Its funny, but the quickest way to move a ball up the field and into space for forwards to operate in, has always been to kick pass.

but the easier option is to get teams handpassing the ball to death

The thing is, the Kick pass hasn't been ruled out. It's just managers are now more tactical and they realise that a long hit and hope if there isn't a clear option is madness, as competitive as it might seem to supporters. And to be honest I'm not sure that increased levels of kicking is going to take away the blanket defense. For example if you increase the long range kicking there's more of a chance of the ball breaking loose between the forward and the defender. Therefore it would pay to have extra men back to help swallow up the breaking ball. I understand why people want these rule changes, I just don't see them improving the game, given the tactical nature of coaching now.

I counted two occasions in the first twenty minutes of the McKenna Cup final where the handpass chain exceeded three passes. Handpass heaven?

So why bin the rule if it would never result in a foul?
I said there were two instances in twenty minutes. So that would've been two fouls.

As a matter of how many other fouls in those 20 minutes?
No idea. I was just checking the handpassing stats before I gave up.

On Saturday Central Council lost its nerve on the trial to restrict hand-passing but proceeded with the other four experiments, which may be mildly interesting – although the sinbin is a retrograde step compared to the original black card sanction – but none of which square up to the existential challenge facing football.
Of course there isn't consensus on what exactly that challenge is – the zooming hand-pass-to-kick-pass ratios, ultra-defensive tactics or competitive imbalance at inter-county level – but the signs of flagging public interest, both at the turnstile and remote control, are real.

Very interesting. John Fogarty is one of the best GAA journalists

"The modern game wants the handpass and those that are making the rules and are responsible for them being implemented have conceded that.
"Being of the old school, I have to think there's far too much handpassing. This was an opportunity to restrict it and return to what the game is supposed to be — football. It's so much like European Handball now."
As a regular Croke Park matchgoer, O'Neill was alarmed by what he saw last season. "I would go to most of the Championship matches in Croke Park, not just the Dublin games, and I was never as bored as much at a game in my life as I was last summer.
"Some of those games were very pedestrian and they are following a soccer trend when it's so possession-based.
"A different strategy is needed to entertain the public because over the weekend I saw the TV viewing figures from last year and rugby games are higher than the GAA's. When you think that Gaelic football and hurling are our national games and reflect the wider community, that's worrying.
"But you also hear around the place that Gaelic football is not attractive, among my colleagues and out and about — that seems to be the tone.

Nothing wrong with the rules if you play like the Dubs and Kerry.
And Mayo of course, probably the best team of all to watch.

Football between those 3 is the best game of all. Kerry v Dubs miles better than either of the two 6N rugby games today, and of course different gravy to soccer.
