as full members because it is exempted under equal status legislation.

The court, by a majority of three to two, upheld a decision by the High Court four years ago and dismissed an appeal by the Equality Authority.

This ruling centred on how a section of the Equal Status Act should be interpreted.

AdvertisementWomen can play golf at the north Dublin course but cannot become full members.

In 2005, the High Court overturned a District Court decision and ruled that Portmarnock was not a discriminating club because its principal purpose was to cater only for the needs of a particular gender, an exemption allowed under the legislation.

The Supreme Court upheld that ruling this morning.

Portmarnock can now continue to be a registered club - meaning it can continue to sell alcohol - without changing its membership policy.

A spokesman for the Equality Authority said the authority welcomed the fact that the Supreme Court had now clarified the law. He said the Oireachtas could now examine whether or not the Equal Status Act needed to be amended.

Joanna McMinn of the Equality Rights Alliance said the law needed to be changed and the decision was a bad day for equality and a bad day for women.

John Quigley, General Manager of Portmarnock Golf Club, said the club was pleased with the court's decision.

A bit of a kick in the stones for the bra burners.

I dont sem to understand this ruling.
They can exclude women from becoming a member on the grounds that membership is soley for one gender.

Well if thats the case can i set up a non femaile club without being brought to court for breach of equality laws?

General discussion / Crime Capitals
October 30, 2009, 09:41:29 AM

Watched this on TV3 last night.

It was all about the limerick gangs.

I have to say these scum have their communities under constant fear. They actually think they are untouchable. They spoke to roy collins father steve and he gave the whole story leading up to roys shooting. Basically the family gave evidence that put one of these scumbags a ten year stint in jail. Outcome was roy was shot in retaliation.

That goes against the whole justice system in this country.

Stephen Geoghan gunned down in awful circumstances and that hoonahan lad hacked to death in southhill and everyone in the area knows who did it but yet the guards cant arrest anyone because the gangs have a mafia style grip on the areas.

What can be done to hurt these scumbags?
These lads have serious motors under them can CAB not do something?

It made my blood boil to see these scum basically exacting terror freely.

General discussion / Will the greens pull the plug?
October 09, 2009, 01:13:34 PM
Semingly in the next hour if agreement isnt reached between the two goverment parties on the programme for goverment, gormley and ryan are resigning their ministerial posts and this will more than likely mean that the party members will vote to leave goverment tomorrow.

The greens are seemingly standing firm on issues such as a total ban on so called blood sports including hare coursing and saying no to health and eduacation cuts.

What will be the outcome?
Will we be voting for a new goverment soon?

General discussion / The west brit thread
September 14, 2009, 10:52:58 AM
Reading the board this morning it has dawned on me ( wee bit slow maybe ) that the board has a significant number (in my mind) of what i would term west brits.

Now west brits to me are people generally from the old pale juistiction with very strong allegiances to the crown of britain possibly passed down through generations who now find themsrlves living in an independant irish state and who also really want back to the pre treaty years.
They want the staus quo retained in the north (god forbid a 32 county republic would isolate them altogether)

They would also probably welcome the head of the royal family of britain with open arms.

I just thought a thread should be set up for gnevin, weareblue wearewhite that plonker myles and those unionist contributors roger and evil genius so they dont feel left out.

As a proud connacht man i wish them all the best and look forward to them contributing their royal views.

General discussion / Is the union on its last legs?
December 03, 2008, 12:52:27 PM
With the increased support for the SNP in Scotland and talk of a possible referendum on independance in scotland, the population divide in the six counties swaying towards a nationlist majority and "home rule" parliments in scotland, wales and the six now in full operation are we looking at the union on its last legs?
Would scotland be economically viable as an independant nation or wales for that matter?
Would a united ireland be a burden or a relief?
Would the British monarchy go into extinction?
Do people really care?
