GAA Discussion / Football qualifier route 2018
April 04, 2018, 12:49:57 PM

Qualifiers format

Twenty eight of the twenty nine teams beaten in the provincial championships enter the All-Ireland qualifiers, which are knockout. Sixteen of the seventeen teams (New York do not enter the qualifiers) eliminated before their provincial semi-finals play eight matches in round 1,
with the winners of these games playing the eight beaten provincial semi-finalists in round 2.
The eight winning teams from round 2 play-off against each other in round 3,
with the four winning teams facing the four beaten provincial finalists in round 4 to complete the double-elimination format.

Well no time to dwell on victory over donegal,it was a great recovery from the connacht final,to be honest yesterday's match was similar to the connacht final in that donegal didn't turn up.
Well now it's kerry, they say if you are going to catch then it's at this stage as they come in cold, cork in fairness showed that were no slouches against mayo,it does add weight to Kerry's munster final victory.I am looking forward to a great game,I just think kerry will use the wide open spaces that will stretch our backline to breaking point.

GAA Discussion / Galway v donegal

Does not seem to be any great interest in this game from both sets of supporters,as a galway man all's I want to see is them be competetive,if they bow out well and good.It has the makings of a good game, the positioning of Michael Murphy will be crucial good god the thought of him in the forward line, against our dodgy backline! The prize for a win for galway is kerry.A donegal win would give them ross/kerry.

GAA Discussion / another new manager for mayo???
June 26, 2017, 02:25:25 PM
Mayo's players had a meeting in Castlebar on June 17, a week after their defeat to Galway in the Connacht Championship semi-final in Pearse Stadium.
The meeting which was reported by The Connacht Telegraph took place the Saturday after their defeat to Galway after a round of club games in the county in which most of the county squad were involved.

The club matches took place at 7:30 that night.

The meeting is believed to have been arranged in order to review their loss to Galway and to clear the air in the panel by allowing all squad members to give their views on the loss.

The report claimed that Mayo's manager Stephen Rochford was fully aware of the meeting, but that he didn't attend.

No details of the meeting were made public but it is understood that it was mainly focused on where the squad is going and how best to regroup after their disappointing loss to the Tribesmen for the second year running.

Sounds very familiar to how holmes/connelley met their Waterloo! Obviously some blame the management for the l' it was only a 1pt match this meeting one would think was to get everyone to pull together and get behind the manager until the end of the qualifiers.the derry match could be interesting after all!

Ignore The Misleading Age Profile - This Dublin Team Are Only Getting Better

When Cormac Costello (22 years old) came on for Kevin McManamon (31) in the fifty-fifth minute of the All-Ireland football final replay against Mayo at Croke Park and almost immediately kicked two points, a shiver went down the spines of every county outside Dublin. It was almost a symbolic five minutes. One of Dublin's greatest players over the past few years and an integral part of their All-Ireland successes in that period had barely broken the seal on his post-match Lucozade by the time his heir was laying waste to the opposition's defence. The message? This Dublin team isn't going anywhere
Average age statistics can be slightly misleading. The average age of Dublin's starting team against Mayo on Saturday was 27 while Mayo's was 26. The average age of Tyrone's starting team against Mayo in the quarter-final was approaching 26. Against Dublin in the last eight, Donegal hovered around the 27 mark. The youthful Tipperary team from their semi-final against Mayo averaged 24-25 years of age, while the comparatively geriatric Kerry side creaked in closer to 29 when they took on Dublin.

Is this an old Dublin team?

Based on all of that, Dublin are actually the second oldest team out of the six sides we might consider the top All-Ireland contenders based on this year. But this belies their true strength in depth. Stephen Cluxton looks destined to carry on bringing up the average age of the side at 35 but if we look at some of the other key players in their All-Ireland victory we can appreciate the fairly remarkable and relatively seamless transition that has occurred in recent years with Dublin.

Dean Rock, one of the top three free-takers in the country alongside Cillian O'Connor and Conor McManus, is 26. Ciaran Kilkenny is 23 and can become one of the greatest half-forwards the game has ever seen, if he is not already; Brian Fenton is the same age and possesses similar potential in midfield. Paul Mannion ditto regarding corner-forward. James McCarthy is 26. John Small and David Byrne are only 23 and 22 respectively and yet neither looked particularly troubled in an All-Ireland final. One might also forget that Jonny Cooper is only 26. And in the crucial final stages, with the game in the melting pot, Costello and later on Eric Lowndes (22) were trusted to guide their side to victory as much as Bernard Brogan (32) and Michael Darragh MacAuley (30).

Philly McMahon, Diarmuid Connolly and Cian O'Sullivan were all absolutely crucial for the Dubs on Saturday and each of them have plenty of miles left on the clock (at 29, 29 and 28 respectively). All three still appear as fresh as when they won their first All-Ireand. Add in Jack McCaffrey (23) and Rory O'Carroll (26) - who was initially supposed to be in New Zealand but, as was later reported, went to Chicago for the summer - and opposition managers must want to cry.

An interesting article from dec 2015
Can touch of All Blacks magic revive Galway footballers?
Tuesday, December 29, 2015Darragh Small

Galway manager Kevin Walsh is hopeful a trainer who played a part in the All Blacks winning the World Cup will provide the Tribesmen with an edge as they bid for glory in 2016.

New Zealander Greg Muller is charged with knocking Galway into shape as they try to end Mayo's five-year dominance in Connacht.

He provided the All Blacks, through his company Pure Athlete, with special bath salts which they used in their recovery between games on their way to retaining the World Cup.

And Muller, who has previously been involved with the New Zealand Elite Forces and who also played a major part in the Auckland Blues Super Rugby winning season in 2003, is hoping to use his vast sporting experience to help Galway next year.

He worked with Connacht Rugby after coming to Ireland and was brought on board last season by Walsh as Galway try to rediscover former glories.

He was chuffed about helping his native country retain the Webb Ellis Cup in October.

"The All Blacks prefer to not over-train but to recover more. They started using our salts. And the fitness trainer rang me and said we need some more, these guys love this stuff," said Muller.

In his second season as the athletic performance coach with the county, the Auckland native is keen to impose his winning philosophy on a team that has not won the Connacht championship since 2008.

And he insists the structures can be put in place to allow Galway to prosper at senior level.

"Once we get these things in place, we could get through and win Connacht titles and really start contesting at All-Ireland level in the next one or two years but in reality, it's probably more of a three to five-year plan.

"They need to hold people in place to allow those fruits to ripen, and that's a huge challenge," he said.

There were 16 All Blacks in the Blues squad that he trained and it was there that he first began to impose his military-esque elite mindset into the sporting stratosphere.

"The words 'elite' and 'world class' are used a lot these days but in reality there are very few that operate at that level.

What I learned in the military is they function with optimum precision, planning and commitment.

They don't accept people putting in mediocre efforts.

"When I started with the Blues, I brought that mindset into their systems. And when I came to Galway I did likewise.

"We have made a lot of changes with Galway. I learned a lot last season just seeing how a GAA team like Galway works.

"Out of season, we put in a lot of work putting new systems in place, and to see the fruits of that, it could take three or four years."
