What is the rationale for this? Do we really need another stadium costing millions? And if so, why in dublin?

Would have thought that if the GAA were going to build a new stadium then Mullingar or Athlone would be ideal.

Exactly. Liam O'Neill seems to suggest you can't be dragging people (Dublin supporters presumably) to provincial locations, so if they're not going to fill Croke Park, then we'll have to build a smaller sized stadium in Dublin to cater for those games.

He says the Leinster Council won't fix the games for outside Croke Park, but surely that's because they expect to receive additional revenue from the bigger crowds that Croke Park can take (although in early rounds, it's often more than 50% empty).
Following that logic, why would they play the games in a smaller stadium in Dublin, when there are equal sized stadia in the likes of Portlaoise and Tullamore that are already build and at last partly paid for!?

You have Portlaoise, Tullamore and Nowlan Park with good capacity already. Pairc Tailteann and Newbridge need development and have a substantial local market that would use an enhanced stadium with more covered stands etc. Any stadium in Dublin is only of interest if it is a replacement for Parnell Park or replicating it on the other side of town, not as a Leinster venue.
If at first you don't succeed, then goto Plan B

If they're going to split Dublin into 4 Counties won't they need more Stadia(ums?) in Dublin? :)
Seriously though they need to upgrade the Green grassy slopes by the Boyne and Newbridge first.

Obvious.

They need to save Croker for any of the following:

* the Dubs win
* Garth Brooks
* the Dubs draw
* One Direction
* Army v Navy
* U2
* The Script
* teaching the Queen hurling

So they need the other stadium for the other teams.

But why Dublin?

a) Our hub and spoke transport network means everywhere is well connected to Dublin, in theory.
b) No more whinging about being brought to Limerick (or wherever) and being told to get on with it.

I think Liam O'Neil said it could be in any of the bordering counties either. Naas would be the optimum spot for a Leinster specific stadium IMO.

  • 20 mins from the M50
  • motorway from Laois, Carlow & Kilkenny
  • Wexford would have motorway from Carlow
  • Biffos motorway from Laois
  • Westmeath & Longford motorway to Kilcock and then nip across
  • Eastmeath & Louth motorway to the M50

There should be a 50k venue in every province with all provincial championship matches played there. Make it like Thurles/Clones on match day and let the county grounds be used for league games. Madness pumping money into another 40k venue in Munster that'll only be full the odd year. Have 5 dedicated championship stadiums with Hawkeye in each and level the playing field.

You'd need to turn the clock back to about 1970 and start again to get that sensible suggestion up and running.
Then again who in Connacht would want to be playing all their games in Prenty Park?
