I seen something about Dr Crokes getting into the Kerry club championship final - is this the proper SFC?  Surely they couldn't have this played off already.

Kerry play about seven different championships.

Aye, was thinking that this is one of their curtain raisers.

IIRC, the winner of the senior club championship goes through to Munster only if the team that wins the county championship is a divisional side.

That's correct. We need AZOffaly to explain it all again. ;D

That's right, wasn't there a row over Legion getting nominated for the Munster club when Dingle drew the County final with South Kerry.

So what is supposed to happen in the situation that a team wins the club championship and another (non-divisional) wins the county championship?

The county champions get into Munster.

twohands!!!

From my understanding there is the senior club championship, intermediate club championship, junior club championship and novice club championship.
Every club side takes part in this at whatever level they are at.

The county championship is made up of the senior club teams plus the divisional sides.
If you're club isn't a senior club, you can play with your divisional side.

The winners of the county championship go forward to Munster unless they are a divisional side.
If a divisional side wins the county championship, the winner of the club championship goes forward to Munster.
From looking at some of the results/fixtures there have been some relegation play-offs the last few weeks so I assume this is what decides relegation from senior club. I think all losers of first round club championship were playing each other and they keep playing each other until there is only one team left and the winner gets put down to intermediate.

There is also county league which is separate from any club or county championship tie-in. Plus there is divisional championships as well.

Someone once told me the club footballer in Kerry plays 3 times the amount of games as a club footballer in Cork. Not sure if it's still true but would seem likely.

This is the rule:

"In the case of the Senior Football Championship, Kerry shall be represented by the longest standing club in the County Senior Football Championship
with the following exception, where the county shall be represented by the winners of the Kerry Club Championship:
a) Where the County Championship is completed and won by a Divisional/Group Team."

What happened a few years ago was the failure to run off the County Championship before the first Munster game (due to draws and replays).  Dingle had won the club championship and the county championship was down to the final pairing of Killarney Legion and South Kerry.

Per the rule above, Killarney Legion were nominated to represent Kerry in the Munster club championship.  Once all were aware of the rule, published in the annual Eolaire, there were no objections.  The rule has not been challenged since then, so it seems to be acceptable to all.

Here is the Senior Club Championship 2017 details, with 8 teams participating:

Round 1 saw Dr. Crokes beat Austin Stacks, Kenmare beat Kerins O'Rahillys, Killarney Legion beat Dingle in a replay, and Rathmore beat Kilcummin.
Semi-finals:  Dr. Crokes beat Rathmore, Killarney Legion play Kenmare this coming weekend.
Final:  Dr. Crokes v Killarney Legion or Kenmare.

Relegation playoff:  Austin Stacks beat Kerins O'Rahillys, Dingle v Kilcummin upcoming.
Relegation final: Kerins O'Rahillys v Dingle/Kilcummin loser
Loser of Relegation final drops to intermediate for 2018 and will be replaced in Senior Club Championship 2018 by Intermediate winner in 2017.

Interestingly, the team that drops from 16-team Intermediate 2017 to Junior 2018 is the lowest placed of the 8 first round losers in the County League 2017.  The first round losers were two Div 1 teams, three Div 2 teams and three Div 3 teams...so one of the Div 3 teams, Gneeveguilla, St. Michaels/Foilmore or Brosna, will be Junior in 2018.  3 rounds of the County League have been played, so 8 more rounds to preserve their intermediate status.

For the County Championship proper, the nine divisional sides have a playoff game to reduce the number to eight.  The two teams with the worst championship record over the previous five years are in this playoff game on May 6 in Tralee  - Shannon Rangers and St. Brendan's.  The loser will be done for the year with only one game, all other teams get two in the championship proper as there is a backdoor for Round 1 losers.

I like using the previous 5 years results to grade teams
should be done in a lot more counties

The problem with it is the loser cannot improve...I'd tweak it so the loser is exempt from the playoff the following year...leaving two of the worst three in the playoff.  If Shannon Rangers lose again this weekend, it will be two games (both losses) in two years for them and in the playoff again in 2018.

The other change is that a divisional team gets weakened every year (this year Kenmare club are senior while Kenmare District Board will be a lot weaker) while Mid Kerry welcome back the Milltown/Castlemaine contingent.  Laune Rangers were demoted in 2015, so all 6 Mid Kerry clubs are now available to the Mid Kerry teams for the first time in ages...even when they won it all in 2008, Laune Rangers were senior...Mid Kerry actually beat Laune Rangers in the semi final that year.
