GAA opens Hall of Fame
Mon, Feb 11, 2013
GAA: Players from the football and hurling teams of the millennium have been inducted into a new GAA Hall of Fame, along with Offaly footballer Tony McTague and Limerick hurler Eamon Cregan.
The Hall of Fame, which will be housed in the GAA Museum at Croke Park, will have two players inducted on an annual basis.
"Former players have a special place in the history of the GAA and nowhere is this captured better than in the GAA Museum where their achievements are highlighted and revered," GAA president Liam O'Neill said this afternoon.
"This new facility will serve as a permanent reminder to the greatness of the players who adorned our game at the highest level. It is important that these players are remembered not only by those who were lucky enough to see them, but crucially by those who did not have that privilege.
"This is one way of assisting in that process and I congratulate them and their families."
Football team of the millennium: Dan O'Keeffe (Kerry); Enda Colleran (Galway), Joe Keohane (Kerry) Seán Flanagan (Mayo); Sean Murphy (Kerry) JJ O'Reilly (Cavan), Martin O'Connell (Meath); Mick O'Connell (Kerry), Tommy Murphy (Laois); Seán O'Neill (Down), Sean Purcell (Galway), Pat Spillane (Kerry); Mikey Sheehy (Kerry), Tommy Langan (Mayo), Kevin Heffernan (Dublin).
Hurling team of the millennium: Tony Reddin (Tipperary); John Doyle (Tipperary), Nick O'Donnell (Wexford), Bobby Rackard (Wexford); Paddy Phelan (Kilkenny), John Keane (Waterford), Brian Whelahan (Offaly); Jack Lynch (Cork), Lory Meagher (Kilkenny); Christy Ring (Cork), Mick Mackey (Limerick), Jim Langton (Kilkenny); Eddie Keher (Kilkenny), Ray Cummins (Cork), Jimmy Doyle (Tipperary).

So who should be the next two players inducted?
No homework for anybody if we can fill the first page of this without anybody nominating a player from their own county.
(Or, in the case of our Northern correspondents, province.)
Good idea, if they promote it properly this could become a very prestigious honour in the years to come. Stick Michael Donellan in there at some stage for the pure brilliance of his skill, very few have come close to him in raw talent in the history of the sport.
Two seems a very small number a year, particularly when there's a massive backlog of obvious HOFers.
maurice fitz has got to be in there (and martin mchugh!)
DJ Carey perhaps.
Paidi o se
John Mullane, Eamon O'Hara
I go with mick o connell and Sean purcell from a football point of view, if you include hurling i put in Christy ring with O`Connell
sorry read that wrong player selected from the millennium are automatically on, i go with Jack O`Shea
and Matt Connor, thats my 2 anyway!!
Declan Browne.
Enda Muldoon. Get outta that one Hardy.
Matt Connor, Peter Canavan, Dermot Earley
Noel Skehan, JBM, Ciaran Carey
One from each province for football:
Padraig Joyce
Maurice Fitzgerald
Matt Connor
Oisin McConville
From recent years
Hurling DJ Carey or Nicky English
Football Maurice Fitzgerald, Peter Canavan or Anthony Tohill

northern with a small n please
Surely the likes of Micko and Sean Boylan would be shoo-ins, assuming such an institution would recognize managers?
Someone mentioned Martin McHugh... first entry from Donegal would have to be McEniff.
Surely the relevant question here is not who should be in it,but who should be left out? Most clubs have a Hall of Fame, with an addition every year, and most of us without thinking could rhyme off at least twenty worthy candidates for this national one.
Hope they approach it tastefully, like the SFA in Scotland, which accepts nominations from everyone and anyone, and admits, after careful consideration,6 new members annually,at a Special Dinner, where each new inductee is presented with a commemorative plaque.

I would have to agree with you.
Padraic Joyce, Peter Canavan.
Gerry McInerney, DJ Carey.
Jacko and Mullins are the blatant ones for me.
Better do them now and return later for the likes of Frank McGuigan, JBM, Canavan, Maurice Fitz, O'Rourke, Matt Connor, Mickey Linden, John O'Leary, John Egan, Paudí, Dermot Early Snr, Padraig Joyce, Moynihan, Ja, Blaney, Corkery, Tony McManus, Anthony Tohill, Dermot McCabe, Dara O'Sé, Eamon O'Hara, Michael Donnellan, Mickey Quinn, Ciaran McManus, Kevin O'Brien, Declan Browne, Mattie Forde and of course a whole host of players from a county the OP prevented me from mentioning. ;D

Padraic Joyce, Peter Canavan.
Gerry McInerney, DJ Carey.
Seanie McMahon, An Clár, the engine of that great Clare team of the 90's.
Francie
Dick Fitzgerald and Eddie Kerr
D.J. and Jacko
There's a lot of catching up to do. The first 10-15 years of the Hall of fame should mainly include players from the first 50 years of the GAA, the players from the 80s 90s and 00s will have to wait.
For Kerry the first 4 should be:
Dick Fitzgerald
Paddy Kennedy
Paddy Bawn Brosnan
Aeroplane O Shea
BTW, Why did Tony McTague and Eamonn Cregan get in as well?
Leinster : Matt Connor, Kevin O' Brien , Brain Mullins , Martin Storey
Munster : Ciaran Carey , Maurice Fitz , Declan Browne , Ger Loughnane.
Ulster : Frank MacGuigan , Brian McEniff , Peter the Great, Big Joe Kernan.
Galway : Padraic Joyce , Joe Cooney.
Sligo : Mickey Kearns , Eamonn O Hara
Leitrim: Packie McGarty , Seamus Quinn (didn't he deck John Maughan or was it his brother Frankie?)
Rossies : The town of Ballaghadreen (for staying loyal and true to its blood under terrible circumstances ;) ) and maybe some token gesture like Tony Mac or Dermott Sr to keep them happy ;D.
Dermot Early
Padraic Joyce
Delighted for Tony McTague, a club man of my own in Ferbane, and someone who coached us as underage players. He was a great player for Offaly's first great team, the All Ireland winners of '71 and '72, and they beat Kerry by 9 points in a replayed final, which is still Kerry's biggest defeat in an All Ireland I think?
Tony had a phrase with us which I use today with my teams. 'Win the ball. The man that has the ball is GOD. He decides what happens next.'

McHugh and McEniff are barred as you broke the rules of the nomination. :D

anti-donegal bias as usual.
Mick Higgins should have been it from the start so should added now to rectify
Ciaran McManus, Ciaran Mcdonald - Mullane and Tony Browne for Hurling
On what basis would Ciaran McManus or Ciaran McDonald be candidates for this?

Sorry , should they have 10 All Ireland Medals? They lead thier County for many years, excellent players.
Anyways why ae you asking me. somebody mentioned Kevin O Brien from Wicklow, why didn't you highlight that?
Cos I only read the last post and commented on it...
Good idea to read the whole thread then...
Why, is it full of other pearls of wisdom like yours?
Well read the first page of the thread. Declan Browne is mentioned, would that not give you an idea, that you don't have to name players from Dublin, Kerry , Tyrone. But you didn't bother reading so that was your problem.
I am blissfully unaware of any such problem. Would McDonald & McManus make their respective provincial halls of fame were there one? Would they make their county HOF?

Who know's its all about opinion ain't it.
Obviously they would make their County hall of fame, there is no such provincial one.
I imagine a Hall of Fame should be for the cream of the crop. Not just lads who happened to be very good players for their county. In that case we would need a jumbo hanger sized hall of fame to fit everyone in.

What players in your wide eyed opinion should be there, I could name Canavan,Cooper, Joyce, but that is easy.
McManus is worth a mention, wouldn't make the team in my opinion ahead of bigger names
