Hogan Stand:

QuoteFeile future under threat
27 February 2013

The future of the renowned Feile competitions is under threat because some clubs are too competitive.

GAA officials have raised concerns on the matter as Feile heads into its 42nd year as they feel that the competition has lost its ethos.

Feile is a competition at under-14 level that covers hurling, football, camogie and girls' football and it has become an important part of the GAA's culture.

At a recent Central Council meeting plans were discussed to remove the competitive element from Feile and also to ensure that clubs of every level get a chance to participate, rather than just the best teams in respective counties.

Reports of teams staying in hotels and warm weather training in an attempt to win the national Feile competition have lead to the current discussions.

I nearly choked when I saw the "too competitive" part. Kids around the age of 12 and over love competition. Nothing wrong with it IMHO.  There's a place for competitive games and there's a place for non-competitive games.

And what's wrong with teams staying in hotels? Would you prefer them to camp in tents in a field?

Has this story appeared anywhere else other than here? http://www.hoganstand.com/Waterford/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=186574

Don't know what they are basing this on. There are no quotes in this story, no byline for anyone to have to take responsibility for it, and only the vaguest hint of where it may have emanated from. 'A recent Central Council' meeting. I would not be taking anything from hoganstand.com seriously unless I saw it backed up somewhere else and names attributed to it. That story from the Examiner about Ballymun taking their Under 14s away is from nearly 2 years ago and there doesn't appear to be any connection to the Hoganstand's 'story'.

Move along, nothing to see here...

Well lads, is anyone applying for a Canadian visa in the new year? They're for two years this time which is handy. I'm just getting my police check sorted now so I can apply as soon as they open in January, but I haven't yet decided to go through USIT or go it alone.
If anyone on here has been through the process before could offer any recommendations that would be great. If it only cost an extra 200 quid or so to avail of Usit's services I'd pay it for the peace of mind, but I don't like the sound of this http://www.politics.ie/forum/current-affairs/97856-why-usit-charging-so-much-canadian-work-visas-2.html

Tara - Terribly: 'Those boys are tara through other'. It can also strangely be used to describe dislike for something: 'That bacon's not tara '

I never understood this.
That's tara = That's terrible.
That's not tara = That's terrible.

It's a wee bit more subtle than that.

That's not tara = That's not very good
Therefore 'tara' means very good and terrible.

WTF?

Sure are you not a gaeilgeoir? If you get your head around the verb 'caith' having seven different meanings, that should be easy

The tricolour isn't flown after dark, so it's not there for the night time games. Strange one

Could do with a bit of advice here. As yous know tax returns for the year April 2010 - 31st March 2011 are due on Tuesday. During that tax year I spent a right bit of it registered as self employed, but I wasn't always working. I signed off the self employment register and became full time with a company at some point in that year, think it was towards the end. Anyway, I was thinking I am surely due to fill in a tax return for whatever period I was self employed, but HMRC haven't sent me any letters asking me to do a tax return. The previous year they did. Should I just leave it and take the chance, or should I ring them up and explain the situation? That might only create bother for myself though? I don't think I even earned enough during my period of self employment in that tax year to owe them anything anyway. And how can I log on and file a return if i no longer have any username/password etc?

To be blunt Massey your dates make no sense.
(1) Tax Returns for YE 5 April 2011 are due on Tuesday (actually Thursday as HMRC are on strike on Tuesday)
(2) If you were self-employed during that year than you do have a Self Assessment tax return to complete, whether or not you were sent one or not
(3) However there will be no late penalty as you have not been issued with one
(4) There is no such thing as a self employment register - you notify HMRC on your final SA return that you are no longer self-employed. I know you may have phoned them to say the same but if you admitted to them that you were self-employed at any point during that tax year an SA should have been issued.
(5) The line at the end about owing them anything - could well be true but if you were employed during that year your Personal Allowance will have been swallowed up in the employment and all profits from self-employment will probably be taxable & Class 4 NIC due. If there was a loss on Self Employment then this can be set-off against your Employment Income and a potential tax repayment could arise.

Either way, a phone call to them on Monday morning would do no harm.

how do my dates not make sense? Last year when I had to file a return I just got a fella I know who works in accounting to file a blank return. But to do that I had to logon to the website etc. I haven't the details to do that any more. Is that correct about the strike meaning I have til Thursday to get it sorted? I think I could get into the office in Belfast on Wednesday afternoon.
You sure there's definitely no such thing as a self employed register? I definitely had to go online and register as self employed.

General discussion / Re: Lake Garda

Not Garda but I was at a wedding in Lake Iseo, the smallest of the four lakes, in September and it was pretty amazing. Scenery is something special, and it was very relaxing. Quite expensive area though and very little English spoken, but I imagine Garda would be a bit more touristy so English might not a problem there. We flew into Bergamo which was handy enough as the other posters said - it's the right side of Milan for the lake district and straight onto the motorway.
Beer is lovely there but very expensive and not that popular - nobody could pour a pint!
Verona isn't far away on the train and a day trip to Venice is no problem either.
Would seriously recommend the whole area and I'd hope to go back myself

Not a movie but I was an extra in that show Seacht - it's like an Irish lanaguage version of Hollyoaks if you haven't heard of it. Got no pay other than a few sandwiches. Pretty boring stuff, had to do over a dozen takes for one scene pretending to chat to two strangers. I got fed up and went home after that.

I can't get Broadband in any shape or form, had a BT technician out at the weekend who says we live too far from an exchange. Is there any way around this? I wasn't speaking to the man myself, so didn't get to ask him

Does the online checkers say you can get broadband - I had a hassle with BT for a long time - An engineer came out and said we were too far from exchange - however our neighbour 100m up the road was able to get broadband - so I rang again - took the day off - seems second time we got an engineer who was willing to check a bit more - he went up the road was getting a speed of 2Mbs - but was dropping to 0 at our house.  I then asked him could it be a problem with the line/box coming from Pole to house as this would have been the same one as when house was built 20+ years ago.  He went up checked it/worked at it for 3/4 hours and replaced wires etc and it works fine now - 1.5Mbs or so - no Infinity yet but hopefully they will work on it.  Ziggy did you keep contacting asking about when it would be in greencastle - god if you can get it up there bound to be able get it anywhere  ;D

One online checker said I can get 1MB, but none in reality. Our house would be up over 20 years so that could be an option worth investigating. Cheers. I think there's a right few ones round our area, how many people do you reckon I would need to get signing up before North West Electronics would install a receiver?
