Quote from: Manning18 on April 20, 2024, 06:39:32 PM"Get out of jail card" and daylight robbery that I keep seeing being mentioned everywhere suggests luck on Galway's side, not really having that. An absolutely dire performance yes. A great performance by Sligo, absolutely. Their conversion rate was superb

But everything seemed to go against Galway, from the point awarded to Sligo that was 4 foot wide, to some of the first half ref decisions and the 5 missed goal chances obviously. If even one of those chances goes in it's a very different game. Not that it means it's in anyway acceptable to be going into injury time a point behind a D3 side but it does explain a bit of how they got there

Agree with the above on O'Conghaile and McCabe. Like I get they're young but still it's completely inexcusable from management. O'Conghaile hasn't done a single positive thing since R1 of the league and McCabe couldn't even make the u20 side last year. Cunningham and o'Currain have done significantly more than either. You could play O'Flaherty in the forwards either who's in excellent form

Conroy very poor today also, gave away at least 3 passes resulting in a couple of Sligo scores. John Daly could be in major danger of being dropped. Very skillful on the ball and good at picking passes going forwards, but now very incapable of holding the HB line and keeping attacking lines on the outside. HB line in general too porous (as usual) today. This is the first and biggest problem to be addressed.

Conroy made so many silly kick passes into the corner straight to Sligo, it was ridiculous. John Daly has always been one of the first names on the team sheet but he's had a couple of stinkers now, Sean Fitz also isn't able for the fast ground. I think we need Sean Kelly back at no 3. Rob Finnerty in fairness to him stood up yesterday, apart from that the rest weren't at the races. I think we need Molloy back in the team from the start too, he brings energy around the middle that we don't seem to have at the minute.

Killererin and An Cheathru Rua relegated to junior football in Galway. An Cheathru Rua only relegated from senior last year but lost a lot of lads this year and made the drop to junior after a disappointing intermediate championship. Sad state of affairs for both clubs, long senior football history there. Killererins last senior title was in 2010, a lifetime ago now!

Per Raidio na Gaeltachta McHugh #5 and Comer *14 will not line out for Galway and due to an administrative c*ck up cannot be added to the subs.

Of all the stupid mistakes Galway made today, this had to top the lot. It's going to be Galway Mayo in Salthill next weekend, isn't it! We can't get Tyrone but what's the story with Roscommon? We've played them in Connacht championship but does that matter?

Gallagher gone-attitude was not what was expected by management according to rumours, Ryan Monaghan from Oughterard gone too, I think I saw he's gone to America for the summer and Nathan Grainger from Claregalway was a 3rd one I heard that just stepped away.

Rian O'Neill's appeal against his red card is taking place this evening.

That's not what I understand

That's what was reported on local radio here in Galway today and numerous other news outlets.

From the BBC:

Armagh will on Tuesday evening attempt to overturn Rian O'Neill's one-match ban for his red card in the All-Ireland SFC contest against Tyrone.

As it stands, O'Neill must serve a one-match suspension which will rule him out of Sunday's crucial concluding Group Two game against Galway.

However O'Neill is contesting the red card and that will be adjudicated on by the GAA's Central Hearings Committee.

O'Neill was sent off in the first half in Omagh by referee Martin McNally.

The Crossmaglen man's knee appeared to make contact with the head of Cormac Quinn but manager Kieran McGeeney said after the game that O'Neill insisted the Tyrone half-back had "pulled him down by the jersey".

Armagh go into Sunday's final series of round-robin games in third spot in Group Two and on course to at least earn a preliminary quarter-finals spot.

However if McGeeney's side were to lose in Carrick-on-Shannon against the table toppers and Westmeath shock Tyrone at Kingspan Breffni, it could see the Orchard men exiting the All-Ireland Championship on scoring difference.

Tyrone and Armagh both have a current score difference of -1 with Westmeath on -9.

The championship meeting between Galway and Armagh last summer saw the sides fight out an epic All-Ireland quarter-final which included a mass brawl at full-time in normal time before the Tribesmen clinched victory in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Both counties have requested the match be moved to croke park

Galway made no request to change the venue according to Galway Bay FM, statement sent into them by the county board.

Two changes for Galway, Gleeson back in goal and McDaid starts instead of Cathal Sweeney. Power really hard done by, he might not have been brilliant against Roscommon but he was steady. He didn't deserve to be dropped after one game.
I wouldn't be so sure he's been dropped per se.
It almost looks like they are going to give both lads games.
Very strange to be almost rotating your keeper in the championship.
I mean Power didn't get a minute until the last League group game against Kerry.
It's just all a bit strange

Power has played 2 games and he's been replaced for the next game both times. It makes no sense and can't be doing much for his confidence in fairness.

Disappointing performance from a Galway viewpoint, as others have said we can talk about the ref and the soft frees given at one end and not at the other but at the end of the day we didn't take so many scoring chances that were presented, we missed 4 placed balls and had 3 goal chances which could have been easy points in the second half, another day Shane gets all 4 of those points and at least one of those goals goes in. We got what we wanted out of the league I think, Johnny McGrath is a real option in the backs, Cian Hernon has a bit to go yet I think and John Maher has really stepped up since he got his chance. Kick outs/goalkeeping are still a major weakness though, even yesterday when mayo were giving us the short kick out Gleeson is dribbling ball along the ground to the backs putting them under immediate pressure, he looks in a panic every time he goes for a kick out. He mad a great save in fairness to him but the kick outs are a huge worry going into championship. I really think Power is a better option for that alone even though he's had his bad days too.

i expect a couple of changes to galway there. goalkeeper anyway will be swapped.

Doubt it, PJ has been quoted many times since the Kerry game saying the Gleeson is his number 1 goalie and basically gave Power a run out in case he was needed if Gleeson was injured. Very disrespectful towards Power I thought.

Gleeson back in goal, expect plenty of high balls in and extreme pressure on the keeper then.  ::)

In Galway there is a top 4

25  Tuam Shtars
21 Corofin
20 St Grellans Ballinasloe
15 Dunmore McHales

Dunmore, Tuam and St Grellans would have provided most of the All Ireland winners pre 1998. Tuam, Dunmore and Corofin are in north Galway.

St Grellans last county title was in 1980. Tuam's last win was in 1994.
Dunmore's was in 1983. Dunmore would be associated with the Donnellans who have 3 generations of all Ireland medals

Corofin emerged as a force in 1998 when they won the club all Ireland. Since then they have won around 15 county titles.

I'd argue that Corofin began to emerge as a force within Galway from the early 90s, after 98 they started to make a name for themselves on the provincial circuit.

Population only does a certain amount for a club in my opinion, of course it helps but if you look at the likes of Salthill Knocknacarra, they've always had the numbers but never the domination expected. The same will be true of Claregalway I think, they have huge underage success the last while but it remains to be seen if they turn it into senior success. Oranmore is another area where the population has exploded recently, they're making good strides with their minors this year in both hurling and football.  Moycullen are in the spotlight at the moment, much like Corofin of the last few years they have a core group of excellent footballers in the Kellys, Peter Cooke, David Wynne  etc but their location has also helped along with the coaching connections that they have. It's well documented that Don Connellan coaxed Owen Gallagher to join the club, Tom Clarke and Niall Walsh are also outsiders that have joined in recent years. They are a progressive club though, they have the right people in charge, Paul Clancy seems to be an excellent chairman and their underage is going really well. Population certainly helps but you need the structures and right people running the show. Tuam Stars have a huge population base, there's schools in every corner of the town but in my opinion anyway they're not making the most out of it.

Westport beat Ballina.
Maigh Cuilinn do 2 in a row in Galway.

No they didn't, Mountbellew Moylough won it last year, Moycullen won it in 2020. Nice to see them win it in front of a crowd today and have a proper homecoming.

Gleeson in goal seriously weakens that team, his kick outs aren't great at the best of times without the pressure Mayo are going to put on him. Don't think his full back line fully trust him either. Delighted to see Molloy moved out of the corner, wing back is his best position. Niall Daly is a surprise, McDaid obviously still injured but good to see McHugh back in. No Paul Kelly either which is surprising.
