What's a Boxing Day?

Probably a reference to this lad's knowledge of the North Kerry Championship.  Always played in late Nov/Dec with the final usually around Christmas.  Often held on St. Stephen's Day, the final often descended into almost tribal warfare similar to the faction fighting common in North Kerry in times gone well past.

On one of  the rare occasions of a clean(ish) game in Listowel, it was overheard in John B. Keane's pub that a customer "Went to a boxing match and football broke out".

I have no other reference for a boxing day....

What's a Boxing Day?

Boxing Day got its name when Queen Victoria was on the throne in the 1800s and has nothing to do with the sport of boxing. The name comes from a time when the rich used to box up gifts to give to the poor...The servants would also go home on Boxing Day to give Christmas boxes to their families.

Paddys day should be renamed Boxing Day or maybe puking day. St Stephen's day should be called Fat, bloated day.

Getting back on topic,  the club finals should be finished in the calendar year.  Free up Jan/Feb for 3rd level.
