Well if they aren't training and there are no matches, why would players be asking Eamonn McEneanys permission to go play soccer? It's the closed season, do what you like! That said, the old "lads will go off playing soccer" argument is getting a bit tiresome. At all levels of the game.

He's talking shi*e about inter-county players - if most managers had their way they'd still be training 3/4 nights a week during Nov/Dec - especially those managers getting paid by the training session.

WRT Juveniles - it's a huge problem in Dublin - two codes to cater for in the fixture calender - one football game called off and you dont have a game for three weeks.

There are 25% less kids playing GAA in Dublin now than there were in 2000 (Source - Coiste Na Nog review report 2007)
25% i very very very seriously doubt that , every club i know its juveniles sections are over full

It's 100% true. Head along to the next CCC1 or CCC2 meeting in Parnell park and you'll hear it yourself from the clubs. There are a few clubs - Ballyboden SE, Cuala, Crokes, Vinnies, Na Fianna etc who have tons of Juvenile mentors and who can handle the no's - it's all well and good having 200 kids up at a nursery on a saturday morning, but at present 90% of those kids are gone by U11. There has one if not more teams pull out of groups/divisions b/w U8-12 this year - U12 Div 4 has two teams left in it out of six. About 30% of matches arent played because one of the teams can't field 11 players..

I think he's dead right.

It was different five years ago, when players weren't being looked after, now they have access to gym membership, get the best of gear, get good mileage rates, have top class hot food after training, stay in the best hotels, most get very good team holidays with a few grand spending money - if 'elite athletes' still don't want to represent their county, the counties should find the players that do.

Inter county football is merely the window dressing of the GAA.

Wicklow have been thrown out, very unfair on the clubs involved  >:(

They were already given one postponement. It's only right that the competition goes on without them.

They should have factored in extra time for last Sundays game.

I'm a Dublin county board officer and I know how many figures annually he was looking for.

Ah come on, your not.  ;)

Unfortunatly, I am.

I'm not gonna field any complaints about fixtures or anything else though!

Stephenite that's politically correct bullshit and you know it. Do you honestly think he put up all those years of high mileage because "he loves driving"?  Incidentally I have no major issue with him being re-imbursed for his time (within reason) but less of this nonsense about how "he gave his life to the GAA" etc..

Where did I mention anything about him giving his life to the GAA, stop putting words in my mouth that I had no intention of saying,

You have no idea what Micko received over the years, neither do I.

I'm a Dublin county board officer and I know how many figures annually he was looking for.

He has a keen sense of what he's worth annually.

Doherty didn't catch a ball in the qtr final until Muldoon kneed Whelan in the back, with Whelan barely able to walk and unable to train  for the next ten days.

jesus christ, where do they get them. i know we all have our share of muppets but they dubs can fairly dig them up....

Will you decrypt the gibberish you posted, for me?

QuoteWhelan is a better midfielder than Cavanagh. Cavanagh is a better wing forward than Whelan.

Cavanagh is a far better footballer than Whelan!!

That's probably correct, but as Jinkxy said, Whelan is a better midfielder.

I'm surprised that Cavanagh seems to be a unanimous choice at midfield without a mention of Ciarán Whelan – despite the fact that Whelan has come out on top on most of the occasions that they came up against each other.

I hate to say I told you so lads .....  ;D

See my post above from July on the topic of "best XV in the country"

Because the all star selection committee (michael lyster etc) are the leading experts on the game...

there's a very strong argument for cluxton's inclusion, but beyond that none of the other three should have been close.

on whelan, fergal doherty was the best midfielder in the country this year, followed by o'se.

Doherty didn't catch a ball in the qtr final until Muldoon kneed Whelan in the back, with Whelan barely able to walk and unable to train  for the next ten days.

The dogs on the street knew the team early Friday morning. The bookies are also told as soon as the team is picked and they suspend taking bets.

Terrible news, another young man taken too early, would I be right in saying he's the first of that Dublin team from the 70's and 80's to pass on.

I'm pretty sure that's right - can't think of anyone else passing..

..watching the Under 21 Final i see once again "The Dubs" the self proclaimed best fans in the world are on song.  The Hill is rocking.....and that "special atmosphere" that "The Dubs" bring to Croke Park is filling the air.

** To the Dublin fans who were at the match, you are the genuine article, you are proper fans and fair play to you all.  Pity about the scoreline so far.

Can you cite a link where a Dublin poster has claimed that Dublin have the best fans in the world, and also post the link where it was decided that this poster would speak for all Dublin fans.

The Hill was closed.

The ticketing was a joke - people were queing for up to an hour only to be told there were no more tickets. Then there was a huge rush around to the Hogan when a rumour started that tickets were available there

"Best fans in the world??" Sure they filled Croker when they played Tyrone in the league but only 700 or so traveled to see them play Cork away in the next match. If they are the best fans in the world, how come they are always late for matches in Croker.

Not true. There were a few thousand Dublin fans in Pairc Ui Rinn - there were more Dublin fans than Cork fans (as always)
