Really good thread lads! What we wouldn't do for a few of the quality defenders mentioned above to still be playing now.  Anyway, it got me thinking (not sure if its been done before), what would be the (for what ever reason), an unlucky/under used Mayo 15 of all time (positions not that important) and why?  My age only permits  me to go back so far in time so i'll need some help. Feel free to say if posters think if players were not up to scratch.

1. Ivan Heffernan Ballina/ Barry Heffernan Crossmolina
2. Gary ruane
3. Brian Heffernan4. Ray Connelly
5. Peter Butler
6.
7. Pat McAndrew
8. Kevin Staunton
9. 1 of the two lads that won an all ireland for louth! Ginger
10.
11. Padraig Brogan
12. Mcd (Should still be playing in my opinion)
13. Kevin O Neill
14. Loftus lad from burishoole
15. Billie Fitzpatrick

Brian Heffernan would have been a straight sawp for Flanagan who got injured straight away in the 97 AI final, instead whole team was re shuffled, hence Brian Heffernan could be classed as a player that was under used.Case to be made for Ginger and McAndrew from Cross too.

For me id like to see Martin Connolly in charge.  As i see it he would have an advantage in that he would see a lot of players in the variuos schools games involving teams from Mayo. That surely would be an advantage as trial matches might not always produce the best players.
I also think its no coinsidence that colleges football is strong in Mayo, at a time where the county set up has improved.  Galway won more than their fair share when St. Mary's, the bish, st pats, and jarlaths ruled supreme in the schools game in the provence.
I would also suggest that there be a member of the backround team from north, south and east to go to the club games to keep the pressure on the chosen panel, and spot new players, something Ray tried to do i tkink.

The Bish? When did they rule Connacht Colleges Gaa?

Ya sure they are a soccer school......

I stand Corrected lads... Yer dead right about em... soccer/rugby are their games.

Should be a good game in Sligo, being from Ballina and in college in Sligo, the banter is going to be good that week.  Let no Mayo poster on here say its going to be a walk in the park, because its not gona be one.........  Give Sligo due respect....... and then beat them off the park. The time for talk in Mayo is over....... Time to put up or shut up! Up Mayo!!

::), a bit of a contradiction there mayo4eva,Is there anyway the mods could put a cap on the amount of mayo members, theres too many of yee. Its not a fair fight on here. Stephenite can you do something?
I mean to say, we cant have any of the rubbish talk like we've had in the past, sure look at the lack of respect we showed meath this year..... according to some people around ballina, we were in last years semi before the meath match.....
If its any good to ya my mums from Sligo :D :D

I think it may have been another "lost" Knockmore man that was top scorer in the county championship in '96 - Padraig Brogan.

Maybe i'm biased as a knockmore man myself but today, i would still expect howley/Kilcoyne to choose a serious club game over a poxy intercounty league game any day of the week....i presume it's the same for all clubs?

Terrble shame that O'Neill was never utilised by Maughan, things could have been very different indeed......In a team that had the best midfield and backs at the time but poor enough in the forwards, it was criminal to leave a quality player like O'Neill off......

Only saw Padraig Brogan play live once, not to sure of the year, think it was in 96 in a county semi in ballina vs Crossmolina was it 8/9 points he scored that day??  (could be wrong about year), defo another fine player that never reached full potential at county level.  Agree completly with the notion that players should have serious club games ahead of challenge/national league, looking back it was shocking that kon had to go to the press about it. Id say it was sweet revenge on sunday........

Apparently he wasn't needed in 1996. >:(

Would be interested to know more about this, were there behind the scenes factors involved or what was the story? Was only a wee lad back then.
Also looking forward to the future, what do people think needs to be done so to try and minimise the chances of this happening again, and are there any players who currently seem to be heading down the same road in yer opinions?

Dont know if this belongs to the club thread......... Just wonderin what all the Mayo posters think about this: Could it be, that the biggest c**k up in Mayo football of recent times was not using the obvious talents of Kevin O Neill to greater affect for the county team? Sorry if this has appeared b4!! Im only new round here!!

Right I cant take this much longer, im fed up of this sort of crap (whether its a wind up or not, its not F**kin on). My Case .... Let me say firstly that im a coach of 3 ladies teams at our club and an ex county manager of ladies teams. Some facts for all the people who be-little the ladies game:

1. Females do not have the same muscular mass/fibers as men, therefore cannot pyhsically run as quick, hit harder etc

2. In general, Lads on county panels get travel expenses etc.... The Ladies dont. Managers of county teams get travel etc, ladies coaches/managers dont.....

3. Ladies county teams do the same drills as the lads, (see point 1), diets, extra fitness work etc Serious counties train 3/4 times a week.

To all those people who reckon ladies shouldnt be playing etc....... go and say that to all the u6/8/10 players who play every sat, sunday at our clubs. While yer at it tell the childs parents to bring their daughters home as they shouldnt be playing football.

Tell the players of the 6 finalists in the all ireland finals last sunday that they are not worthy to wear their county colours whilst representing their counties in croke park on final day.

The only thing that i will agree with other posters is that the standard of goalkeepers is terrible, this will take time to get right.  Finally to those people who dont support our games at all levels and abilities .... F**k off back to watching the premiership.

Would you take a wee peek in the dressing room door when their getting changed?

Haha...... funny man, very funny.... Ignorance is bliss and all that. Oh and no is the answer to your question.

First ever post on the board,  and what better way to start. ;D Best of luck to the mayo minor team today!

Well, pull up a seat and make yourself at home. ;)
This is indeed a fine way to begin and I'll be wishing Mayo the very same.
For far too many times, I have felt the same way only to wind up gutted but I feel this time will be different. So; may your debut on the board be a happy one.

:( :( Debut on the board didnt quite go to plan afterall!! :( Gutted for the lads esp last years players, its going to take a lot for them to get over this. As much as it kills me to say, Armagh deserved their victory today, when it mattered most in the second half they had the answers.
