Derry final is Glen v Slaughtneil. If Glen win, they'd be defending their McGirr title.

Whoever wins that won't be far away from winning Ulster - Glen have a lot of last year's winning team still underage and Slaughtneil also very strong. Wouldn't think there'll be more than a point or two in it either way.

The Paul McGirr Tournament has a bid weekend ahead.

On Saturday at 2:30, newly crowned Tyrone champions Coalisland tackle Rostrevor.

Then on Sunday at 11:30 the most impressive teams so far wo have been O'Donovan Rossa meet the holders and tournament favourites Glen.  This should be a real humdinger.  By the way last Saturday Aodh Ruadh from Ballyshannon defeated Cavan champions Ramor United

It can be hard to gauge standards in Ulster but Rostrevor have beaten two very good teams in Newry Shamrocks and Carryduff in Down to get this far.

Rostrevor must be good cos those 2 carryduff midfielders were as good as I've seen play at u16 level.

Carryduff led by 8 points after 15 minutes but Rostrevor came back to win the game by 7 in a very good game of football. Rostrevor have great pace in their forward line and are a very impressive minor team.

Any results from todays game?

Extra time from the Rossa - Ballyshannon game. Big match report below.

Paul McGirr Under 16 Football Ulster Championship semi-final
12 November 2011
Aodh Ruadh 4-14
O'Donovan Rossa (Antrim) 4-14
John Hughes reports from Saint Dympna's Park, Dromore

What a game. Classic scores, crazy wides, indefatigable defence, inexcusable errors, nerves, guts, heroes, howlers, resignation, hearts-in-mouths, spills, skills and lots and lots of thrills. Like the GPO, it's the kind of game ten years from now everyone will be telling you they were at.

For the first 45 minutes the lads from the Lagan looked well in control. But when Aodh Ruadh got themselves back into the game in the final quarter the momentum swung from side to side right up to the final whistle in extra time. Cruel indeed it would have been for any side to lose.

Both sides showed clear signs of nerves for the best part of the first half. Despite that it was Aodh Ruadh who were first off the mark when David McGurrin pointed after an effort came back off the post. It was the first of a ten point haul for the Abbey Isle man.

While Aodh Ruadh might have notched the first point it was O'Donovan Rossa who were quickest to settle into the game as a group. Chris McComish had already proved dangerous for the Antrim men in earlier rounds and he was in form again in the semi-final slicing over a quick reply to McGurrin's opener within a minute. A couple of minutes later and the useful half forward had lofted over another to double Rossa's advantage.

There was a short lull for treatment to the Lagansiders full back, Richie Gowdy. Unfortunately Gowdy couldn't continue and was replaced by Gerard Walsh.

Rossa were sharper after the lull and signaled their intent when a high ball into the area from Sean Smylie was fisted just wide. The ball went back in a minute later and Gareth George looped a fine shot from right to left over Daniel Kelly to raise the green flag and put the scores to 1-2 to 0-1. Jamie McDonald almost fashioned an instant response as he advanced with malice on the Rossa goals, but his driven shot flashed over the bar. Aodh Ruadh won a free from the kick out. Intelligent play from free-taker David McGurrin saw the ball worked to Paddy Gillespie and he fired over to put two points between the sides.

Nevertheless it was a O'Donovan Rossa who were playing the better, more controlled football at this stage. McComish hoisted over a good point, before Rossa won the kick out and James Connolly rifled over. The Aodh Ruadh kick out malfunctioned critically once more and again Connolly found himself bearing down on goal. He hit a superb shot which described a path between the despairing hand of Kelly and the underside of the crossbar. Rossa were now seven points to the good and full value for it too.

Aodh Ruadh looked shaken and unsure of themselves. James Kelly was let on with a great ball and the goal on, but he shot early and his attempt went over. With five minutes left in the half Rossa raked irrepressibly up the field leaving a trail of flailing Erneside arms behind them. Gareth George was once again the man on the end of the move having found space of the man. He made no mistake, drilling his shot low and hard under the body of the advancing Kelly.

It looked grim for the Ernesiders, but there were a faint green shoots of recovery in the dying moments of the half when David McGurrin fisted over and then Jamie McDonald, struggling with injury at this stage, fired over a difficult point.

Half time score: O'Donovan Rossa 3-4 Aodh Ruadh 0-6

Ballyshannon needed a good start to the second half. It didn't happen. Before the first minute of the half was gone McComish had once again slipped over another lovely left foot point. A minute later James Connolly did brilliant work to turn over a ball himself and then make up 15 metres before slotting his shot over with an economy of fuss. More silky play from Rossa saw Gareth George powering over his first point of the game and putting ten points between the sides. 3-7 to 0-6. Two McGurrin frees on 35 and 36 minutes already had the air of taking the bad look of things. But matters were shortly about to take a dramatic change for the better for the Ernesiders.

An Aodh Ruadh counter attack found a statuesque Jamie McDonald on his own between the 13 metre and 20 metre line. He pivoted, pulled the trigger and his precision shot left Domhnall Moran with no chance and the game back on. Ballyshannon continued to pressurise and on 41 minutes Rossa had to act fast to snuff out a goal chance, but McGurrin salvaged a point.

The Lagansiders were a little rattled with the gap now back down to four points, but once again it was Gareth George who stood up to the mark, firing over a distance free from the ground with polished technique on 42 minutes.

Aodh Ruadh now introduced Conor 'Schillaci' Gilmartin and he, along with earlier sub Niall Harley, was to have a pronounced influence in swinging the game back in the Ernesiders favour.

The next score came with 13 minutes left, a free from McGurrin, but the Falls Road men responded immediately. Deaglan Murphy was a lot quieter than his attacking colleagues in the forward line, but he showed impressive cool to execute his point.

Rossa were unhappy with Conor Gilmartin's size and directness and he drew a penalty with ten minutes to go for a foot block. The offending defender was substitute Gerard Walsh who was already on a yellow card. He got his marching orders and the closing stages were tantilisingly poised. McGurrin stepped up for the penalty, but his shot came back off the left post and there were no Aodh Ruadh men alive to the rebound, allowing Rossa to clear their lines. McGurrin made some amends three minutes later when he hit another free.

With six minutes left Jamie McDonald delivered another moment of audacious genius. Collecting the ball out on the right he held his nerve to work a shooting opportunity and hit a searing shot past Moran to put a single point between the sides and send the Aodh Ruadh support into delirium.

With three minutes left Conor Gilmartin again found himself with a shooting chance. The point might have been the option to take, but Gilmartin saw a chance to finish the game and backed himself. Unfortunately his shot fizzed just wide.

As time ebbed away James Connolly and David McGurrin exchanged points. Connolly's effort a particularly classy long range effort.

Rossa struggled after going that man down and it was Aodh Ruadh who were applying the preponderance of the pressure in the closing stages. It was appropriate that David McGurrin got the closing point of normal time. Aodh Ruadh won a free well out from the Rossa posts. McGurrin displayed his intelligence and accuity to hit a short free, develop a clear shooting opportunity and execute a calm, clinical finish to level the game.

Full time score: O'Donovan Rossa 3-10 Aodh Ruadh 2-13

The momentum seemed to be with Ballyshannon for extra time, and that looked confirmed when a David McGurrin shot from distance just sneaked over the bar. However the pendulum swung back to the Belfast lads in no uncertain terms when Eamonn McGrath was harshly adjudged to have foot blocked in the area. Gareth George smashed home a magnificent penalty despite the best efforts of Daniel Kelly.

Padraig McGreevy was quiet for much of the game for Rossa, but he was to have a big say in extra time. He blazed over a good goal chance with three minutes of the half left, before George hit another beauty of a point to give the blue and gold a four point cushion and seemingly set fair for the final.

Up stepped Pauric Patton. In the dying seconds of the half he won possession near the half way line. Even at that early stage he seemed to have just one thing on his mind. His blistering pace left his marker flailing after him and as he romped forward the Rossa defence seemed to open up for him. A more mentally fragile player might have looked for an option, but Patton was a man on a mission and he crashed an unstoppable shot past Domhnall Moran for what was score of the game in every sense. Aodh Ruadh were a point down at half time in extra time. The game was most definitely still on.

O'Donovan Rossa had enjoyed a lot of green flag success from balls dropped into the danger area. Two minutes into the second half of extra time Ballyshannon finally got the chance to try a similar approach. A shot was put out for a 45. The place ball was floated speculatively in and Johnny Gethins, who had a quiet game by his high standards, was clinical in dispatching the opportunity. It was a two point game going down the stretch.

The closing stages were a toe-to-toe heavyweight contest. Five minutes into the half the Aodh Ruadh defence once again opened up for McGreevy, but once more his shot flew over, rather than under the bar. With three minutes left and Rossa desperately trying to find the leveler it fell, inevitably, to Gareth George. He hit a majestic pressure point to tie the scores at 4-14 apiece.

The final few moments were nerve jangling for both sides, but when Eugene McConnell blew the long whistle there can't have been too many in Dromore who doubted it was the fairest result, a fact vindicated by the sustained standing ovation both sets of fans gave the exhausted players afterwards.

It was a game strewn with exquisite skill and some fearful errors. It was also a game where a number players who will doubtless be featuring for their counties in years to come stood up and weren't found wanting.

For O'Donovan Rossa Gareth George was phenomenal, two goals and three points were only part of the story as he tortured the Aodh Ruadh defence for long periods of the game. Beside him James Connolly was just as lethal in the full forward line. Chris McComish was another great finisher and a very natural footballer with it. The Rossa midfield of Sean Smylie and Callum McVeigh were an excellent pairing and gave the Belfast side a great platform to build on.

For Aodh Ruadh David McGurrin's ten point haul is hard to look past. He might have missed a penalty, but he was central to driving on the Ballyshannon challenge, rousing the Ernesiders after every point and playing with an unquenchable passion and conviction. Jamie McDonald played through the pain barrier and in that context his two goal, two point haul is an even more impressive achievement. Eamonn McGrath staunched the flow of goals when moved to full back at second half and his authority played a huge part in restoring Aodh Ruadh's confidence. Ryan Patton seemed to flourish more at half forward. Matthew Maguire had a fine stint in the corner, and substitutes Niall Harley and Conor Gilmartin both made hugely positive contributions on introduction.

But it would be impossible to ignore the contribution of Pauric Patton. Just when it was most needed his reading of the game helped Aodh Ruadh get traction. With his footballing brain, assured hands, frightening pace and laser-guided passing he was an invaluable asset. Apart from that the sight of him ripping down the wing on his way to goal spreading panic in his wake is a vision that will live long in the memory.

A phenomenal game of football played largely in good spirit between two accomplished set of footballers. The next installment promises to be every bit as thrilling.

Rossa Reach Paul McGirr final
21 November 2011

Rossa (Antrim) 1.11 - 0.7
Aodh Ruadh (Donegal)

On a great winter afternoon for football Rossa overcame Aodh Ruadh of Donegal to reach the final of the Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Football Championship. After last weeks' epic draw Rossa made no mistake this time. Rossa played some of their best football in the tournament in the first 23 minutes as they hit Aodh Ruadh for nine unanswered points. The back six were water tight and with Connolly and George causing all sorts of problems up front Rossa had a determined look about them this week. Aodh Ruadh did get two points before the break to leave the half time score 0.9 to 0.2 in Rossa's favour.

Aodh Ruadh came out in the second half with all guns blazing and quickly tagged on a few points and should have scored a goal only to see the shot rebound off the post and then for Moran in the Rossa nets make a great save from the rebound. This seemed to inspire Rossa who then went down field and with some great passing responded with points of their own from Murphy and Boyle. Rossa then had 3 great goal chances however they only managed to convert one from the boot of George who then straight afterwards converted a great 45 which spilt the posts in two. Aodh Ruadh now looked a beaten team and when Donnelly and Connolly added further points for Rossa the game was over as a contest and Rossa eventually ran out comfortable winners by seven.

Rossa owe this victory to their back six who all worked very hard and everyone of them had great games and at no stage did they give the Aodh Ruadh forwards the opportunity to get any easy scores.

Rossa have now played four games in this tournament and lets hope they can give themselves one last push for the final and bring the trophy back to Antrim for the first time.

The final is this Sunday 27th November at 2pm in Dromore against Rostrevor.

O'Donovan Rossa
Domhnall Moran; Stephen Gaskin Padraig Mcgreevy Stephen Gaskin; Niall Devlin, Gerard Walsh, Nathan Early, Aidan Orchin; Callum McVeigh, Sean Smylie; James Connolly (0.4), Chris McComish, Chris Boyle (0.1), Sean Pat Donnelly (0.3), Gareth George (1.2), Deaglan Murphy (0-1).
Substitutes: Sean Emmet Shannon for Deaglan Murphy

Good to see another antrim team win an underage football title. That's two in 2 years now - not so long ago it was good to even be competitive so hopefully will benefit the county longer term.

Hi Fuzzman, the Paul McGirr Tournament was won in 2012 by St. Enda's, Belfast.  The tournament now has the backing of the Ulster Council and has gained official status which is great for the profile of the tournament.  I will be posting regularly about upcoming fixtures, results match reports etc...   The launch and draw will be made in early / mid October with the competition starting shortly after.  It is now possible to play floodlit evening games with the wonderful new pitch that Dromore have opened, so we are looking forward to a great tournament this year.

Who are the contenders in each county this year?

I see Creggan and O'Donovan Rossa are in the Antrim U16 final, who would be the favourites to come out of this, Rossa have been at the Paul McGirr tournament a few times in recent years.

I know Fermanagh is at the semi final stage and the Derry final is between a fancied Dungiven side and Kilrea, anyone know how Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan are going or who has won in these counties?

Not an upset at all. Derrygonnelly were the favourites.
Had beaten Enniskillen twice in the league and I think have not been beaten all year.

Great turn out for the Paul McGirr launch in Garvaghy tonight, all the teams already through were in attendance and Oisin McConville gave a great speech on his experiences of the tournament last year and how much winning the tournament last year had meant to the Crossmaglen club, all in attendance were given an insight into the wonderful work being done in Zambia by the Spirit of Paul McGirr Trust.

The draw threw up some interesting derbies:

Preliminary Round:  Crosserlough (Cavan) v Derrygonnelly (Fermanagh)
Quarter Finals:       Burren (Down) v Clann Eireann (Armagh)
Dungiven (Derry) v Monaghan Harps / Truagh (Monaghan)
                            Tyrone Champs v Donegal Champs
St. Brigids (Antrim) v Preliminary Round Winners

The Crosserlough v Derrygonnelly will kick the tournament off next Saturday in Gardrum Park, Dromore

With St. Michaels defeating favourites St. Eunan's in the Donegal final we now have 8 of the 9 participants for this years tournament with the winners of the Tyrone final between Errigal Ciaran and Carrickmore this weekend completing the jigsaw.

The tournament kicks off this Saturday with a Double Bill.  First up is the preliminary round tie between Cavan champions Crosserlough and Fermanagh champions Derrygonnelly Harps at 2:30 in Gardrum Park Dromore, this will be followed at 4:30 with what appears to be the tie of the round between Burren and Clann Eireann.  More details later in the week, but a great day ahead this Saturday to start everything off.

Burren 2-10 Clann Eireann 1-12

This Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions tournament quarter final was billed as tie of the round and played before a large crowd both teams did not disappoint as a rip roaring affair ended with a narrow one point victory for the Down champions Burren.  It was a tremendous display by both sides, played in great spirit and there were some great individual performances, none more so than man of the match Liam Kerr from Burren who contributed five wonderful points from play from midfield.   Burren got off to a great start in the game and were three points up following scores from Declan Murdock from a free, Ronan Fegan and Ciaran McAdam.  Clann Eireanns scorer in chief Conor McConville got his sides first scores with two frees, one of which he had won himself.  Murdock converted another free after a powerful run from raiding wing back Darragh Murdock was unceremoniously ended by the Clann Eireann defence.  The Armagh men were now starting to take a grip in the possession stakes with the robust Barry McCambridge foraging tremendously hard in the middle of the field.  Ruairi McConville opened his account with a fine effort before Conor McConville took centre stage with a pointed free and a goal from a move which he started himself.  A snapshot off the ground from Cormac Coleman put the Lurgan boys four ahead but just before half time the powerful Kerr got his first point of the day finishing after a great run through the centre of the Clann Eireann defence to leave three in it at half time.

The half time lead though was short lived as a fired up Burren team came out all guns blazing and full forward Murdock found the back of the Clann Eireann net, setting the scene for a great second half.  Points were exchanged by opposing midfielders Kerr and McCambridge before one of the defining moments of the game came when Burren captain full back Conor Cox came to his teams rescue with a full length diving block denying McCambridge a certain goal. A McConville free put Clann Eireann ahead but this was the last time they were to be in this position as the bustling Kerr levelled and then corner forward Conor McCartan goaled with a neat finish punishing a misplaced kick out much to the delight of the Burren support.  An Aodhan McConville point was cancelled out by a Murdock free before Clann Eireann captain Ryan Owens scored an inspirational point to leave two between the sides.  A fisted effort from Kerr eased Burrens nerves but not for long as Conor O'Carroll now playing in the forward line got in on the scoring act for Clann Eireann.  Burren were coming under immense pressure and Clann Eireann went close several times before once again Kerr took centre stage pointing after a lung bursting ninety yard run.  Two late points from McConville and Owens brought the gap to the minimum to set up a grandstand finish but the Burren defence with 14 men behind the ball held out to become the first team into the semi final draw.

Teams:  Burren - Jack Brady, Shea Fitzpatrick, Conor Cox (capt), Shane O'Hare, Ardan McAvoy, Peter Fegan, Darragh Murdock, Liam Kerr (0-05), Aidan fitzpatrick, Ronan Fegan (0-01), Shea Murdock, Ciaran McAdam (0-01) , Sean O'Connor, Declan Murdock (1-03) & Conor McCartan (1-00)
Subs - Thomas Travers for McAdam, Ryan McAteer for O'Connor

Clann Eireann - Calum Magee, Conan O'Carroll (0-01), Adam O'Connor, Colm Holbrook, Sean McCarthy, Ryan Owens (capt) (0-02), Jack Haddock, Barry McCambridge (0-01), Niall McCarron, Cormac Coleman (0-01), Conor McCarville (1-05), Aoghan McConville (0-01), Ruairi McConville (0-01), Sean Keenan, Conor Turbitt

Crosserlough 5-08 Derrygonnelly 1-04

A ruthless display in front of goal in the early part of this game seen impressive Cavan champions Crosserlough defeat Derrygonnelly in this Paul McGirr Ulster Club Champions Tournament preliminary round game on Saturday afternoon in Gardrum Park, Dromore.  Any pre-match nerves the Cavan boys had were soon banished as they got off to a perfect start with 1-01 in the first five minutes from full forward Darren Galligan, the goal coming after a tremendous catch and run from the dangerous Conor Lee who was proving very influential in the early stages before having to retire with a hamstring injury.  After a Steven Smith pointed free from a narrow angle, both corner forwards Steven Harten and Caoilean Galligan found the Derrygonnelly net, again benefitting from great work from Lee.  A rattled Derrygonnelly side finally starting to find their form and three points from Calum Jones and Shane McGullion (2) gave them a glimmer of hope, however this was short lived as wing forward Shane McVeety punished a poor kick out with Crosserlough's fourth goal. Darren Galligan then lofted over a fine effort from the right wing just before half time to leave the Cavan boys in a commanding position.

Much to their credit Derrygonnelly showed great fighting spirit in the second half, with their captain Connor Cameron putting in a commanding performance at full back repelling numerous Crosserlough attacks.  Three further points from Galligan and Smith (2 frees) were followed by a scrambled goal from  midfielder Tomas Keaney after the Derrygonnelly defence failed to deal with an incoming '45.  However the loss of corner forward Caoileann Galligan to a double yellow signalled a period of Derrygonnelly dominance and but for sterling work in defence from man of the match Patrick O'Reilly the final scoreline would have been much closer.   Derrygonnelly susbtitute Ciaran McGovern gave them a much deserved goal following a fine length of the field move and Nathan Jones added another point, but they were unable to make any further inroads as another pointed free from Smith completed the scoring.  Although pleased with his teams first outing in the Paul McGirr tournament Crosserlough manager Tom Boylan was well aware that tougher tasks lie ahead 'We are delighted to get our first win under our belt, the boys started very well and the early goals gave them confidence to push on but the loss of Connor Lee was a major blow and we hope that Connor will be able to recover in time for our quarter final.  Our second half performance was somewhat disappointing but the defence held out well, however St. Brigids in the next round will prove a much sterner test and we have a lot to work on before then'.  Crosserlough will play newly crowned Antrim champions St. Brigids in the last quarter final which will take place on Sunday 9th November.

Teams:  Crosserlough - Anthony Smith, Gavin Brady, Patrick O'Reilly, Conor Boyd, Brogan Kotze, Connor Reihill (capt), Jamie Smith, Owen Smith, Tomas Keaney (1-00), Shane McVeety (1-00), Steven Smith (0-04), Connor Lee, Steven Harten (1-00), Darren Galligan (1-04) & Caoileann Galligan (1-00)
Subs - James Smith for Lee, Michael Smith for McVeety, Edward Deveroux Gilsennon for Kotze & Brandon Doylan for Harten

Derrygonnelly - Osisn Smyth, Adrian Maguire, Connor Cameron (Capt), Stephen Leonard, Connor Maguire, James McGrail, Aaron McGlone, Odhran McBrien, Shane McGullion (0-02), Aidan McKenna, Nathan Jones (0-01), Gavin McGovern, Rian McGovern, Colm Jones (0-01) & Jason McGlone
Subs - Debhon McGovern for  A McGlone, Ciaran McGovern (1-00) for R McGovern, Leigh Green for J McGlone

This Saturday at 6:00 Dungiven St. Canice's and Monaghan Harps battle it out to become the second team into the semi finals of the 2014 Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament.  Dungiven are marked by many as tournament favourites given their unbelievable form in Derry this season, winning both the league and championship double and indeed their  comprehensive  win in the Derry final over Kilrea by a 17 point was their lowest winning margin throughout the Derry championship. Featuring several members of the St. Pats Maghera Macrory Cup panel, they are a formidable side with physical presence but also a prolific forward line who averaged over 34 points per game in the Derry Championship.

However, they will be coming up against a Monaghan Harps team who have had a great season in Monaghan culminating in their 2 point victory over Truagh in the championship final replay.  According to team manager Michael O'Donoghue the Harps have had a great season so far and don't intend it to end this Saturday "Monaghan Harps U16's are delighted to be taking part in this years Paul Mc Girr Memorial Tournament. This year has seen our 16's complete the double, winning both the  League and Championship titles. It had been 10 years since our U16's last achieved this double and 7 years since we won the Championship. This year has been a great achievement for this young squad of players with thirteen of this panel who also won an U14 double last season still eligible to play U16 Football next season. The lads are looking forward to competing against the best there is in Ulster and are grateful for this opportunity being given to them. We would like to thank Dromore GFC for this invitation and wish them every success with this wonderful tournament both this year and in many years to come".  Backboned in defence by Cathal Power and Jamie Shields, and with midfield partnership of Jack Deery and Remy McKenna providing a strong platform, they will be looking to the accurate Shane McMahon, Dillon Duffy and Nathan O'Donoghue to get the scores needed to progress.  An enthralling game is in store with a battle of contrasting styles and although Dungiven may be tipped as slight favourites, they will have their hands full in dealing with the Monaghan threat.  The game takes place in Gardrum Park Dromore and all proceeds go the 'The Spirit of Paul McGirr Trust' to aid their wonderful work for those in poverty in Lusaka, Zambia.

Triple Treat in Dromore

This coming weekend the Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club champions tournament offers a bonanza of football with three great games in store.  First up at 1:00 on Saturday is the clash of the two most recently crowned champions, Carrickmore of Tyrone and St. Michaels of Donegal.  Both teams will be making their first ever appearances in the tournament and it promises to be a tightly contested game.  Carrickmore who last weekend completed an historic league and championship double will be entering the tournament in a confident mood and will be looking for big performances from James McGurk in defence, the powerful running Conor 'Shorty' Loughran in midfield and the prolific Ciaran Daly and Paddy McElduff in attack.  According to manager Ciaran McAleer, Carrickmore are looking forward to the challenge "Having recently completed the Under 16 Championship and League double for the first time in the clubs history, it is a great honour for Carrickmore GFC to represent Tyrone in this year's Paul McGirr tournament. This has now become a highly prestigious competition and our players are really looking forward to playing and testing themselves against the best U16 teams in Ulster. As management we see taking part as an experience that will help develop our players as they progress through the ranks of underage football to senior level".  The St. Michaels team were somewhat of a surprise package in Donegal this season and performed brilliantly to defeat a highly fancied St. Eunan's team in the Donegal final.  Team captain Jamie Hunter in full back has been a rock all season, with Colin McFadden providing a physical presence in midfield and Odhran McFadden leading the attack with aplomb they will certainly not be underestimated.  St. Michales's youth secretary Ann Marie Kelly states how they intend to make the best of their opportunity in Ulster "It's been a great achievement for these boys to win a county championship. We are a rural club with small numbers but all the boys put in a big effort this year and it shows.  They intend to enjoy this Ulster series and are full of confidence after their county final performance. This team has shown great potential since under 10's and it is fabulous to see them fulfil that potential.

The second game at 3:00 on Saturday is the first of this years semi final's and what a game this promises to be when the impressive Burren take on tournament favourites Dungiven who completely demolished the Monaghan Harps challenge last weekend.  If they are to progress to the final, Burren will hoping  star midfielder Liam Kerr can re-produce his quarter final heroics but team captain Conor Cox and his defensive team colleagues will have to be at their utmost best to stem a Dungiven attack that has blitzed all before them this season.  Shea Murdock is the ideal playmaker at for Burren at centre half forward and in full forward Declan Murdock, who amassed 1-03 in their quarter final victory over Clann Eireann, they have a player well capable of racking up an impressive tally if not tightly marked.  However this Dungiven team, rated by many neutral observers as one of the best underage teams ever to come out of Derry, will be a huge step up for Burren and will provide the stiffest test they have ever had to face.  Dungiven's Conor Kelly was in imperious form in their quarter final win but they have an attack where scores come from all angles and a midfield partnership with strength and mobility that would trouble many senior teams.  While Burren are expected to have their moments of domination, it is hard to see them stopping Paul Mulrone's charges in a game that is sure to be a spectacle for the large crowd anticipated.

Then on Sunday at 3:00 Antrim champions St. Brigids will be making their tournament debut against preliminary round winners Crosserlough of Cavan.  Crosserlough were impressive in their victory over Derrygonnelly and have some talented footballers throughout their team.  Full back Patrick O'Reilly is certainly a name to look out for in the future and was outstanding in their preliminary round win.  Owen Smith and Tomas Keaney are a hardworking midfield partnership and will be hoping to provide the ammunition to a forward line who certainly have an eye for goal.  Crosserlough will be hoping wing forward Connor Lee can recover from hamstring trouble as he is a key man in attack for them, but there is no doubt that in St. Brigids they face an opponent that will provide a much stiffer opposition than they previously faced.  Jack Dowling who is part of the St. Brigids management team reports that although it is uncharted waters for them, it is a challenge they are very much looking forward to "we are very proud to be representing Antrim in the years Paul McGirr tournament, this is the first St. Brigids team to ever win the Antrim U16 title and we are delighted to be taking part in this prestigious tournament.  We are extremely proud of this bunch of players and their success bodes well for the future of the club.  Having watch Crosserlough comprehensively defeat Derrygonnelly we are under no illusions that this will be a great challenge for the boys but we are confident that they can step up and meet this challenge head on".  With three great games in store it will be an eventful weekend in Gardrum Park, one that many neutrals will be anticipating and looking forward to.

Must be a fairly high standard competition this year. Not too many expecting Dungiven to get beaten today.

Second game today was as good a game as you would wish to see, 15 against 15, no sweepers, positive football, some wonderful scores, some brilliant saves, I think Burren were deserving winners but it was a wonderful advert for underage football.  Another big one tomorow at 3:00 with Crosserlough taking on Antrim champions St. Brigids with the winner taking on St. Michaels of Donegal who defeated Carrickmore today.

St. Michaels 0-13 v Carrickmore 0-07

A triumphant St. Michaels of Dunfanaghy progressed to the semi-final of the Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament when a dominant second half performance seen them overcome the challenge of a leg weary Carrickmore who were playing for the sixth week in a row.  Things looked good for the Tyrone men in the first half with James McGurk dominant at the back and Conor Loughran looking dangerous in midfield but they were unable to sustain their performance as St. Michaels and man of the match Ciaran McGinley in particularly took a grip on proceedings.  Two superb long range scores from Loughran and a Ciaran Daly free following a foul on Loughran put Carrickmore three ahead early on and but for some wayward passing and shooting they would have been much further ahead.    It took St. Michaels twenty minutes to record their first score which was a left footed point from full forward Odhran McFadden, the first of six scores from him.  Two points from McGinley, one from the outside of the boot and one from Daly left Carrickmore 0-4 to 0-3 ahead at half time.

But this was as good as it got for them as St Michaels emerged for the second half in much more determined mood and immediately stamped their authority on proceedings with two McFadden frees and one from play from Shane Lagan.   Carrickmore levelled matters with another Daly score and one from Ciaran Cuddy before six unanswered points from St. Michaels ended the game as a contest, two from McGinley, three from McFadden and one from raiding wing back Ruairi Friel. Cuddy finally recorded a Carrickmore reply but Lee McColgan ended the game in style with a brilliant effort from fifty yards as St. Michaels became the first Donegal side in a number of years to reach the semi-final.

St. Michaels:  Dean Mc Colgan, Aidan Mc Fadden, Jamie Hunter (Capt), Tony Toye, Hugh O'Donnell,Caolan Toye, Ruairi Friel (0-1), Ciaran McGinley (0-4 2f), Colin Mc Fadden, Charles Roarty, Shane Langan (0-1), Eoghan Kelly, Lee Mc Colgan (0-1), Odhran McFadden (0-6 4f), Liam Kelly

Carrickmore:  Enda Hughes, Aidan McCallan, Lochrann O'Donnell, Pauric Mullan, Jude Glackin, James McGurk, Oran McKee, Dearcan O'Donnell, Conor Loughran (0-2), Dara Casey, Ciaran Daly (Capt) (0-3 1f), Tiernan Murray, Paddy McElduff, Jarlath Kerr, Ciaran Cuddy (0-2)
Subs:  Conor Kelly for McCallan, Cormac Munroe for Casey

Burren 2-13 v Dungiven 3-07
A large crowd in Gardrum Park in Dromore on Saturday were treated to one of the best underage games of football witnessed in the province in many years as Burren upset the odds to defeat a highly rated and previously unbeaten Dungiven side to become the first team to reach this years Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament final.  It was a victory they thoroughly deserved with a superb display of skill and determination seeing them over the line in a tense finale and they will enter the final as strong favourites having emerged from what seemingly was the strongest side of the draw.  From the early stages of the game it was clear that Burren were not going to be in awe of their opponents as their defence brilliantly marshalled by man of the match and team captain Conor Cox smothered their opponents, Liam Kerr in midfield continuously penetrating the Dungiven rearguard with defence splitting runs and full forward Declan Murdock displaying unerring accuracy in a game where he finished with an eight point tally to his name.  Early scores from Murdock, Kerr and one in reply from Dungiven wing back Pauric McNicholl were an sign of the quality of the fare that was to be in store for the large attendance.  Dungiven keeper Patrick Murphy displayed tremendous bravery to pull off a great save to deny Thomas Travers but unfortunately he suffered a bad concussion and had to be replaced by Niall McNicholl.  Four points in a row from Murdock, Kerr and wing forward Ronan Fegan gave Burren a five point lead and this really shook the pre-game favourites into action with their management springing the talented Fergal Higgins from the bench, but even Higgins was struggling to make an impression against the masterful Cox.  Two points from Conor Kelly and midfielder Seamus Higgins reduced the deficit before Conor McCartan got the first of his two goals fot Burren with a tidy finish to the bottom corner.  As the action really began to heat up, the intensity of the game was upped another notch as Kelly added two more to his tally and Murdock got one in reply for Burren.  Just before half time the pendulum swung in the Derry boys favour when Conor McCartney hit the back of the net, fisting home a quickly taken 13 metre free and then immediately on the resumption it was McCartney again with his second goal, getting a flick to a long ball to put Dungiven into the lead for the first time, when Richard Mullan added a point it really looked like Dungiven were going to take control.
Sub keeper McNicholl pulled off a great point blank save to deny substitute Sean O'Connoer a goal with his first touch but Burren for whom Thomas Travers was winning a mountain of possession rattled off 1-06 without response to put themselves into a commanding lead, three from Murdock and McCartan with his second goal much to the delight of the large Burren contingent.  However, Dungiven were never going to give up without a fight and a goal and point from Fergal Higgins cut the lead back to two with time running out.  The eighth point for Murdock provided a bit of security for Burren but as Dungiven went in search of an equalising goal captain Conor Cox was the man on the spot to deny them and secure a memorable victory.  While understandably disappointed with losing out on a final place, Dungiven can console themselves with the fact they were part of a magnificent game of football, Burren meanwhile will be anxiously awaiting their opponents in the 23rd November final.
Burren:  Jack Brady, Shea Fitzpatrick, Conor Cox (Capt), Shane O'Hare, Ardan McAvoy, Peter Fagan, Darragh Murdock, Liam Kerr (0-2), Aidan Fitzpartrick, Ronan Fegan (0-1), Shea Murdock (0-1), Ciaran McAdam, Thomas Travers, Declan Murdock (0-8 5f), Conor McCartan (2-0)
Subs: Sean O'Connor (0-1) for McAdam
Dungiven:  Patrick Murphy, Fergal O'Kane, Niall Smyth, Shane McNicholl, Pauric McNicholl (Capt) (0-1), Odhran McKeever, Sean Quinn, Seamus Higgins (0-1 1f), Mark Cassidy, Conan Feeney, John Mullan, Kevin Quinn, Richard Mullan (0-1), Conor Kelly (0-3 1f), Cormac McCartney (2-0)
Subs:  Niall McNicholl for Murphy (inj), Fergal Higgins (1-1) for S McNicholl, Ronan Mullan for Quinn

St. Brigids 2-11 v Crosserlough 2-9
Antrim champions St. Brigids making their first appearance in the Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament were two point winners in this intriguing quarter final and now progress to face St. Michaels next Saturday in the semi final.  Although perhaps the slightly better team on the day, St. Brigids will have to make improvements defensively if they are to progress further in the tournament as Crosserlough on numerous occasions cut them open only to show a lack of composure in the final third.  The imposing Finnegan twins dominated midfield for St. Brigids providing a constant supply of long direct ball into their talented forward line, where man of the match Peter Webb in particular shone.  Two scores from James Smith and one from Peter Lavery gave St. Brigids an early lead but Crosserlough were on top at this stage and will look back on the numerous easy chances they missed.  Jamie Smith finally got their scoring underway after fifteen minutes but St. Brigids held a 0-4 to 0-3 lead when the first goal of the game arrived, Ethan Carleton converting the rebound after Anthony Smith had saved superbly from Peter Lavery.  Points from Crosserlough's James and Jamie Smith were cancelled out by two from St. Brigids Webb and Smith to leave the half time score 1-06 to 0-05.
Shane McVeety opened the second half scoring for Crosserlough before Webb and Lavery replied.  Then the game turned in the Cavan boys favour when two goals put them into the lead for the first time, one a scrambled effort from James Smith and the other a well finished effort from McVeety.  St. Brigids went back in front with points from James Smith and Webb who's influence was growing in the game tirelessly working across the half forward line winning and intelligently using possession.   Two superb efforts from Darren Galligan put Crosserlough back in front as the game entered the final few minutes.  But cometh the hour, cometh the man with Webb yet again taking centre stage instigating a move which resulted in a penalty which he converted expertly to the bottom right hand corner and immediately after winning and converting a forty yard free.  As Crosserlough sought the goal they needed in injury time an effort from substitute Patrick Lynch went over the bar leaving a relieved St. Brigids through to the semi-final where they will face Donegal champions St. Michaels next Saturday.
St. Brigids:  Ruairi Lynch, Frank McCormick, Paul Stoors, Oran Boyle, Daire McGarvey, Brogan Austin, Gerard Kervick, Joseph Finnegan (capt), Patrick Finnegan, Peter Webb, John Blayney, Phelim Lennon, Peter Lavery, James Smith, Ethan Carleton
Subs: Mattie Loan for Austin
Crosserlough:  Anthony Smith, Gavin Brady, Patrick O'Reilly, Connor Byrd, Brogan Kotze, Connor Reihill (capt), Eddie Devereaux Gilsennan, Owen Smith, Thomas Keaney, Shane McVeety  (1-1 1f), Stephen Smith (0-1), James Smith (1-1), Jamie Smith (0-2), Darren Galligan (0-2), Sean Briody (0-1)
Subs: Connor Lee for Byrd, Peter Smith for Briody, Patrick Lynch (0-1) for Brady

Having won the Grade 2 All Ireland Feile title last year, it looks like Burren will take some stopping next year also.  A very talented well balanced outfit whos defenders are touch tight at all time.  I must say it is really refreshing to see the football that is played in this tournament, generally 6 forwards against 6 defenders with no sweepers employed, teams playing with freedom resulting in open high scoring games.

St Brigids (Antrim) 1-07 v St. Michaels (Donegal) 0-07
Antrim champions St Brigids advanced to the final of the Paul McGirr Tournament on a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-7 at Gardrum Park Dromore on Saturday.  The opening half was dominated by St Brigids who led by 1-5 to 0-2 at the short whistle.  St Michaels had a number of early opportunities to open their scoring but wayward shooting and attempting to score from awkward angles proved fruitless.  St Brigids with man of the match Patrick Finnegan impressive in midfield opened the scoring ten minutes into the game with points from Peter Webb and Joe Finnegan before St Michaels responded with a point from Colin McFaddden.  The crucial score of the game then came from an angled pass come shot across the St Michaels goal which was deflected into his own net by the unfortunate St. Michaels captain Jamie Hunter.  Further pressure from St Brigids led to two more goal opportunities but fantastic saves from Dean McColgan kept the Dunfanaghy boys  in the game.  St Brigids added three more points to their total from the lively Peter Webb, Patrick Finnegan and James Smith.  St Michaels replied with an excellent point just before the half time whistle from midfielder Colin McFadden.  The second half saw a great fight back from St Michaels who gained control of midfield and a point from Ciaran McGinley and two from lively corner forward Liam Kelly reduced the deficit to three points.  Peter Webb and John Blaney took some pressure off the Antrim champions with vital scores but in the final five minutes the St Brigids defence with Paul Storrs and Brogan Austin making timely tackles and interceptions held out to reach the final on Sunday 23rd November where they will face Burren.

2014 Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament Final

This Sunday at 2:00 in Gardrum Park Dromore, Down champions Burren will face Antrim champions St. Brigids in the final of the 2014 Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament.  It will be a game between one of Ulster's oldest and most successful clubs against one of it newest clubs with St. Brigids only having been formed 16 years ago this week.  Burren enter the final having come through what appears to have been the toughest side of the draw which saw them secure narrow victories over Armagh's Clann Eireann and a highly fancied Dungiven side, in both games Burren were put to the pin of their collars but a mixture of tremendous fighting spirit and undoubted talent saw the emerge from each game with their reputations enhanced.  Playing an attractive style of football with an emphasis on attacking play they have been a hugely impressive side and will be entering the final as the bookies favourites.  According to manager Jimmy McAlinden their acheivements to date have not come as a surprise "As Down Champions and having overcome a much fancied Clann Eireann side, we were surprised to be tagged as underdogs going into the Ulster semi-final against Dungiven.  We go into Sundays final, knowing we still have the ability to raise our game further. The team is strong in all areas. We have top-class defenders in Conor Cox and Peter Fegan; more usually on opposing sides, playing Colleges football for the Abbey and St Colman's respectively. At midfield Aidan Fitzpatrick and Liam Kerr have been consistent throughout the tournament. Aidan is strong, reliable and dependable in the centre of the field whereas Liam is unafraid to break forward whenever an opportunity arises. Playmaker Shea Murdock has created many chances for his cousin Declan Murdock who has been lethal in front of goals, well-supported by the emerging Conor McCartan who scored both goals in the semi-final.  With players such as these, we know that we are capable of winning this tournament and just hope that the little bit of luck, on which games can turn, is with us on the day. Sincere thanks to the organisers of the Spirit of Paul McGirr tournament for giving us the opportunity to compete at this level. Thanks also to our many generous sponsors and supporters who we know are here behind us today."

Their opponents St. Brigids however will not be coming into the final without hope and they will be looking to emulate the recent success of Antrim sides in the tournament with O'Donovan Rossa (2011) and St. Endas Glngormley (2012) both having claimed the title in recent years.  Under the tutelage of Greg Finnegan and Jack Dowling, they defeated a physical Crosserlough in the first round and then last week overcame Donegal champions St. Michaels in a very defensive low scoring semi final.  With the physically imposing Finnegan twins Patrick and Joe in midfield they will be expecting to shade the possession stakes in this area and up front they will be looking again for big performances from Peter Webb who has been one of the stars of the tournament so far and John Blayney, who will be donning the No. 11 jersey that his father, Down great Greg Blayney, wore on many occasions.  Their defence who struggled somewhat against Crosserlough conceding 2-09 certainly made great improvements last week against St. Michaels conceding only seven points and they will be hoping for a similar performance this week against a prolific Burren attack.  Their coach Dowling is looking forward to the occasion and the challenge that Burren will present "Our whole club is buzzing about this tournament and it has given a great boost to everyone involved with the club.  It is our first ever Ulster Final.  The club is 16 years old this week and it would be a tremendous way to end the season to win an Ulster title.  Our lads have shown serious maturity in being able to cling on to the lead last Saturday even though they weren't playing anywhere near what they are capable of.  We can't wait for Sunday against a very strong Burren side who are obviously favouites but we'll just see what happens on the day, hopefully the boys can do themselves justice with their performance."

There are some great battles in store, no more so than the midfield area where the Finnegans come up against Fitzpatrick and the excellent Kerr who has notched seven points in the two games to date. The quality of the Paul McGirr tournament this year so far has been first class and no doubt Sundays game will live up to expectations.  The magnificent Cuchaillan trophy will be heading up the M1 motorway on Sunday, but whether it will be in the hands of Burrens Cox or St. Brigids Patrick Finnegan we will have to wait and see.

Good PR there PMG1.

Hope the final turns out to be a good spectacle. Antrim sides have a good record here (winners in 2011 & 2012) but Burren look an exceptional side and will be hard to beat. Great club with great structure and ambition - I met them when they stayed with our club at the feile last year before going on to win it.

A bit of novelty value lies in that St Brigids manager Greg Finnegan is taking his first ever team. Greg was a county full back for a decade and was a playing member of St Pauls at that time along with brother Donagh, Anto Finnegan (no relation) and half a dozen other county players at that time. The guy helping him is Jack Dowling, son of Dermot who played for Armagh and QUB back in the day.

Gregs twin boys are midfield for St Brigids. Patrick got MOTM last week, and Joseph is captain I think and they double up as rugby players for Belfast Inst - with whom they had an important game on the very night before their semi final win against St Michaels!

Should be a good final and hopefully I will make it down.

Cheers BS, no doubt Burren are an exceptional team, very solid all round but Cox at full back and young Kerr in midfield (still underage next year!) are great prospects.  As you say, plenty of good stock in the St. Brigids team with the Finnegans and Greg Blayney junior, they have an intelligent and fast moving forward line but I just worry about their defence's ability to keep the Burren attack quiet.  However, as Walter knows with Glen, never under-estimate Antrim underage teams as they have caused a shock or two over the last few years.

The most impressive thing about the St. Brigids team is their discipline, they really do seem to be a team who carry themselves well and their dignity in victory in both games so far would set an example for a lot of teams.  The 2 Finnegans lads in particular are as fine a 2 lads as you would wish to meet.  Regarding Jack Dowling, I had the pleasure of being coached by his father Dermot in my own Queens days and it is obvious he has passed a few of his traits onto his son.

It promises to be an entertaining final, hope to see you all there, the kettle will be on the boil!

Another unbelievable game of football today folks, Burren emerging 1-09 to 0-10 winners but were made to fight all the way but St. Brigids who were unlucky not to snatach a winning goal from a couple of late chances.  This really was football at its purist, superb scores, great hits and amazing tension right to the final whistle, great crowd too, report to follow.

Burren 1-09 v St. Brigids 0-10

Those from Down and Antrim who made the long journey to Dromore on Sunday afternoon, and the many neutrals present will all feel they witnessed one of the best games of youth football seen in the province in years as Down champions Burren added yet another Ulster title to the impressive array the club has already attained. Burren came into this game as raging hot favourites, however such was the commitment of the city lads that Burren were hanging on by their finger tips at the end as they edged a classic 1-9 to 0-10 in front of a large and appreciative crowd in a resplendent Gardrum Park.

The winners began well opening the scoring in the second minute with a pointed free from Declan Murdock. St Brigids levelled a minute later before Ronan Fegan flicked the ball to the St Brigids net from a Shea Murdock lay off to put Burren three in front.

Burren were enjoying the majority of possession but squandered several chances to move further ahead as St Brigids were forced to work hard defensively. Patrick Finnegan scored his team's second point but scores from Shay and Declan Murdock ensured Burren remained in control on the scoreboard. Referee Mickey Mc Cann allowed the match to flow and the pace remained relentless with great blocks, timely tackles and big hits being put in all over the pitch. The teams swapped further scores in the closing eight minutes of the opening half as the sides reached the break with Burren 1-6 to 0-7 in front.

Most neutrals expected Burren to build on their lead as they were playing with the aid of a slight breeze after the break, however it was St Brigids who began the second half on fire. A brace of points inside the opening two minutes courtesy of Peter Lavery and James Smith signalled the Antrim Champions intent, levelling the match and suddenly it was game on. Burren struggled to cope with St Brigids work rate and intensity as the Malone Road boys fought like demons for every ball. Their midfield pairing of Patrick and Joseph Finnegan drove their team forward at every opportunity, man of the match Phelim Lennon and nippy corner forward Peter Lavery came more and more into the game. A superb long range 50 yard free with the outside of the left boot from Declan Murdock gave Burren the lead again before St Brigids levelled once more with a point from Ethan Carleton midway through the second half.

Burren were forced to dig deep into their reserves and managed to add points from Ronan Fegan and Declan Murdock to put daylight between the sides. However as the game entered the closing minutes it was St Brigids who were on top. They missed several chances of goals while Burren keeper Jack Brady made a match winning save from Joseph Finnegan to deny St Brigids a certain goal late in the game.

Sadly for St Brigids time ran out and with sixty three minutes played the final whistle sounded much to the delight of the delirious Burren support. It was heartbreak for the young Antrim lads but they can take some comfort in knowing that themselves and Burren had just served up a hugely entertaining and memorable game. Captain Conor Cox who made a couple of heroic diving blocks in the dying minutes lifted the wonderful Cuchuaillan trophy and according to Burren manager Jimmy McAlinden it was certainly one that was going to be cherished in the Burren club rooms "During the week we showed the boys the photos on the clubroom walls of all the successful Ulster title winning Burren teams and we had a photo of these boys with a question mark beside them, we asked them if they wanted to join these other teams and they responded in style today. St. Brigids gave us a magnificent battle and were somewhat unlucky in the end but this is a special bunch of players who deserved the plaudits they were getting. I am looking forward to the bus journey home and taking this title back to the Mourne's".

Burren: Jack Brady, Shea Fitzpatrick, Conor Cox (Capt), Shane O'Hare, Ardan McAvoy, Peter Fagan, Darragh Murdock, Liam Kerr (0-1) , Aidan Fitzpatrick (0-1), Ronan Fegan (0-1), Shea Murdock (0-1), Ciaran McAdam, Thomas Travers, Declan Murdock (1-5 3f), Conor McCartan
Subs: Aaron Laverty for Ciaran McAdam

St. Brigids: Ruairi Lynch, Frank McCormick, Paul Stoors, Oran Boyle, Daire McGarvey, Brogan Austin (0-1), Mattie Loan (0-2), Joseph Finnegan (capt), Patrick Finnegan (0-1), Peter Webb (0-1 1f), John Blayney, Phelim Lennon (0-1), Peter Lavery (0-1), James Smith (0-2), Ethan Carleton (0-1)

This year's tournament will be launched on Friday 23rd October in Garvaghy.  Southern Gaels of Cavan, Inniskeen of Monaghan and I believe Bredagh of Down are the qualifiers so far, Tyrone, Donegal and Derry are at semi final stage and fermanagh is at the final stage we believe.  Any other information is most welcome as to who else has qualified.  It is hoped first game will be played in the last week of October

I wouldn't be too surprised if Clann Eireann were to win it or get to the final, they're a good side and a have had a right few playing minor this year too but i suppose they're all good or they wouldn't be in the competition...

I know and poor southern gaels get the representatives of the second most populous county in Ireland.

The Paul McGirr U16 Club Champions Tournament kicks off in style this weekend with the preliminary round derby fixture between Fermanagh champions Enniskillen Gaels and newly crowned Tyrone champions Dromore who defeated Loughmacrory last weekend after a replay.  It was Dromore's first title at this level since 1998 and the win has provided them with a chance to represent their club and county at Ulster level for the first time on their home pitch.  It will be a massive occasion for the host club and according to joint manager Joe Rafferty it is an occasion which they are certainly looking forward to "Having had a huge involvement in the tournament myself over the last few years and having watched it grow into what is probably the premier youth football tournament in the country it has always been a dream to watch my own club taking part.  It will be a memorable occasion not only for the team but for the entire club and parish and I have no doubt there will be a huge Dromore support there to cheer the boys on.  While traditionally Tyrone teams have not done well in the competition we certainly hope to give it a good shot this year, while we have struggled with serious injuries to key players thoughout the season all came good for us in the end and our performance against Loughmacrory in the championship final replay last Saturday will certainly give the boys a huge boost coming into this game.  We have a strong spine with Ruairi Teague, Mark McGread and Caolan Slevin at the back and a good midfield partnership in Cahir Goodwin and Nathan McCarron.  Caolan McCarron,  Oran Sludden and John MacRory  have been the scorers in chief but the return of Odhran Rafferty after long term injury has proven to be a big boost in the last few weeks.  However, we are under no illusions as to the task ahead of us in Ulster and the way in which Enniskillen demolished Ederney in the county final a few weeks ago shows the enormity of the task ahead of us.  It will be a proud day for the club and hopefully the Dromore boys can give the local fans something to cheer about".  Rafferty and his fellow management team of Niall McNulty, Brian McCarron and Conor O'Hara will be hoping to kick on from last weekend's Tyrone final win and secure a quarter final berth.

Enniskillen cruised to a 52 point win in the Fermanagh final and this is certainly one of the strongest underage team to emerge from the Erne county in recent years.  Managed by Niall Jones, James Reihill and Raymond Curran the Gaels game plan revolves a lot around the towering midfield duo of captain Eoin Beacom and hard working Patrick Cassidy , Gavin Greene is an attacking half back of note and the forward line features the promising John Reihill, Ronan Beattie and Conor Love who top scored in their county final.  This local derby promises to be a tight affair and one that is very hard to call, the game throws in at 2:30 in Gardrum Park this Saturday and all proceeds from the gate go the The Spirit Of Paul McGirr Trust.

Dromore 1-14 Enniskillen Gaels 2-07

Dromore and Enniskillen got the Paul Mc Girr tournament up and running on Saturday afternoon in front of a large and appreciative crowd at Gardrum Park. Played in splendid conditions the teams served up an exciting game that swung one way and then the other before the Tyrone champions eventually sealed the win 1-14 to 2-7.  Playing with the aid of a strong breeze Enniskillen opened the scoring on two minutes with a free from Ronan Beattie but Dromore began to dominate the midfield exchanges and with Cahir Goodwin and Mark Mc Grade in outstanding form they were soon 0-4 to 0-1 ahead. However Enniskillen reduced the gap to two with a brace of points from impressive full forward John Rehill.

The sides exchanged further points before an own goal put the Fermanagh men in front for the first time. Dromore recovered from that setback and scores from Mark Mc Grade and Caolan Mc Carron tied the scores with five minutes of the half remaining.

Enniskillen were growing in confidence and struck for a second goal following some fine creative play from their forwards. The ball eventually made its way to the edge of the Dromore square where Ronan Beattie applied the finishing touch to put his side 2-4 to 0-7 in front. Conor Love extended the lead with a nice point but back again came Dromore and late points from Cahir Goodwin and Nathan Mc Carron left only a point between the teams at the break.

Dromore's recent run of competitive games stood to them in the second half as they camped in their opponents' half for most of the third quarter. An opportunist goal from John Mac Rory followed by two points from the boot of Oran Sludden put the blues in a strong position as the game entered the final quarter. Enniskillen eventually awoke from their slumbers but found the Dromore defence a tough nut to crack. Caolan Slevin, Ruairi Teague and Padraig Quinn worked very hard to deny the Fermanagh side time on the ball. Enniskillen did reduce the gap to a single point with thirteen minutes left but it was the Tyrone side that finished strongest with points from Mark Mc Grade, Caolan Mc Carron and Pearse Mc Nabb sealing a 1-14 to 2-7 win.

Magherafelt O'Donovan Rossa v Inniskeen

The first quarter final of the Paul McGirr U16 Club Champions Tournament takes place this Saturday morning with an intriguing tie between Derry champions Magherafelt O'Donovan Rossa and Monaghan's Inniskeen Grattans.  Magherafelt are being tipped by many as the pre tournament favourites having emerged from a very strong Derry championship having defeated 2013 All Ireland Feile finalists Dungiven and an impressive Swatragh team who pushed them all the way in the county final.  As with most Magherafelt teams they are a physically imposing side who play a direct style of football with several of their players featuring strongly on the Derry U16 panel they will be highly confident of success.  According to O'Donovan Rossa Chairman Jarlath Conway the challenge is one which they are certainly looking forward to "Having overcome Dungiven, Limavady, Bellaghy and Swatragh the players, management and supporters of O'Donovan Rossa GAC, Magherafelt, are very excited about being involved in this competition in memory of Paul McGirr, especially as it has been 6 years since we last reached this stage.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank St Dympnas GAC for the fantastic work that they do in hosting this competition which is now in its 16th year, and also to wish all the other clubs involved in this competition the very best of luck".

It will be a momentus occasion for their opponents Inniskeen Grattans, who are entering the competition for the first time.  They will be coming in to the game as underdogs but this is a tag that they are well used to having overcame a very talented Carrickmacross team in the Monaghan final and manager Anthony Keenan feels that the occasion will not phase his team "The inniskeen grattans are looking forward to the tournament. It's the first time in our history winning the county u-16 Championship. There is a nice balance to the team with strong players on every line.  Seamus Kindlon (captain) at full back sets the platform while in midfield Andrew Woods and Ciaran McNulty are a match for anyone. In the forwards Aidan Woods and Pauric McGahon are a handful for any defence and we certainly feel that it will take a very strong team to overcome us".
The match throws in at 12:00 in Gardrum Park Dromore and it certainly seems to be a competitive fixture that will please a lot of the neutrals.  All proceeds from the tournament go to the Spirit Of Paul McGirr Trust for their work with the poor in Lusaka, Kenya.

Bredagh v Clann Eireann Press Release
The second quarter final of the Paul McGirr U16 Club Champions Tournament this weekend is seen by many as the tie of the round featuring an intriguing battle between Down champions Bredagh and Armagh's Clann Eireann.  Bredagh were not fancied to come out of Down as they were drawn out in the quarter finals against reigning Paul McGirr champions Burren who featured many of the players that won the tournament in 2014.  However following an intensive physical battle played in poor conditions Bredagh emerged winners and went on to defeat Downpatrick in the county final.  The win over Burren will have given managers Martin Durkan, Mark Donegan, Martin Hanratty and their team great belief that they can go the whole way in the competition and keep the title in the Mourne county.  Backboned by Michael Napier, Liam O'Keefe, Brendan Gallen, Shaun Lyttle and Eamon Carville the South Belfast boys are a physically imposing side and there is no doubt they will take some stopping in the competition.

Clann Eireann put up a great showing in their visit to the Paul McGirr tournament last year pushing eventual winners Burren all the way only to lose out agonisingly by a single point.  Many of that team will return again to Gardrum Park on Sunday and last years experience will have stood them in great stead.  Having comfortably completed the league and championship double in Armagh they comprehensively defeated Killeavy by sixteen points in the county final but managers Martin and Michael McConville and Gary McLeary will be in no doubt that the challenges will be much tougher over the next few weeks as they step up to Ulster level. Known as an attacking team who like to run the ball, the Lurgan boys have a superb defence who have conceded very little all season, Bredagh will have to fight hard for every score they an get.  The game has a 1:00 throw in this Sunday in Gardrum Park and a great crowd is expected to see two of the top youth teams in the province battle it out for a semi final place.

Magherafelt O'Donovan Rossa 3-10 v Inniskeen 0-10

Magherafelt justified their favourites tag to become the first team into the semi finals of the Paul McGirr U16 Club Champions Tournament on Saturday but it was a game where the scoreline definitely did not reflect the game with Monaghan champions Inniskeen squandering a number of gilt edged goal scoring chances that would have swung the game in their favour.  Magherafelt started well and it took Inniskeen keeper Chris Martin to pull off a superb save to deny them an early goal.  Two early frees from Aidan Woods got Inniskeen off the mark but Magherafelt replied with points from Simon McErlain and midfielder Cormac Murphy, Murphy was to have a great influence in the game showing a superb work rate this throughout.  Attacking half back Declan Martin gave the Derry boys the lead before man of the match Caolan Coyle got the first goal of the game for them when he pounced on a rebound after another great save from Shane Martin.  Inniskeen showed their intentions by responding well, scoring three of the next four points through miidfielders Ciaran McNulty and Andrew  Woods as well as one from Aidan Woods.  Shea Donnelly kept Magherafelt in from with two points to go into the half time break 1-05 to 0-05 ahead.

Harry Monahan had a chance to immediately put Inniskeen level but a poor finish was the first of four good second half goal chances that the south Monaghan were left to rue.  A fine score from Ciaran McNulty from the right wing reduced the deficit before the three point advantage was restored by a volleyed point from Ryan Kearns after a penetrating run from Murphy.  Points were swapped between Aidan Woods and Murphy as Patrick McLarnon in the Magherafelt goal reacted sharply to deny Woods a goal.  Two points from midfielders McNulty and Andrew Woods reduced the deficit to the minimum midway through the second half but this was a s good as it got for them with Magherafelt's main men Coyle and Murphy taking the game by the scruff of the neck.  Coyle converted a point after winning an Inniskeen kick out and then Murphy capitalised on a poor kick out to score his teams second goal.  Coyle again stepped up to put the game beyond reach converting a penalty after a foul on Ben McErlain.  Magherafelt manager Oliver Monaghan was understandably delighted to progress to the semi final "We are very relieved to have got through after a tough game, we had watched some DVD's of Inniskeen and knew that their big men down the middle would be hard to stop.  Inniskeen were very unlucky missing four goal chances and it took some fantastic saves from Patrick McLarnon to keep us in the game.  Our defence has been the benchmark of the team and it was a fantastic performance from them, we have been training since the 11th of January and are glad to keep our season going".

Teams:  Magherafelt – Patrick Mcarnon, Liam Og McElhone, Conor McCluskey, Ciaran Shields, Declan Martin (0-1),  Caolan Coyle (2-01, 1 Pen), Cianan McCann, Cormac Murphy (1-02), Peter Tohill, Cathal Martin, Odhran Lynch, Simon McErlain (0-1), Ben McErlain (0-1f), Ryan Kearns (0-1) and Shea Donnely (0-2).  Subs  Jack Diamond for C McCann, Aaron McKee for O Lynch, Emmett Young for B McErlain, James Beggan (0-1) for S Donnelly, Eoghan Hawe for C Martin and Ciaran McKeever for R Kearns

Inniskeen – Shane Martin, Gavin Dooley, Seamus Kindlon, Shane Hanratty, Padraig Russell, Christopher Hanratty, Dylan Curtis, Ciaran McNulty (0-3), Andrew Woods (0-3, 1f), Harry Monahan, Jack Hoey, Jarlath McGahon, Pauric McGahon, Aidan Woods (0-4, 2f) and Aaron Keenan

Clann Eireann 2-14 v Bredagh 0-08
Armagh's Clann Eireann produced the performance of the Paul McGirr U16 Club Champions Tournament so far to easily dispose of a Bredagh team who came in to the tournament in high hopes having defeated holders Burren in the Down championship.  In a wind assisted first half, Bredagh took the early initiative with points from Ryan Lewsley, Jack Conlon and two from Rioghan Meehan.  A wonder save from Liam Francis denied the raiding Conlon a goal and several other goal chances were squandered as the Bredagh defence were constantly under pressure.  Full forward Shaun Lyttle registered Bredagh's first point with a superb 40 yard free into the face of the gale force wind.  Two further points from the impressive Tiernan Kelly and Aodhan McConville extended the Clann Eireann advantage, the pace and ball winning ability from man of the match McConville throughout the game was to be a constant thorn for the Bredagh back line.  Bredagh finally awakened from their slumber with the towering Cormac O'Rawe, Jake Carlin and the hard working Ronan Costello beginning to have a bigger influence on the game and two converted frees from Lyttle and Lorcan Fahy gave them hope going into the break 0-7 to 0-3 behind.

The wind which was having a telling factor should have given the Down men great hope going into the second half and another Fahy free reduced the deficit.  However at this stage Clann Eireann really upped their game and showed incredible pace and passing ability combined with efficiency in front of goal to totally control the remainder of the game.  Kelly set the tone with a great score from a tight angle and a driving run from him tee'd up McConville for the first goal of the game.  Points from Ruairi McConville, Conlon, Aodhan McConville and another from Kelly extended the lead before Bredagh replies from Matthew Hamilton and Lyttle.  Sean McCarthy and Fahy swapped scores before Rioghan Meehan who was having a superb second half scored a brilliant individual goal for Clann Eireann dancing past several Bredagh defenders.  A point from Meehan and one in reply from Lyttle rounded out the game and Clann Eireann's manager Mairtin McConville stated that there would be much more to come from the Armagh boys "We didn't perform in the first half and missed a lot of chances, but the players spoke among themselves at half time and really upped their performance in the second half which we were very pleased with.  Our tackling, decision making and shooting improved immensely and we are really looking forward to the semi final now".

Teams – Clann Eireann: Chris McAlinden, Thomas French, Adam O'Connor, Rory Shine, Jack Conlon (0-2), Jack Haddock, Callum Magee, Conor Turbitt, Sean McCarthy (0-1), Rioghan Meehan (1-3, 1f), Tiernan Kelly (0-3), Ethan Kearney (0-1), Ruairi McConville (0-1), Aodhan McConville (1-2) and Ryan Lewsley (0-1).  Subs Oscar McKeagney for S McCarthy

Bredagh: Liam Francis, Cillian Durkan, Ruairi Green, Matthew McKeogh, Michael Napier, Jake Carln, Matthew McAreavey, Matthew Hamilton (0-1), Cormac O'Rawe, Ronan Costello, Liam O'Keefe, Jospeh Blayney, Eamon Carville, Shaun Lyttle (0-4, 3f) and Lorcan Fahy (0-3, 3f).  Subs Joseph McKee for M Napier, Tim Cunningham for R Green, Niall McFarland for L O'Keefe, Tiarnan Quinn for R Costello and Odhran Davis for C Durkan

Southern Gaels v O'Donovan Rossa

The third Quarter Final in the Pall McGirr U16 Club Champions Tournament takes place on Saturday morning at 12:00 in Gardrum Park Dromore and it is an intriguing tie between the highly promising Antrim champions O'Donovan Rossa and tournament debutants Southern Gaels of Cavan.  Both teams have had great season so far winning league and championship double's and indeed in Rossa's case it has been an extra special season having also secured the Antrim hurling title as well with 16 of their players being on both panels.  Rossa also have pedigree in the tournament having won it on their last visit and this is something team mentor Hugh McGettigan pointed to as a motivating factor "Having won the Paul McGirr in 2011 O'Donovan Rossa, Belfast are very happy to return to this  prestigious tournament. These current crop of lads stood on the sidelines 4 years ago cheering on their older club mates hoping some day they would reach the pinnacle of u16 club football in Ulster.  Having progressed from u14 with a winners and runners up medal in All Ireland Feile in hurling and football respectively, This team, this year have won all  county championships and league  titles in hurling and football undefeated. In progressing to the Paul McGirr Rossa had to overcome a strong All Saints team from Ballymena by 6 points in the county final.  We are looking forward to the challenge of Southern Gaels from Cavan on Saturday and expect a highly competitive game.  We thank the Dromore GAA people and the family of Paul McGirr for this opportunity to represent Antrim once again in 2015".

Southern Gaels will be visiting Gardrum Park for the first time but with several players on the Cavan development squads they will not be short in confidence and won't be overawed by the occasion, joint manager Kevin Madden feels that the game can't come soon enough for his team "I would firstly like to thank the Dromore club and the organisers of the Paul McGirr Tournament for the invitation. This will be our first attendance at this very prestigious tournament and we are delighted to be taking part. I was delighted to be in attendance at the launch night and I was struck by the level of organisation and commitment by the club and the family of the foundation that is the Spirit of Paul McGirr Trust. For many of our young players this will be their opportunity to pitch themselves against the best under 16 players in Ulster and as such we are looking forward to our first game against O'Donovan Rossa on Saturday . As a group of players we have enjoyed a great season in our own County league and Championship and this is our opportunity to take it to another level ".  Southern Gaels overcame Cavan holders Ramor United and Crosserlough on their way to the Cavan title but have suffered a blow with the loss of star forward Oisin Pierson who scored the clinching goal in the county final.  They still have impressive performers in Ryan Madden, Peter Galligan, Eoin O'Reilly and Cian Madden.  However the Rossa boys will be entering the game as favourites and are being tipped by many to repeat their Paul McGirr success of 2011, as the first part of a double header on Saturday there will be huge interest in both games.

Dromore v St. Eunan's Letterkenny

Tyrone U16 champions Dromore face a very difficult task in the Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament this Saturday when they face Donegal champions St. Eunan's Letterkenny.  Dromore, appearing in the competition for the first time as Tyrone champions in the tournament's 16 year history, defeated Enniskillen Gaels 1-14 to 2-07 in the preliminary round and they will be hoping home advantage and a large St. Dympna's support will drive them on as they seek to progress to the semi final.  However in St. Eunan's they will be facing a team well accustomed to the tournament as regular visitors and a team who have featured regularly in semi finals and finals in recent years.  Having also secured the Donegal U14 title this season youth football is certainly on a high in the Letterkenny club and under the management of Paul McGovern they will be entering the competition with a great degree of confidence.  Having been defeated by rivals Sean MacCumhaills in the Donegal Northern Board final, St. Eunan's gained revenge over the same opposition in the county final.  Earlier in the competition St. Eunans also defeated pre tournament favourites Naomh Conaill and they also won the Ulster Og Sport title in 2014, defeating many of the teams in this years Paul McGirr tournament on the way to the title.
Dromore though are a team who have been improving steadily throughout the season and emerged from a competitive Tyrone championship following a convincing replay victory over Loughmacrory.  Their performance in the preliminary round against Enniskillen Gaels was perhaps their best of the season so far and had they have been a bit more clinical in front of goals then the winning margin would have been much more convincing, however according to joint manager Joe Rafferty they cannot afford such profligacy as the tournament progresses "Our build up play at times against Enniskillen was superb but our final product was certainly not something that we were pleased with, it really is one part of our game which we must improve on if we are to reach the semi finals.  Our midfield pairing of Cahir Goodwin and Caolan McCarron dominated against the Fermanagh men and provided the perfect platform for us and we hope that they can repeat this performance on Saturday.  The experience of finally getting to play in the Paul McGirr tournament has been great for the boys and it has given everyone at the club a boost, hopefully on Saturday we can put in a performance worthy of the occasion and if we can be that more efficient up front then I don't think we will be too far away at the final whistle".  While the loss of inspirational full back Ciaran McDermott for the rest of the season has been a huge blow to Dromore team, Ruairi Teague, Caolan Slevin and Mark McGrade have been superb in defence and they quelled the Enniskillen threat superbly.  Up front the return to fitness after long term injury of Odhran Rafferty has been a huge boost and he along with Oran Sludden, Nathan McCarron and Pearse McNabb will prove a handful for the Letterkenny defence.  John MacRory was the goal scoring hero against Enniskillen and he will be hoping to maintain his recent rich scoring vein.  The highlight of the game though promises to be the midfield battle between the powerful Cahir Goodwin and St. Eunans towering Patrick McColgan.  The game has a 2:00 throw in at Gardrum Park and the game will be preceded at 12:00 by the other quarter final battle between Antrim champions O'Donovan Rossa and Cavan's Southern Gaels.  All proceeds from the games go to the Spirit Of Paul McGirr Trust in support of their work with the poor in Lusaka, Zambia.

Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament

Dromore 0-13 St.Eunan's 1-7

Dromore are into the semi-finals of the prestigious Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament after they had three points to spare over a battling St.Eunan's of Letterkenny side at Gardrum Park on Saturday afternoon.

Both sides deserve immense credit for the football that they produced in trying weather conditions with the St.Dympnas full value for their victory. After leading 0-7 to 0-5 at the break they hit a purple patch in the second half which yielded them five unanswered scores to build up a matching winning lead. To their credit the Donegal champions battled back to set up a tense finish when Louis Hasson scored a goal but Dromore didn't panic as they held out for a narrow victory.

Dromore centre half back Mark McGrade was awarded the man of the match award but special mention must also go to fellow defenders Ruairi Teague and Paudie Quinn, the latter holding dangerman Oisin Purdy scoreless. Caolan McCarron, Odhran Rafferty and team captain Oran Sludden were other players to the fore in what was in essence a good team performance from Dromore on a day when eight different players featured on the scoresheet for them. Aaron Deeney, Louis Hasson, Niall Hannigan and Michael McGroary all played well for St.Eunan's. Dromore joint manager Joe Rafferty was delighted with the win.

"Both sides deserve great credit for the football that they produced in difficult weather conditions," said Joe.

"It was our best display of the season to date and I was particularly pleased with the way that the lads dealt with the defensive system which St.Eunans deployed."

It was Dromore who looked the livelier side early on but they missed a few chances and it was centre half forward Hannigan who opened the scoring for St.Eunan's with a well taken sixth minute point. John MacRory and McGroary then exchanged points before a forty metre free from the boot of Caolan McCarron levelled matters at the end of the opening quarter. A Hannigan free was followed by a fine point from play from the impressive Hasson but St.Eunan's were to score just once more in the first half as Dromore assumed control.

Pearse McNabb, McGrade, Sludden, MacRory and Rafferty were all on target for the winners with the latter's the score of the game after going past three challenges to score with his weaker left foot. McNabb was then denied a goal after Ronan McGeehin made a good save before Eoin McGeehin had the final say of the half to leave it 0-7 to 0-5.

Dromore picked up where they had left off on the restart with Caolan McCarron knocking over another placed ball before a superb move the length of the field resulted in Nathan McCarron splitting the posts. In the 38th minute Hannigan charged through on goal before being fouled by Cahir Goodwin who was black carded, Hannigan converting the resulting free himself.

It was at this stage that Dromore really came of age as they lifted their game after losing the influential Goodwin. Sludden fired over a brace of points with McCarron on target from another free to leave them ahead by double scores going into the final ten minutes, 0-12 to 0-6. Any thoughts that they had the game won though were quickly dispelled when first of all Hasson pointed before the same player pulled on a loose ball to send to the net to cut the gap to two. Dromore though retained possession well as they waited for an opening and it came in the form of a superb point from Ruairi Gallagher. St.Eunan's now needed a goal to force extra time but Dromore held on to reach the last four.

O'Donovan Rossa 4-09 v Southern Gaels 1-03

A power-packed second half display saw impressive Antrim champions O'Donovan Rossa convincingly defeat Cavan's Southern Gaels in the last of the quarter finals of the Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament on Saturday afternoon.  Southern Gaels played a very defensive style of football with thirteen men behind the ball and it took the Rossa boys some time to break the system down but with man of the match Dominic McEnhill and Michael Close in excellent form the result was never in doubt.  Scores were hard to come by early on, but when they did come it was in the form of two goals for the winners.  The first came from full forward Conor O'Neill who reacted sharply to palm the ball to the net when a Michael Close free rebounded off the crossbar.  This was immediately followed by another from Close when his attempt at a point from narrow angle deceived Southern Gaels keeper Macken.  Tiarnan Murphy was next on the scoresheet coming raiding from half back to score a point.  Southern Gaels were in trouble and it was at this stage their talented midfielder and captain Peter Galligan came to the fore with some fine fielding and attacking play.  He got his team off the mark with a fine point and then following a driving run from his midfield partner Eoin O'Reilly Southern Gaels got their only goal of the game with Galligan expertly converting to the bottom corner.  Galligan converted a free he had won himself to put just two between the sides and his side were well on top with only the woodwork on two occasions preventing the Cavan boys from taking the lead.  Firstly a rasping twenty yard shot from  Galligan came off the crossbar with keeper Byrne well beaten and then in their next attack wing back Sean Martin seen his effort rebound off the base of the post.  A Rossa free from Connell Devine ended the first half scoring to leave the half time score 2-02 to 1-02.
The game was evenly poised with spectators expecting a tight second half but whatever Rossa manager Dominic McEnhill said at half time certainly had the desired effect as his troops emerged a re-invigoured team and immediately set about extending their lead.  Eoghan McMenamin got the scoring underway with a point before the impressive McEnhill rose high to field a Macken kickout, carried the ball forty yards and finished superbly to the net for his sides third goal.  Frees from Close and Devine extended the lead as Rossa really started to boss the proceedings.  Southern Gaels top marksman Oisin Pierson scored his only and his sides final score midway through the second half, but Pierson who was superbly marshalled throughout by Rossa captain Michael McGreevey could not make any further impact as the game progressed.  Points from Close and three from Devine sandwiched another goal from McEnhill as Rossa ran out convincing winners, qualifying for the semi finals where they will face Tyrone champions Dromore on Sunday afternoon.
Teams:

O'Donovan Rossa:  Michael Byrne, Conall Shannon, Matthew McIvor, Lorcan Fitzsimons, Manus Smith, Michael McGreevey, Tiarnan Murphy, Eoghan McMenamin, Martin McCashin, Dominic McEnhill, Daire Matthews, Emmet Burns, Connell Devine, Conor O'Neill, Michael Close.  Subs: Cormac McGettigan for Matthews
Southern Gaels:  Aaron Macken, Paul Brady, Ryan Coye, Paul Langtry, Sean Martin, Ryan Madden, Aaron Brady, Peter Galligan, Eoin O'Reilly, Donal Finnegan, Cian Madden, Rhys Hudson, Tristan Lynch, Oisin Pierson and Aodghan Halton

I'm just curious, how many people live in the catchment area of O Donovan Rossa? I know it would be too hard a question for hardstation so does anyone else have a rough idea? I'm sure you all know I am just trying to make a point at a certain fools belittling of a team as they are an amalgamation and I am certainly not belittling O Donovan Rossa.

I'm not sure about the numbers but on the Shaw's road alone there is St Paul's, Rossa, Sarsfields and St Theresa's (correct me if I am wrong). So not all players in the area would be going straight to Rossa I presume?

No one has questioned the amalgamation, just snide remarks. If anyone wants to question it work away and we can debate it out. The fact is that the clubs in Southern Gaels are too small to put U16 & minor teams together and its a fine achievement for them to be winning county titles. It is also a fact that outside Leitrim, Cavan has the highest proportion of clubs per population in the country which is why clubs are in this position and is indeed a problem in general in Cavan football.

To flesh this out I am asking what the Rossa club local population is and I'll try and find out what Southern Gaels is. If you prefer could you let us know how many members does the Rossa club have? Of course if data gets in the way of a mindless moan then fire away and I'll leave ye to it.

Haven't been up there in a long time so can't remember!

Quite  a few clubs in very close proximity up there. You have all those ones in shaws road then st galls, st johns and o'donnells are on top of each other too.

Still none of them, bar maybe o'donnels, struggle for numbers so they may not understand the struggles of rural clubs...

Not sure. The southern gaels sounds almost like one of kerry's divisional teams. I've never seen, in antrim, any amalgamation with above 3(maybe 4 but not 100% sure on that) teams.

It is becoming increasingly harder for rural areas to field teams these days though. If they can't field on their own I'd be in favour of it(within reason).

Why not?
What if an amalgamated team has combined 200 members and plays a standalone team with 800 members. I don't get this attitude.

There is 2 teams in the Southern Gaels amalgamation, hardly the same as Kerry Divisional teams.

If the Ulster Council bring in a rule not to allow amalgamations compete, I doubt Cavan Clubs will be bothered either way. The goal for those Clubs is to compete at a high level in Division 1, to play in Ulster is only a bonus. Though it should be played earlier then late November when the ground is in shite.

Two teams is no big deal. Stinsons have done it in antrim for years

Most of the underage Ulster comps are "unofficial" is that correct? If so then I guess the clubs that organise the comps have the call on who can enter. I don't recall many amalgamated teams winning u16 or minor recently ( though it's hard to remember anyone other than glen winning the St. Paul's tourney in recent years)?

Well going by your theory should we grade clubs by the number of members they have. So what happens in a situation where the single club has 300 members and the amalgamated club has 400 members??

You assume every urban/semi-urban club is a hive of activity centred around the GAA club. Urban clubs have plenty of problems themselves to contend with, namely around social & welfare issues not to mention the other sports on offer to their playing base.

Why is it ok for an amalgamated team to enter a county championship and not a provincial one?  Surely it should be at least consistent.

The fact that one Cavan club won a minor league on their own but still amalgamated come championship suggests that it's much more than simply being short numbers in Cavan. It seems to me that it is more about trying to win things. It's no surprise that nearly every Cavan minor championship winner has been a throw together over the last few years.

That only happened once. It was Bailieborough and Sherocock. Kingscourt won the Division 2 League and joined with them for the Championship. Every other amalgamation has been together since the start of the year.

You would also want to do some reserach on the last few Minor Championship winners in Cavan. Ramor won it this year, they aren't an amalgamation. They also won it in 2013. A few years before that it was Cavan Gaels dominating

Thank god no rural teams have to contend with these problems.

I brought up the club size originally to illustrate a point. Hardstation would have you believe that clubs in Cavan are joining together with the sole purpose of winning and not to field teams. My point was you can have unfair populations within the GAA already with single clubs. For example Cavan Gaels in my own county would be multiple sizes bigger than the likes of Southern Gaels. So when that is considered, why would you go out and discriminate against a small rural amalgamation. I know Hardstation hasnt a clue what he is talking about but I was hoping I could help some people to understand this point of view.

I think some people just underestimate the rural nature of some counties. Armagh for example has a raft of amalgamations you'd near lose count. Plenty of division 1 clubs too

I understand and have no issue with amalgamations.

Very difficult for small rural clubs to have a full team at all underage levels. City (Belfast) teams often have big numbers but you'd often see a good young player transfer from a small city club that either couldn't field a team at a particular underage level or were just shite. The transfer may only be for that underage competition but often results in a full transfer. I know teams in Belfast like L Dhearg and Galls have benefitted from that over the years. It would be far more beneficial for the smaller club to simply have an amalgamation at underage and keep their players, if that means the amalgamated club wins a County or even Ulster from time to time so be it.

I was driving through Templeport the other week and saw the bunting and then checked to see what the story was--they were in the Ulster Junior Club Championship, Cavan Champions. The area beside their pitch was so sparse of housing I couldn't believe they could field a Senior, never mind an underage team (im sure they cant). Pat Splillane talked of his pride at Templenoe winning a Junior Kerry Championship last week, stating it was near impossible to field a team, with not one player able to get work in the local rural area, all travelling home to play, making huge sacrifices.

It's easy in Belfast or Dublin (where the work is and people are living) to say we have huge numbers and berate others for not having the same.

I would have no issue whatsoever with amalgamations to field a team and it has happened at underage in my own county. Genuine question here, are Southern Gaels made up of more than 3 clubs? If so, could a team be fielded if 2+ clubs each amalgamated?

Nope, 2 Clubs. Lacken and Gowna.

Cavan have had some success recently at County level under age, Minor and U21 though amalgamations success at Club level. Maybe Hardstaion should get a few of those big Belfast City Clubs to amalgamate. Antrim haven't had much to shout about at County level.

Clann Eireann v Magherafelt O'Donovan Rossa Preview

The first semi final of the Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament takes place this Saturday at 2:00 in Gardrum Park and it is an enticing tie between Derry Champions Magherafelt O'Donovan Rossa and Armagh's Clann Eireann.  Magherafelt had a nine point victory over Inniskeen in their opening game and some of their attacking play was of a very high standard with their main scoring threat coming from their central diamond of Caolan Coyle, Peter Tohill, Odhran Lynch and Cormac Murphy.  Coyle and Murphy were particularly impressive as they continually drove forward and Clann Eireann will have to work hard to curb their threatening runs.  Lynch is a towering figure at centre half forward and Magherafelt will be looking for him to dominate the aerial exchanges with his physical presence.  However the Derry boys will certainly have to improve on their defensive performance from the quarter final as only the poor finishing of Inniskeen and the brilliance of goalkeeper Patrick McLarnon prevented them from conceding goals on four or five separate occasions, this is one aspect of the game which Clann Eireann will be looking to exploit.  Manager Oliver Monaghan though is looking forward to the occasion "O'Donovan Rossa Magherafelt are looking forward to the game on Saturday against Clann Eireann in the Paul Mc Girr Tournament. Clann Eireann look to be a very strong opposition which is what you would expect at this stage of an Ulster Semi Final. We have been unlucky losing a couple of players due to injuries which have come on the back of a long hard season. Hopefully the conditions won't prevent an enjoyable game of football for both teams and supporters on Saturday afternoon".  Magherafelt play a patient short passing style of football and like to build from defence, but the high press employed by Clann Eireann in the quarter final could cause trouble for them.

Clann Eireann, managed by Mairtin McConville and Gary McCleary  put in perhaps the performance of the tournament so far when they comprehensively defeated highly fancied Down champions Bredagh 2-14 to 0-08 in the opening round in a display that left many of the neutral specatators marking them as tournament favourites.  It was an impressive showing from the Lurgan boys particularly in the second half facing a strong wind and in man of the match Aodhan McConville they have a star in the making.  McConville was in imperious form and his pace and accuracy will provide a huge task for Magherafelt full back Conor McCluskey.  Rioghan Meehan, scorer of 1-03 against Bredagh, is another man that the Magherafelt boys will have to pay particular attention to as the flame haired wing forward was a constant threat with his tireless workrate.  Centre back Jack Conlon and midfielder Conor Turbitt were the catalyst for many of the Clann Eireann attacks and their team will be hoping they can gain a foothold in the middle in what promises to be a fascinating contest.  Manager Mairtin McConville although confident was in no doubt as to the challenge facing his team "Our boys are delighted to be competing at this level and in particular to have overcome down champions Bredagh in the quarter final.  At the same time we are under no illusions about the difficulty in facing Magherafelt.  Everyone is well aware of the competitiveness of the Derry championship and any team which comes out of Derry will be formidable.  Having said that there is great belief within this squad of players and they will be up for the challenge ahead on Saturday".  This is a game which would be very hard to call, if Magherafelt can tighten their defence then they will be in with a serious chance of progressing to next Sunday's final, however the betting man would tip the odds slightly in favour of Clann Eireann with their overall strength and workrate.

Dromore U16's will this weekend be looking to make history for their club when they compete in the semi-final of the Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament against Antrim champions O'Donovan Rossa.  It has already been a memorable season for the Dromore boys with two victories already to their name in the tournament over strong Enniskillen Gaels and St. Eunan's Letterkenny teams, but a victory this Sunday would mean a first ever Ulster Final appearance for the club.  However, the Falls Road boys will prove a major obstacle to overcome after they emphatically accounted for Cavan champions Southern Gaels on a 4-09 to 1-03 margin last Saturday, out-scoring their opponents 2-07 to 0-01 in the second half.  Rossa have a very strong backbone with captain Michael McGreevey at full back and the tenacious Michael McIvor at centre half, both players playing a major role in keeping Southern Gaels to just four scores over the hour.  In midfield Eoghan McMenamin is a dominant figure and with forwards of the calibre of Dominic McEnhill and Michael Close the Dromore rearguard will have to be on toes at all times.  Accordingly to Rossa manager Dominic McEnhill they are expecting things a bit tougher this week than last "We believe this is step up in level, with no disrespect to last weekend's opposition who provided a tough task for the our boys. It's the semi final against the host club who progressed from a highly competitive Tyrone championship and who have two tough games under their belt in this competition.  Our boys are eagerly awaiting this game and hope that the expected large crowd will see and enjoy a high quality game of football played in the right spirit and a fitting tribute to the memory of Paul Mc Girr".

Dromore though will be going into the game in confident fashion and according to joint manager Joe Rafferty they are not going along to make up the numbers "Having struggled to get out of Tyrone this year there was no doubt our boys were under-performing as we knew they were capable of much more.  However with the pressure off after winning the county title, it has been great to see them throw off the shackles and their performances so far in the Paul McGirr have been of the highest order, there is much more cohesion in their play and every player has been upping their game with each hurdle they have met.  Against St. Eunan's our defence was superb and it was the lesser known players on the team like Jamie Louis Law, Mark McGrade, Ruairi Teague, Cathal Colton, Padraig Quinn, John MacRory, Ruairi Gallagher and Nathan McCarron who really impressed.  The workrate, running off the ball and tenacity in the tackle were all first class.  We have a lot of scoring options in the team and against St. Eunan's we had eight different players on the scoresheet, this has been a feature of our play all year.  Rossa will be another step up in class but I don't think the challenge will phase the boys and hopefully come Sunday evening we will be looking forward to a first ever Ulster final for Dromore which would be a massive occasion for the club".

Caolan Slevin has been a constant driving force in the Dromore defence and the Gardum Park boys will certainly look to his leadership on Sunday afternoon.  The midfield duo of Cahir Goodwin and Caolan McCarron have been dominant in their games so far while up front the pace of Odhran Rafferty and Pearse McNabb will prove a handful for the Rossa defence.  However it could be the battle between the prolific Dromore captain Oran Sludden and McGreevey which could decide the outcome of the game.

Both teams play an attacking style of football so weather permitting a high scoring affair is in store and no doubt the home team will have a huge Dromore and Tyrone backing cheering them on.  The game takes place at 2:00 on Sunday afternoon in Gardrum Park.  The first semi final takes place on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 between Armagh champions Clann Eireann and Derry's Magherafelt and this looks set to be an enticing affair with both teams having been highly impressive in their quarter finals.  As usual all proceeds from the tournament go the 'The Spirit Of Paul McGirr Trust' for its continuing work for the poor in Lusaka, Gambia.

Superb game today played in torrential rain, Clann Eireann winning with an injury time point 1-08 to 1-07, serious commitment shown in the conditions by both teams, Magherafelt very unlucky to lose out, full report to follow.

Clann Eireann 1-08 v Magherafelt O'Donovan Rossa 1-07

Corner back Thomas French was the hero for Clann Eireann when he strode forward to covert a last minute point to earn his team a place in the 2015 Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Final, securing a one point win over a gallant Magherafelt O'Donovan Rossa in a superb game played in atrocious weather conditions on Saturday afternoon.  All the damage was done for the winners in a blistering start that left them 1-03 to no score ahead after fifteen minutes.  The introduction of Caolan Coyle and Giuseppe Lupari at this stage by the Magherafelt management made a huge difference but with difficult underground conditions and constant torrential rain it was always going to be difficult to make up the deficit.  Two early converted frees from Tiernan Kelly and Rioghan Meehan and a superb score from raiding centre back Jack Haddock put the Lurgan boys in control before hesitancy in the Magherafelt defence was punished in emphatic fashion with Ruairi McConville finishing superbly to the bottom corner at the end of a swift move started be Meehan.  The towering Odhran Lynch finally got the Derry champions off the mark converting a free after tenacious work by Cormac Murphy.  Lynch who had switched to midfield and Murphy fought valiantly to turn the tide and as the half progressed they started to boss the midfield proceedings. Callum Magee charged forward for another Clann Eireann point before Lynch responded again with a magnificent fifty yard free.  Meehan and Ben McErlain swapped converted frees with the introduced Caolan Coyle rounding off the scoring to leave it 1-05 to 0-04 at half time.

Magherafelt needed a good start to the second half and their wishes were answered when man of the match Cormac Murphy rounded a few Clann Eireann defenders and caught everyone by surprise with a blistering twenty one yard drive to the bottom corner of the net.  This was the boost that his side needed and immediately afterwards Simon McErlain equalised and the Magherafelt support were suddenly believing a win was possible.  However, despite their great efforts they could never manage to get in front with the levels of effort and commitment of both teams a joy to behold for the large crown in attendance.  Clann Eireann wing forward Meehan was displaying tremendous energy levels, constantly foraging in his own defence for the ball and setting up attacks for his colleagues and it was he who put his side back in front from the right wing.  Another two well placed frees from Lynch and one in response from Meehan levelled things up again and everything was set up for a tense finale with both sides giving their all in search of the winner.  However, when the winner came, it came from the most unlikely of sources when French foraging into the opposition half for the first time in the game found himself in space in the final minute and showed great composure to hit the winning point from thirty five yards, much to the delight of the travelling Clann Eireann support.  Magherafelt had one final chance in the dying seconds but desperate last ditch defending from the Clann Eireann rearguard kept them at bay to see their side progress to the Ulster U16 final for the first time.  Understandably Clann Eireann manager Mairitin McConville was delighted with the outcome "we got off to a wonderful start in the game but we knew that Magherafelt were a tremendous team and that it was going to go right down to the wire.  The standard of football was an absolute credit to both teams given the conditions and our boys showed tremendous character right to the end, Thomas being a corner back is not a prolific scorer so we were absolutely delighted to see him pop up with the winning score".

Clann Eireann: Chris McAlinden, Thomas French, Adam O'Connor, Thomas French (0-1), Jack Conlon, Jack Haddock (0-1), Callum Magee (0-1), Conor Turbitt, Sean McCarthy, Rioghan Meehan (0-4, 3f), Tiernan Kelly (0-1, 1f), Ethan Kearney, Ruairi McConville (1-0), Aodhan McConville and Ryan Lewsley.
Magherafelt – Patrick McLarnon, Liam Og McElhone, Conor McCluskey, Ciaran Shields, Declan Martin,  Aaron McKee, Cianan McCann, Cormac Murphy (1-0), Peter Tohill, Cathal Martin, Odhran Lynch (0-4, 4f), Simon McErlain (0-1), Ben McErlain (0-1, 1f), James Beggan and Shea Donnely.  Subs: Caolan Coyle (0-1) for Beggan, Ryan Kearns for Martin, Giuseppe Lupari for McCann, Johnny McAleer for McElhone

O'Donovan Rossa 5-06 v Dromore 0-06

Antrim champions O'Donovan Rossa were in blistering goal scoring form on Sunday as they overcame hosts Dromore to qualify for the 2015 Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions tournament final.  There is no doubt though that the final scoreline did not reflect the game as Dromore dominated possession for long spells but found the Rossa rearguard very hard to penetrate with Michael McGreevey and  Mattie McIvor in particular playing outstanding roles.  Domonic McEnhill was again the main scorer but he was ably assisted by half forward colleague Daire Matthews and man of the match Eoghan McMenamin who was in commanding form in midfield.  According to Rossa joint manager manager Hugh McGettigan their second goal just before half time was the turning point in the game "We are delighted to have progressed to the final of the Paul McGirr tournament, despite what the final scoreline suggests today was a seriously tough and competitive contest which we knew it would be.  Dromore are a talented and very physical side and had us under pressure for long periods of the game, I certainly think the conditions suited us better as we were the lighter team, the goal just before half time which came against the run of play was the turning point and provided us with a cushion which enabled us to sit back and hit Dromore on the break, the goals at the end put a gloss on the scoreline but we were very pleased with how the boys performed and are really looking forward to Sunday's final".  Points from Matthews and McMenmin gave Rossa an early advantage before Caolan McCarron opened Dromore's account with a free.  Points were then swapped between McEnhill and Dromore's Cahir Goodwin before McEnhill pounced on a ball in behind the Dromore defence and finished emphatically past the hapless Ross Hunter for the opening goal.  Rossa captain McGreevey added to their lead striding forward from defence with McCarron replying with an excellent score from play.  Then the turning point came when Matthews carried the ball forty yards and found the bottom corner just before the half time whistle.

Dromore needed a strong second half and with Odhran Rafferty who was now playing a deeper role, Caolan Slevin and Caolan McCarron all winning possession and constantly driving forward they again started to dominate but the Rossa defence was not going to be penetrated easily and the hosts failed to turn possession into scores.  After soaking up some early pressure, Rossa finally broke up the field and a converted Michael Close free was followed by a great individual McEnhill goal when he rounded his marker on the sideline fifty yards out and left a trail of defenders in his wake to score his second.  McCarron replied with three Dromore frees as Rossa ensured Dromore were not getting through for the goals they required.  Then in the dying minutes both McEnhill and Matthews took advantage of the wide open spaces left in the Dromore defence as they were chasing the game for the final two goals.  Rossa now progress to face Clann Eireann in what promises to be a cracking final on Sunday at 2:00.

Dromore - Ross Hunter, Caolan Slevin, Ruairi Teague, Padraig Quinn, Oisin Gallogly, Mark McGrade, Cathal Colton, Cahir Goodwin (0-1), Nathan McCarron, Odhran Rafferty, Caolan McCarron (0-5, 4f), Pearse McNabb, Ruairi Gallagher, Oran Sludden, John MacRory. Sub – Ross Slevin for Gallagher, Oisin McConnell for Colton

O'Donovan Rossa - Michael Byrne, Conall Shannon, Matthew McIvor, Lorcan Fitzsimons, Manus Smith, Michael McGreevey (0-1), Tiarnan Murphy, Eoghan McMenamin (0-1), Martin McCashin, Dominic McEnhill (3-01), Daire Matthews (2-1), Emmet Burns, Connell Devine, Conor O'Neill, Michael Close (0-2, 2f).  Subs: Cormac McGettigan for Matthews

The scene is set in Gardrum Park Dromore this Sunday for what promises to be a sparkling tie as Armagh champions Clann Eireann and Antrim's O'Donovan Rossa battle it out for the title of the 2015 Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions.  Despite some poor weather conditions the tournament this year has been memorable in particular for some wonderful attacking displays and on Sunday we will have probably two of the best young attacking talents in the province on show in  Clann Eireann's Aodhan McConville and Rossa goal scoring sensation Dominic McEnhill.  With plenty of other top talents on show there is no doubt the expected large crowd will be treated to a top class contest with both teams having represented their club and counties with immense pride so far.

Clann Eireann would appear to have come through the tougher side of the draw having impressively disposed of a highly rated Bredagh in the quarter final and then coming out on top by the minimum margin after a massive battle last Saturday against a very strong Magherafelt team.  The hero of the semi final was corner back Thomas French who popped up with a beautiful winning point from 35 yards in the final minute, however there is no doubt that French and his defensive colleagues will have their hands full at the opposite end of the field on Sunday.  Jack Haddock at centre half back had been a rock for his side and has managed to get forward to devastating effect on several occasions in both matches so far, Conor Turbitt has shown reserves of boundless energy in midfield and the workrate, skill and free taking ability of wing forward Rioghan Meehan are something that Rossa will be determined to counter.  Manager Mairtin McConville is well aware of the task facing his side "'The boys have really enjoyed the competition so far and are looking forward to Sunday's final.  We are under no illusions about the task ahead and have been very impressed with O'Donovan Rossa in their run up to the final.  In that regard the boys know that nothing short of their best will be good enough on the day and hopefully the game will be fitting to the occasion in what is undoubtably one of the leading youth football tournaments in the GAA calendar".

Rossa overcame Cavan's Southern Gaels in the quarter final and were in devastating goal scoring form last Sunday when they surmounted the threat posed by the hosts, Tyrone champions Dromore.  Although forwards McEnhill and Daire Matthews have been grabbing the headlines having amassed 7-03 between them in the two games so far, it is their defensive strength which has been most impressive having only conceded ten scores in two games.  Central to this has been captain Michael McGreevey and Michael McIvor, both strong and tenacious players and both very disciplined in the tackle.  Rossa also boost the most impressive midfielder in the tournament so far in Eoghan McMenamin and his performance will be key to their chances of annexing the Ulster title, a title that they won in 2011.  Under the management of Dominic McEnhill, Hugh McGettigan, Déaglán Ó Murchú and Niall Crossan, the West Belfast boys will be travelling down with great hopes of rounding off what has been a terrific season in both football and hurling for this bunch of players and according to McEnhill their opponents are no strangers to them "The boys will go into this week's Paul McGirr final quietly confident they can cause an upset against Clann Eireann.  After Sundays semi-final win against host club Dromore the Rossa lads trained hard this week in preparation for the biggest day in their young football careers. We have played Clann Eireann over the years since U12 in challenge games but never in competitive competition. Those challenge games were closely contested games and we expect Sundays contest to be equally competitive.  We watched Clann Eireann in the semi-final and were very impressed with their style of play and physical strength. They have some quality defenders and their forwards were very impressive.  They are a well drilled outfit and compliments must be paid to their mentors in producing such a strong cohesive team.  Our boys are up for the task ahead and believe that with a good team performance and a bit of luck can bring the Paul McGirr trophy back to west Belfast again.  Hopefully the weather will be kind to both teams and allow the game to be a fitting finale to this prestigious tournament"

The winner would be very hard to call with both teams having put in excellent performances so far, the key to the contest will be whether Clann Eireann can quell the prolific goal threat which Rossa possess and the battle between McIvor and McConville at the other end will also be key to the outcome.  Clann Eireann had a great start last week against Magherafelt and if they begin in similar fashion this week then the Rossa boys will have to re-think their defensive strategy, so the initial fifteen minutes could go a long way to dictating the final outcome.  There is huge anticipation for the game which throws in at 2:00 on Sunday and the large crowd expected could really be in for a thrill as both sides battle it out.  All proceeds from the game and the entire tournament go the 'The Spirit Of Paul McGirr Trust' for its work with the poor and needy in Lusaka, Zambia.

Clann Eireann 2-10 v O'Donovan Rossa 0-04

Clann Eireann became the second Armagh winners in three years of the Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament when they comprehensively overcame the challenge of O'Donovan Rossa at a sunny Gardrum Park Dromore on Sunday afternoon.  While their opponents struggled to settle into the occasion, Mairitn McConville's charges put on a display of composed defending, insatiable workrate and ruthless finishing with the majority of the damaged done in the opening thirty minutes.  Rossa dominated the early possession stakes but having scored nine goals in their previous two games they failed to penetrate the Clann Eireann defence where semi final hero Thomas French was doing a great job in curbing the influence of the dangerous Dominic McEnhill, keeping him scoreless throughout.  Ruairi McConville got the first point of the game before the Antrim boys equalised via a free from Connell Devine.  Points from Ryan Lewsley and Tiernan Kelly gave their side a two point advantage before two sublime passes from the superb man of the match Rioghan Meehan changed the course of the game.  The first one resulted in a Kelly goal and the second released full forward Aodhan McConville to put his side five points up.  Manus Smyth replied before three points in a row from the raiding centre back Jack Haddock, Meehan and a wonderful outside of the boot effort from Kelly left the Lurgan boys 1-07 to 0-02 ahead at the break.

Rossa driven on by captain Michael McGreevey and Eoghan McMenamin once again started the half well and a well taken point from the determined McMenamin gave them a good start but it was their failure to capitalise on the possession during this period that was to ultimately cost their team.  Time after time the Clann Eireann defence shut them out with organised defence and disciplined tackling, the Armagh champions with captain Sean McCarthy retreating into defence always had two or three extra men back and the goals that Rossa were seeking never materialised.  Then eight minutes into the second half the game was all but over when Ruairi McConville pounced on the breaking ball after the unlucky Michael Bryne superbly denied Ethan Kearney to bundled the ball over the line for Clann Eireann's second major much to the delight of their large travelling support.  Rossa's Michael Close converted a free but this was to be his sides last score of the game as Clann Eireann tightened their grip on a first ever Ulster title at this level.  A wonder score from a narrow angle from Kelly followed by another from Haddock and the final point from Aodhan McConville sparked jubilous celebrations as McCarthy lifted the wonderful Culchuillan trophy presented by Paul McGirrs parents Francis and Rita.  Understandably winning manager Mairtin McConville and his management team were ecstatic with the result "We are absolutely delighted to win this prestigious tournament and the performance from the boys all around the park was top notch.  We have played this Rossa team on many occasions over the last few years and they have always been tough, well contested battles so we expected no less today, but the boys really rose to the occasion and were superb throughout.  There is some wonderful work going on at youth level in our club and to be crowned Ulster champions is an incredible achievement, one that we will certainly savour for years to come" said McConville.

Clann Eireann: Chris McAlinden, Thomas French, Adam O'Connor, Conor McDonald, Jack Conlon, Jack Haddock (0-2), Callum Magee, Conor Turbitt, Sean McCarthy, Rioghan Meehan (0-1), Tiernan Kelly (1-3, 1f), Ethan Kearney, Ruairi McConville (1-1), Aodhan McConville (0-2) and Ryan Lewsley (0-1)  Subs: Sean McKeown for McDonald, Rory Shine for Meehan, Oscar McKeagney for Conlon

O'Donovan Rossa:  Michael Byrne, Conall Shannon, Matthew McIvor, Jack Morris, Manus Smyth (0-1), Michael McGreevey, Tiarnan Murphy, Eoghan McMenamin (0-1), Martin McCashin, Dominic McEnhill, Daire Matthews, Emmet Burns, Connell Devine (0-1,  1f), Lorcan Fitzsimons, Michael Close (0-1, 1f).  Subs: Conor O'Neill for Devine, Cormac McGettigan for Morris, Adam Cunningham for Burns, Sean Wallace for Close, Close for Murphy

Most nights at training they have 5 or 6 adults helping out all the underage teams.  They were unfortunate in the minor final but should make amends next year.

Hi folks for any of yous that are interested the final of the Paul McGirr U16 Club Champions Tournament takes place this Sunday at 2:00 between Crossmaglen and Kilcoo, there is a bit of recent history between these two clubs so it should make for a great atmosphere, going by performances so far it promises to be a real cracker ( the kilcoo v Carrickmore semi final was one of the best games I ever witnessed), it will be ground breaking as well because the game is being brodcast live on the 'Spirit of Paul McGirr' Facebook page as well as Teamtalkmag and Tyrone Association Dublin pages, live commentary will be provided by Noel McGinn with Mark Harte and Ciaran McBride also in the studio, tune in for what should be a great game

Congratulations to Kilcoo. They were the better balanced team and looked to have more cutting edge than us. Their better players were more effective than ours which may seem obvious but at this level it is key. Hard luck to our boys....they can be proud of themselves. And a so very congratulations to Dromore. The whole thing was so well run and the streaming was great today as I wasn't able to get there.

Congrats Kilcoo and commiserations to Cross.

I was delighted to be there to present the winning medals on behalf of the Tyrone Association Dublin who were the founders of this great tournament as the county board didn't seem interested in doing anything to commemorate Paul's death.

A lad asked me what did I think about the whole process of presenting loser medals to teams and I thought it was a strange process as nobody enjoys it and it must be hard for the players and management to try to put on a brave face.
Then years later is it not just a reminder that you failed to win or do people here see it as being a positive thing?

I suppose Joe Kernan used it well in 2002 as a motivational tool.

Hi Fuzzman seen you there yesterday, I meant to get chatting to you, personally I feel presenting runners up is a good thing for underage tournaments like this as for some players this game will be the pinnacle of their career as many drop out after this age, it will be a momento for them of the occasion. I would not be in favour of it at senior level as at senior level you usually have another chance at winning what you have just lost so you have the opportunity to make up for the loss, at underage level you don't get a second chance as you move on to the next level.

Newtonbutler v An Tearmainn

The 2018 Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament kicks off this Saturday at 2:00 in Gardrum Park Dromore with an intriguing preliminary round fixture between Fermanagh champions Newtownbutler First Fermanagh's and Donegal champions An Tearmainn.  Newtownbutler are managed by Finbarr O'Keefe, Brendan Mc Brien, Martin Mc Guinness and Natie McManus and backboned by a group of players that went close to annexing the Ulster Og Sport title earlier this year.   Goalkeeper and captain Kian O'Dowd has been impressive form this season as have midfield pairing Caolan Swift and Diarmaid King but their hopes will depend a lot on how their speedy forward line can penetrate a very strong Termon defence.   The game is one which O'Keefe is looking forward to 'Whilst we are a very young team the boys have experience of playing in tournament football and are looking forward to the challenge.  In many games it has been a solid defence that has been our platform for success and this will again be vital on Saturday.  Creating and conversion of our own scoring opportunities against a Donegal defence will be an interesting test but one the boys will relish.  We are proud to represent Fermanagh on Saturday and look forward to a strong traveling support.'

Termon are newcomers to the competition but have been the dominating force in Donegal at U16 level this year having done a complete sweep of county titles, experiencing only one defeat throughout the season.  They are managed by Trevor Alcorn who is assisted by Daire McDaid, Dan Conaghan, Ricky Gallagher and Padraig Friel and came out on top by the minimum margin in an epic Donegal final against a fancied Gweedore side to claim the clubs first ever Donegal U16 title. Attacking centre back Marty Steele and the imposing midfield partnership of Jack Alcorn and Kevin McGettigan will look to provide a platform for a highly rated Termon attack and having come through a tough Donegal championship they will be heading into Saturday's game as slight favourites in what will be a momentus occasion for the blossoming Donegal club.  Manager Alcorn is very pleased with their season so far 'We set out this year with small achievable goals, to make training enjoyable, to develop players and to try to improve with every game.  Our one major goal this year was to win a county championship for the first time in the clubs history.  We are now delighted to have the opportunity to compete at the highest level at U16 in the Paul McGirr Tournament, and every game from now on is a bonus.  Our motto for the year is 'when things aren't going our way, work harder' and this is something our lads certainly go by'.  The winners of this game will advance to a quarter final against Cavan champions Gowna.

Are all counties still running u16 competitions or how are County representatives now selected?

7 out of the 9 counties still run U16's, for the other two we select the U15 winners and they can make up the team with their U16's. Was an awkward situation so this is the way we decided to go, not sure how the St Paul's U18 competition is going to do it as they are in a similar situation

Looks like Burrlen are the team to beat this year. Scored 8-15 against Magherafelt and then followed that up with 2-20 versus Gaoth Dobhair. Conceding a total of 13pts ( 9 v M'felt, 4 v GD)

Yes it looks that way.  I believe this Burren side were Division one feile winners previously?

Look, our lads have done exceptionally well.  They are a credit and will be going to give it a good rattle.

A great tournament BTW.

This Sunday two clubs steeped in the history of Ulster club competition lock horns in the final of the Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Club Champions Tournament, three times Ulster senior champions Clan Na Gael and five times Ulster senior champions Burren.  Pedigree doesn't come much better than this but it is a new generation of players from both clubs that will be seeking to create their own piece of history on Sunday afternoon in Gardrum Park Dromore in a game that will showcase some of the best underage talent in the province.

Clan Na Gael will have had the benefit of having come through what appears to be the tougher side of the draw, in the quarter final they had a tough encounter with experienced Fermanagh champions Newtownbutler and in last weekend's semi final they overcame a half time deficit to produced a stunning second half against a very physical O'Donovan Rossa.  In fact it is their second half performances that have been most impressive for the Lurgan lads, displaying levels of stamina that no other team has matched to date.  It is Clan Na Gael's half back line that has been the driving force in their Ulster campaign, Callum O'Neill, Brendan O'Hagan and in particular the tigerish Michael McConville have been imperious but they will have to be at the top of their game again this Sunday when faced with a free scoring Burren side.  Ronan O'Hagan has been dropping back into a sweeping position and his driving runs from the back have caught the eye while their midfield partnership of Odhran Reid and Cian McCrory work tirelessly for their side.  Odhran McGivern and Matthew Lennon have been their scorers in chief, the talented Lennon will be looking to add to his 4-09 tally so far in the tournament, his goals being key in his sides victories.

Clan Na Gael manager Laurence McGuinness is confident of his sides chances 'Sundays game can't come quick enough for the lads. They are absolutely buzzing and full of confidence after Saturdays game. We know we are going to be in for a very tough game against a strong and experienced Burren side, but our lads will be up for the challenge. We know we have to start strongly and keep the intensity up as we showed in the second half against Rossa. We have really embraced the Paul McGirr competition and to go out and play in the final of it is a great honour for our club. If we can iron out a few of the mistakes we made in the semi final and go out and really have a go, we won't be too far away.

Burren came into the tournament as favourites having won the 2017 All Ireland Feile title and their performances in the quarter and semi final have been outstanding, comfortably disposing of a strong Magherafelt O'Donovan Rossa and a hard hitting Ghaoth Dobhair with dazzling displays of attacking football.  While their incredible tallies have been grabbing the headlines, one cannot underestimate the role that their defence has played.  Yet to concede a goal in the competition, their back six are very competent in the tackle and highly disciplined, Patrick McCarthy at full back has been of the stars of the tournament while Ryan Magill and Eoin McKernan have also stood out, centre back Magill is the man likely to be tasked with keeping tabs on Lennon and it's a task that he will relish. Powerful midfielder Odhran Murdock has been totally dominant and the possible return to fitness of Conlin Bradley would really bolster Burren's chances.  The Burren forward line are a mix of power, strength, speed and skill every Clan Na Gael defender will be pushed to the limit to curb an attack that amassed an astonishing 10-35 in two games.  The towering Zach Murdock and James Duggan are the ideal target men while Eoin Loughran, Zach and Aaron Murdock all are well aware of where the posts are.  The man the Lurgan side will have to watch most though is centre forward Niall Toner, capable of scoring with either foot from a variety of angles, Toner appears almost impossible to mark and he is the man that could hold the key to bringing the title back to the Mournes.
Burren manager Neil Coulter is aware that his side will not have it all their own way on Sunday 'We are delighted and proud to be representing Burren in Sundays Paul McGirr U16 Ulster Final. With perseverance and determination we hope to emulate the success of our 2014 team. We have reached this years final by hard work, dedication and 100% commitment from a panel of 41 players who all played their part. Despite this we know that with Clan Na Gael (a club with Ulster Championship history) we are in for a tough game! Having watched them closely in Saturdays other semi final, they will cause us plenty of problems. With their pace and strong defensive set-up they held Rossa scoreless through the entire second half which was very impressive - we will need to be on our guard! We would like to congratulate the Dromore club on running a fantastic competition for players and supporters alike.'

The hurt of losing out in last year's semi final may provide the key ingredient for Burren as they seek to regain a title they won in 2014. With thirteen of the team that started last year's semi final defeat Burren have an experienced side that belies their tender years, they play as a team who are well aware of each others strengths and weaknesses and are extremely accurate in front of the posts. However it can be argued that they have not really been put to the pin of their collar so far in this years tournament and Clan Na Gael will bring a level of tenacity they have not yet faced, it is how Burren react to this that will determine the destination of the Cuchulainn trophy. It promises to be a high scoring encounter, Clan Na Gael will fight to the bitter end but the extra scoring power may just give Burren the edge.  For those that cannot make the game, it will be streamed live via the 'Spirit Of Paul McGirr' Facebook page, coverage will start from 1:45. All proceeds from the game go to the Spirit Of Paul McGirr Foundation for their work with under privileged and less able bodied children in Lusaka, Zambia.

A hard day's work for our lads but every one of them did the club proud. That is a special Burren side.

Just a note to say what a great tournament ran by Dromore. They put on a quare spread for everyone on a very cold day. Brilliant stuff.

Cheers Lurganblue, we don't like to send anyone home hungry. That is a special Burren team, perhaps the best team we have ever had in the tournament and that includes the great Glen team that cleared up at minor and u21 level in Ulster. Your lads done themselves proud as did your support, some very good footballers in that team, especially young Callum O'Neill, one to look out for

Anyone know if this will be continued as an Ulster u15 comp?

Was a brilliant tournament.

It would be more likely to continue as the U17 competition as this is what it originally was before the Ulster Council requested it to move to U16. There are no tournaments this year but it's likely to resume next year if the Ulster Council can find room in the revised calendar for it. The charity has suffered greatly with covid so the re-start is badly needed

How will that fit in with St Paul's tournament? It was the "Ulster Minor" competition.

Also assume Creggan keen to get the U20 grade one going again. (moving from U21)

Dromintee beat Errigal Ciaran fairly convincingly today in the final. Watched the 2nd half on Facebook, 3.6 to 0.5 or so. Lot of expectation on this Dromintee side. They'll hardly do a Glen but the St Paul's Tournament will obviously be coming into focus next year

Very good Dromintee side, really well set up and great discipline in the tackle, deserving winners, apart fairly strong next year too
