From the Brisbane Times:
Two Irish tourists are dead after a car-load of backpackers slammed into a truck in a sickening head-on crash in the state's north yesterday.
Police said five people were on board the stationwagon when it collided with the truck on the Bruce Highway at Cardwell, about 30 kilometres north of Ingham, just after 4pm.
The two men, both aged 25, died at the scene, while two others were airlifted to Townsville Hospital. A third person was transported by road ambulance to Ingham Hospital.
It is believed the truck driver, a 23 year-old man from Atherton, escaped injury.
Police said investigators may need to use DNA samples to formally identify the two dead tourists, who were believed to be on a backpacking holiday from Ireland.
Detectives are attempting to contact the men's relatives overseas while officers from the Forensic Crash Unit try to piece together the cause of the incident.
Terrible tragedy, RIP.
