General discussion / Re: 2008 Ryder Cup
September 21, 2008, 08:55:29 PM
Karlsson gave us a good point back there and Casey all swuare going into 17. It seems Europe are rallying towards the end of the day and an exciting finish is on the cards... what has been the sporting highlight of the weekend? Tyrone's 3rd All Ireland of the Decade? The Ryder Cup? Or Ola Jordan in Strictly come dancing?!!

Liam Hayes is a gobshite. Good player he was yes but he continues to write sensationalist drivel that just isn't true every week. He tried management too and was shite so I think after that debacle this morning the Tribune might want to rethink who their resident 'expert' is for next season!

Unreal game I though nip and tuck the whole way through and I like most thought things were ominous after the first 15 mins but Tyrone held fith with their system and it worked for them in the end.

Pat O'Shea got taught a lesson in tactics today. Gooch roasted his man for the first 15 minutes and then they persisted with the aimless high ball that wasn't working... why? Also it was plainly obvious that Tom O'Sullivan is having a nightmare of a season and how he could be left on Cavanagh for the entire game is completely beyond me!

Also Kerry's 2 WHF's Sheehan and Brosnan were anonymous and it was Davy Harte and Jordan who set this game up for Tyrone. I wonder how many times they got their hands on the ball?

Having said that Kerry did have some good performers. O'Sullivan, Gooch, Dara and Marc O'Se were all good but the rest were not up to scratch at all.

Tyrone also had their fair share of poor performers but to me their system and hunger won the day for them. With 4 minutes left they weathered the missed goal chance and then flooded the midfield with players and lads put their bodies on the line to win a serious amount of break ball which eventually led to their decisive scores.

McConnell, Dooher, McMenamin, the 2 McMahons, Harte, Jordan and Cavanagh all had great games while I thought McGinley whilst not being spectacular he broke a load of ball and did a lot of good work.

All in all I thought it a thoroughly enjoyable game of football between 2 excellent teams and I have no doubt both will probably be back in the near future. These 2 teams are the benchmark of this decade and in fairness no one has come close to either of them and it's up to everyone to get their houses in order to try and challenge the duopoly these 2 teams have created!!!

Looks like the Glen are in the final after spanking Clonduff. I'd say them and Gall's probably in the final will be a cracking game. I'd also fancy Glenullin to win it!

Anybody head to anything at this? I went to Maxwell and Murphy on the Sunday night. Having seen Murphy loads of times at the Empire he was pretty crap this time but Maxwell was absolutely hilarious. THe man is a total space cadet but full of great stories. He especially enjoyed the night before when he did a gig in Strabane and said it was the most mental place he'd ever been. Apparently he is now a "fuckin' Moonboot". Great night's craic all the same!

It's a legitamite point and an article written in the beloved Dubs Indo... the first to jump on the Dubs bandwagon and the first to jump off. Do you think the fact that Dublin players play a very small number of games for their home clubs has a bearing on their mentality and how they play for the county team? I sure think it does!

Totally agree with what Duggan is saying. When I played for Ballyboden there were 3 County men and I could safely say only one of them cared about the club at all!!! I would even go so far as to say that there was a stage when one of the lads was sent back by Caffrey to play a few games to get his fitness back he nearly considered it an insult!

Unless you have a healthy appreciation for your club I think it's difficult for you to achieve what Dublin are trying to. Especially with all the media and supporter hype that surrounds the team the club is where your feet can be planted back on the ground and your friends can slag you and take you down a peg or two and remind you of who you really are.Dublin are sadly lacking that at the minute and it's something they will need to embrace if they want to do well!

GAA Discussion / Re: Most naturally talented
September 18, 2008, 10:17:01 AM
Yeah it's a pity that none of them can string 2 decent games together for the Senior Team.

Natural Talent well there are a few. I remember when I was really young watching Eamon Burns and James McCartan in a McRory final that was awesome one year. Paul McFlynn also played McRory football for St. Mary's and was always a naturally intelligent and class footballer. Gerard Cassidy also another who never quite fulfilled his promise from his younger days. Martin Clarke can also be included although I don't think we will see him in a Down jersey again.

In terms of players who are household names well you'd have to say Canavan, Gooch, Maurice Fitz, Declan Browne, Geraghty, McHugh, Tohill ( :( as much as I hate him he was a class footballer).

My favourite statement from an All Ireland Final was Offaly hurling in 1998. I think he came up and said "We might have come through the back door... but we're walking out the front today!". A good bit of humour amongst all the dour and droll speeches and thank yous that are normally heard. I agree with SS2  :o time to get rid of the speeches. Do any other sports have the speeches anymore?

I love this shite that you if you post a negative comment about someone's ability, it is because you don't like him.

He has the same position as Pat O'Shea who is the current Kerry manager who also sought the same permission and was granted it.

I highly doubt that Scullion is involved in too many Senior County Setups... managers would maybe get him in an odd time for a talk or something but every county has their own coaches of a high level without relying on TOny Scullion. This would not be the issue preventing him from taking the Derry post!

I would keep a serious eye out for Bellaghy... some good 7s players in that team and a few were involved the last time they won it. Fergal Doherty, Joe Diver, Gareth Doherty, Kevin Doherty, Mickey McGoldrick, Gavin Diamond, Louis McPeake, Eoghan Brown would all be good at this game and if I'm not mistaken I think it's the same management team that were in charge the last time they won it!

yes you are mistaken.....the management team had nothing to do with the last win. Apart from picking the 7 to play, management has very little to do with 7s football. Its not very tatical. You go and play

No tactics in 7s?! Are you mad! There are plenty of tactics involved and Bellaghy know them all! I remember the first night of the inaugural 7s tournament in Glen, the organisers hadn't the interchange sorted out properly and once Bellaghy conceded a score 2 defenders would sprint off the pitch at the bottom end and 2 men would run out at the top of the pitch which ended in Bellaghy tanking everyone.

As well as that you can't have Danny Quinn as keeper in a 7s competition and have him win player of the tournament without having tactics worked out beforehand! Fergal Doc was keeper at the 7s last time you won (with a ridiculous bleached blonde noggin... not your best idea Doc;)) and he did likewise... how naieve of you to think there are no tactics in 7s. Oh and I'd keep an eye on saffron sam taking you to the cleaners on the Derry managers thread  :P :P

GAA Discussion / Re: Blood Sub Query - Club championship
September 11, 2008, 09:26:59 AM
It depends what the rules are for your particular Club Championship... Derry has closed off a lot of avenues for a lot of teams!

From Derrygaa.ie

Players NOT eligible to play are as follows:
Any of the 12 named players given to C.C.C. by clubs.
Any player who has started in any of the 3 championship games already played.
Any player including blood subs who take part in the quarter final stages of the senior / Intermediate championship.
