GAA Discussion / Re: Armagh v Galway AIQF
June 28, 2022, 12:53:17 AM
What a game of football.  An absolute rollercoaster of emotions for both sets of fans.  Jesus, Armagh brought some crowd and they had CP quaking when RON kicked a monster free to bring it to ET.  We finally showed a bit of balls in a big game in CP, it's been a long time coming.  If that doesn't stir something in that group of lads, nothing will. I lived that game through my young lad.  He went through every emotion a 13 year old can.  I don't think he watched any of the penalties live! 😂.
Some of the less heralded players pulled Galway through yesterday. Delighted for the likes of Tierney,  Finnerty, Glynn but McDaid was just sublime, what a display, just refused to be beaten.  Dare I say it was Ja esque!!
All the other stuff has been well covered to death, it in no way should detract from what was, by a distance, the game of the year todate.
Make no mistake but the Armagh crowd made that occasion yesterday.  The colour and noise was brilliant to see.  Like ourselves and after a long wait, they have a young team they can be proud of and one they can row in behind over the next few years - football needs a few new teams to come to the fore.
Roll on the semi final, Gaillimh Abu!

Thoroughly deserved win for Mayo.  Solid enough game plan and execute it very well.  It's been a disappointing  campaign to date for our lads.

Shocking Galway "performance".  Out fought and out thought through-out the game.  Got increasingly aimless the more the game wore on.  Cant see either of those teams troubling Limerick and possibly 1 or 2 others.

The worry is that it was a game that ended in a similar manner to Monaghan relegation playoff last year, it was on the verge of another collapse in a match that had effectively already been won.
Galway will still have to improve in a good number of facets or they will left in the same position as 2017, watching Roscommon take over Pearse Stadium in a Connacht Final. To be fair to Gleeson (and all Galway keepers) I don't think he's being put in best position to succeed with respect to kick outs as it is, but Flaherty has (or at least he had at U20 level) better tools for that vital aspect of the game. System still needs to be put in place for them and hopefully this can be improved.
Missed a few last Sunday but even with plenty of room to improve Galway's shot conversion rate has already increased from last year, if they continue to keep a shot conversion rate around 70% for the rest of the year that shouldn't be the main reason for any losses moving forward at least.

One thing that must be said in credit to the players and management, once promotion was assured after the Derry game, that match against Mayo was really all that mattered, they had to find some way to get a winning result, whatever that took in terms of setup and approach to the game, they have delivered on that ultimately and at least given themselves some chance now to have a reasonable summer.
Just in case any Rossies think I'm running their final win down because Galway weren't bothered or something - absolutely not the case. Galway went out to try and win the League final on the day, they came up short against a good Rossie team, it's just that in the overall scheme no one in Galway would care about having won the Div 2 league final if Mayo beat Galway out the gate last Sunday and a Div 2 title wouldn't have saved Joyce in that scenario.
It all comes back to our lack of a kick out strategy in these situations.  We had no go to planned move over the final 10 mins of the game to guarantee us possession, get up the field and put the game well beyond Mayo's reach - it was nearly there anyway.  Mayo set a few traps (think John Daly turnover) and we fell hook, line and sinker for them.  This continues to be the main concern for most Galway supporters right now and MUST be addressed.  There was a lot of other stuff that we did really well last Sun and as you say, kudos to the players and management team for that.

Great to get the win but by God did we make hard work of it late on.  Root cause as usual was our kickouts with us only retaining 63% of our own ball (Mayo were 83%!!!) and it will be our Waterloo eventually.  We were definitely more solid defensively but a lot of that was helped by Mayo's very lateral play outside our 45 - they just couldn't get any runners to break Galway's formation which was somewhat surprising.  Conroy, Comer, Kelly, Molloy & Walsh (clearly not fully fit) put in a serious shift.  On we go with much to work on for sure but this was a small step in the right direction.

As is the norm these days, neither side likely to start as currently named.  Will be travelling more in hope than expectation.  Mayo are operating at a much higher level than Galway and much of the stuff we were getting away with during the league will be easily exposed by any solid Div 1 team.  A win would be a welcome surprise but that's  the height of my expectation unfortunately.

Awful performance in Tuam.  So many issues that are not being addressed or improved namely kick-outs, transition from defence to attack, midfield, support runners for the man in possession etc.  We are so much less than the sum of our parts right now.  Need to win one of our final 2 games to go back to Div 1 which we just might manage although it's hard to have much confidence that we will beat either Ros or Derry away, that for sure.  One thing that is sure is that we will get pummelled by Mayo in Castlebar next month, miles off that level based on our league games to date.
It's important to get back to Division One, mental to have 10 points on the board not be assured but it's the mini league with Rossies and Derry that will decide the two to go up. Would be disaster to not make it up, have a feeling it will come down to a winner take all game against Roscommon.
I'd be worried about the Mayo game but I think the issues you outlined there are not things that can be completely fixed in 6 weeks, I would have expected to see improvements in the matches against what is, outside of Rossies and Derry, a really, really poor crop of Division Two teams this year, but haven't really. There's patches in games where it looks OK but not at a consistent enough level, it's not like it's been a different selection of players every week either. Certain areas such as FB line and midfield plenty of questions still. Tackling technique is good one minute and awful the next, conceding way too many goals.
Get a win in one of the next two matches and actually show up against Mayo then the performances to date won't matter but it's been much the same team in every match and it doesn't look like one that will get near the top teams in championship.
Comer fully fit and scoring is big plus and Sean Kelly would make any team in the country, if Shane Walsh is on form then there's 3 lads that take serious minding, up to other players like Finnerty and McDaid that are around the panel a while now need to step up into bigger roles or we'll go nowhere in the summer. Pity Cooke isn't available, could really do with him as an option out around the middle. Might seem strange to have so many Galway supporters unhappy after 5 wins from 5 but for anyone who has been at the matches, they can see what's coming down the tracks, the standard in Division Two is so far off Division One it's hard to believe and Cork who are an absolute mess of an outfit stuck 2-17 past Galway.
Mayo are going into April with zero respect for and zero fear of Galway, at the end of the day there's no valid argument to be made saying it should be otherwise either.
Couldn't disagree with any of that AFA.  Of all our many deficiencies, it's the total lack of a transition game plan from defence to attack that frustrates me the most.  I see no support runners off the shoulder, many times there is 80 yards space between defence and attack with almost zero out ball options.  It was so noticeable in the Offaly game last week and again today we had lads turned over time and again as they had no support close by when the ball eventually did get forward, especially in the last quarter.  We obviously have a few talented forwards but we are just not putting them in a position to execute often enough.  It won't improve dramatically in 6 or so weeks as you say but good God it needs to improve from where it is right now.

Would have thought that more of the NUIG lads would get a break than just Culhane, Flaherty has Fitzgibbon final tomorrow.
No offence to Offaly but if Galway can't win that match at home venue without the Kellys and Tierney I'd suggest we are at nothing, might be more changes before throw in perhaps.
I'd be surprised and disappointed if there aren't changes to that starting team by 2pm tomorrow.  There should be enough quality in the overall squad to manage a home win vs Offaly based on their most recent performances.

Really impressive display from Armagh, could only admire their style of play and seem to have plenty of lads that are well fit to kick scores.  It bodes well for the coming season.
The Dubs have obviously regressed and are back in the pack for sure.  Another few results like that and Dessie will start to feel the heat.

Absolutely ridiculous situation in this game not to have basic medical assistance available, so much for player welfare. Serious questions for the Sigerson organisers.
That was a complete and utter shambles!  Not even a stretcher available to remove him from the pitch FFS!!

NUIG really stepped it up in the second half with the introduction of a number of very influential subs, especially Sean Kelly.  He scored a great goal in what has been a very good week for him personally with him being appointed the Galway captain for the coming year.

Well done to Mayo, showed tremendous character to win that after the 1st half performance.  Horan has had some dubious days on the line in CP but credit to him today, he made a few big calls there today and mostly all for the better.

Well done to Sligo, thoroughly deserved win, keep her lit for another few weeks!
