Title: Laois Football Divisional Competition 2019/2020

This will be a big help to our new managerial team to see what talent is out there..

Thought they were going to come up with "identifiable" team names.
North, South, West and East didn't exactly tax the minds much!
I hope lads buy into it. The West team last year kinda fell asunder as it went on and struggled for lads. It may help our new manager a bit but I'm not sure it's the silver bullet.

Did we actually find any extra players from it last year as i cant remember any new names playing this year that was not already in the squad or the u-20 squad.

Marty Scully, Paddy O'Sullivan, think there's a few more.

Scully was surely called up on the basis of his displays for his club last year (which were brilliant) not in the divisional league. Same with Adam Campion.

also you have 5 or 6 lads over each team from different clubs and they all fighting to get their own players on the field even though deep down they know they not good enough for county standard. on the other hand it did raise a few pound for charity so it cant be put down to much but for spotting talent i don't think its the way to go. look at the progress of the senior hurlers this year and there was no divisional tournament ran!!!

There's 8 Senior Hurling Clubs in Laois. Anyone putting their hand up elsewhere is easily spotted. You're talking through your hoop.

They did. The clubs refused and acted with all sorts of fuckology. We need the clubs to realise they're at f**k all on their own and start coming together, like Borris Kilcotton did, like Rathdowney Errill did, etc etc.

They wont. So we have this. Give it a chance, its harming no one.

Am I right in saying the Map in picture on laois today is wrong. Is it Laois today's map or county boards???.. Spink doesnt border any of the clubs in South region I reckon. I wonder is it a mistake  or done on purpose to cover up Spink farce.

Dunno who made the map but youre correct, st Josephs has a large catchment, stretches down to the Swan which is between Crettyard and Spink.

No Attride or Done in Divisional teams . Otherwise as expected . Thought Gary Walsh would have gave it another go this year but perhaps he's off travelling again .

Some strange names in there tbh. Obviously some selectors pushing lads from their own club. Maybe no harm to see these lads. Could be a hidden gem out there somewhere.

Portarlington 5 ?

Courtwood & Josephs 8 & 9

No doubt there is a few decent players from both St Josephs and Courtwood but this makes it farcical.  That they out number Port by this percentage.

Id imagine a lot of players turned down the offer. Surely port would have had more than 5? They had 5 on the panel last year. Also i dont see the point in retired county players playing this competition.  And no u20's will be able to play cos the u20 club championship is on this weekend, not an ideal fixture.

I think port actually have 6 named but havent sent in any under 20s yet and sean byrne is recovering from injury, some clubs are sending in lads who cant make there own senior team which us ridiculous

7 Courtwood not 8. Port haven't made their under 20s available either which might explain some of it. Also Portlaoise should have been with that North team so without them it weakens them a lot. Thought Hatch Finlay might have been named. Rory Bracken too.

Agree. This divisional set up not worth it. U-20 running also and you have 3 clubs in leinster. Where is the point or what is a player going to prove here that he has not already in the championship. Some of the players on the list would not make a junior team let alone a county team and it is the number of mentors which is another joke pushing their own players

Gary Comerford from stradbally is a very stylish footballer.  If he committs to the GAA next year it will be a big boost to stradbally .

Niall Corbet from Clonaslee was excellent. Some free taker and offers something from general play as well.

Darragh Connolly deserves a chance, as does Jason Moore who's extremely fast.

Brian Daly looked very good. Also liked Martin Doyle and O'Halloran as full backs and wing back Connelly of Ballyfin.

Disappointing to see the South failed to field a legitimate team and having to rely on selectors . Laois needs everyone that is capable and interested involved.  It seldom happens.

Disappointing from the organisers of the South team that they couldn't organise other players from that region to come in and field a legitimate team . You'd have to question why the South failed so miserably compared to the others, The West being the prime example which really seemed to be well organised.

Well I'm sure they rang players but a lack of interest there,, looking at the squads John has tried and tested a lot of them and most he thought weren't up to it so it will be interesting to see if quirks can get something else out of them

quirk will get nothing out of that divisional set up, any one that has impressed in it also impressed with their club in the championship and again i have to question the taught behind it after a long season and with leinster and u 20 running.

Exactly . Looking back at the tournament now I'd be very worried about the lack of interest shown by some lads towards it , the best example being the south . What has Quirke gained from these last few weeks do you think ?

Possibly needs a revamp. Two semi finals, a final and 3rd/4th place play off might mean dead rubbers being avoided.
It's a competition with potential but needs buy in from all clubs not just some. Running it without under 20 players is also something that should be considered. There was a case this weekend of a lad playing colleges Friday, divisional Saturday and under 20 Sunday. Burn out in October🤔

Maybe divisional teams should be incorporated into the senior championship with senior teams dropping to ten or twelve and any team below senior being allowed to have their players play with senior divisional teams while still being allowed to play with their clubs. Might encourage lads to commit to divisional teams

Bearing in mind he won't have seen any of these lads play, I'd say he found the whole thing informative. In all likelihood, it's going to be a tough year for us, and Quirke will need to explore all options to try and unearth new talent. They mightn't exist, but he needs to see and know that for himself. Lads here need to get down off their high horse.
