From the Brisbane Times:

Two Irish tourists are dead after a car-load of backpackers slammed into a truck in a sickening head-on crash in the state's north yesterday.

Police said five people were on board the stationwagon when it collided with the truck on the Bruce Highway at Cardwell, about 30 kilometres north of Ingham, just after 4pm.

The two men, both aged 25, died at the scene, while two others were airlifted to Townsville Hospital. A third person was transported by road ambulance to Ingham Hospital.

It is believed the truck driver, a 23 year-old man from Atherton, escaped injury.

Police said investigators may need to use DNA samples to formally identify the two dead tourists, who were believed to be on a backpacking holiday from Ireland.

Detectives are attempting to contact the men's relatives overseas while officers from the Forensic Crash Unit try to piece together the cause of the incident.

Terrible tragedy, RIP.

General discussion / Drink with Painkillers
April 11, 2008, 04:13:39 PM
Does anyone know the truth about taking alcohol whist on painkillers? I have heard that it makes you drunk twice as quick, although i think that may be a little excessive.

Im for Liverpool for the weekend, and am currently on painkillers after spraining my ankle last nite, I dont wanna go teetotal all weekend, but i dont wanna be legless either. Is it safe to take a few casual pints, or should i leave the painkilers behind?

£1,000 expenses a week for MLAs

Northern Ireland's MLAs are claiming nearly £1,000 on average each week in expenses, BBC News can reveal.
Expenses claimed since 8 May now total almost £2m, working out at £928 each week (or £132.60 each day) per member.

Five MLAs have claimed over £28,000, including the DUP's Ian Paisley Jnr and independent Dr Kieran Deeny.

Gerry Adams and Gerry Kelly's expenses have increased dramatically, with the Sinn Fein pair claiming almost £35,000 between them since the end of June.

When BBC News revealed the first set of expenses from the new Stormont administration in July, Mr Adams had claimed just £881.15 and Mr Kelly £4,155. Their expenses now total £17,612 and £22,343 respectively.

Overtaken

SDLP Foyle MLA Mary Bradley had been Stormont's biggest expenses recipient, but has since been overtaken by Upper Bann DUP MLA Stephen Moutray.

Mr Moutray has claimed £33,522 since 8 May compared to Mrs Bradley's £32,053.

The MLA claiming the third biggest expenses is the UUP's George Savage (£31,060), also an Upper Bann representative.

Mr Savage is followed by Ian Paisley Jnr (£29,800) and Dr Deeny (£28,185)

Among the lowest expenses recipients are DUP West Tyrone MLA Allan Bresland (£2,185) and Sinn Fein's Caral Ni Chuilin (£4,420) and Caitriona Ruane (£4,399).

A spokesman for the Assembly said the figures may "include some claims for expenses incurred between 1 April 2007 and 7 May 2007 but paid after restoration".

General discussion / Celtic in for Fanni
June 24, 2007, 06:57:30 PM
From BBC website:

Celtic linked with defender Fanni

Fanni wants a move away from Nice
Rod Fanni's agent claims Nice are prepared to sell the French defender, with Celtic among the clubs interested.
The 25-year-old would prefer to join a club involved in Champions League, which puts Celtic in a strong position.

Fanni's agent Dominique Six told the News of the World: "We have had interest in Rod from Monaco, Celtic, Genoa and St Etienne.

"Celtic have looked at him many times. He knows about that and would have no problems about going to Celtic."

Fanni began his career with hometown club Martigues before playing for Lens and Chateauroux then joining Nice in 2005.

"I got calls a few times last season from the Nice sporting director, Roger Ricort, saying that Celtic had been at a Nice match to see Rod play," added Six.

"It is a very big club that is always competing at the top level in Europe.

"I was the agent when Momo Sylla joined Celtic, so I know it is a good club to deal with.

"I understand why there is interest in Rod. It's expected he will be in the French national team in the coming season.

"It is certain he will leave Nice this summer. I met the club president, Maurice Cohen, on Friday and we agreed this.

"The only thing that will have to be decided is the price, since Rod is under contract until 2010."

Monaco have already had a bid of £2m rejected for the player, according to reports.

McQueen to make film on Bobby Sands

Turner Prize-winning artist Steve McQueen has confirmed his first feature film - about Irish Republican Army (IRA) hunger striker Bobby Sands.

Hunger focuses on the last six weeks in the life of Sands, leader of the 1981 IRA hunger strike at the Maze prison.

Filming begins in Northern Ireland in September.
McQueen, the film`s director and co-writer, is best known for a 1999 Turner Prize-winning video inspired by Buster Keaton.

The video artist said the story had modern relevance.

He said: "Hunger will be a film with international contemporary resonance. The body as site of political warfare is becoming a more familiar phenomenon.

"It is the final act of desperation, your own body is your last resource for protest. One uses what one has, rightly or wrongly.

"What I want to convey is something you can`t find in books or archive, the ordinariness and extraordinariness of life in this prison. Yet also the film is an abstraction in a certain way, a meditation on what it is like to die for a cause."

The film is being co-financed by Channel 4 for broadcast on TV next year, while worldwide sales rights are being sold in Cannes.

Jan Younghusband, Channel 4 Commissioning Editor for Arts, said: "Channel 4 regularly commissions new work from artists for the screen, galleries, public spaces and theatre.

"Steve McQueen is an exceptional artist and filmmaker whose work in galleries has transformed our experience of the visual arts.

"I am delighted to commission his first feature film which revisits, through the unique perspective of an artist, this crucial moment in Anglo-Irish history."
