2 announcements last night, one expected, one maybe a little surprising. In Offaly Brian Whelehan is not going for a third year, which is pretty much as we expected/hoped. Brian Whelehan is a hero in Offaly, and is loved for what he did for Offaly hurling, but his reign as senior manager was not as he would have wanted. I felt sorry for him in post match interviews, he looked a broken man, so I'm happy he's stepped down. We can, and will, remember what he did for Offaly as a player, and that he took a job he didn;t really even want as a manager to try and do a job for the county, but it didn't work out. There's bigger issues than who is wearing the Bainisteoir's bib.

The other announcement surprised me a little, but Davy Fitz is staying on with Clare. I thought he looked like some of the players weren't enamoured with him, and the vibe wasn't great. It will be interesting to see how they handle another year with him...

The county board is saying that Davy is staying another year but has Davy said the same ?.

Too much too soon for Clare ?.

AZOffaly

Davy's dad is still secretary of the County Board I think, so it's unlikely they'd say he was staying if he wasn't.

Nice post about Brian Whelehan, definately more issues going on than just a manager...
Davy is too stubborn to step down! Whether its the right call or not i dont know, they're still a young team.

Kerry manager has stepped down. That's a pity after how he's brought them on.

Offaly's a bit handier from North Tipp?

I'd say Westmeath might have a new minor manager next year!

Jez,
the Grevilles are up for a fight, on and off the field.

Surely he'd have known before now whether they were entered into AI B championship as we knew we were in way back in May. The jersey thing is probably a throw away comment from some numpty irked that the lads swapped jerseys with their Dublin counterparts in the Leinster championship.

Westmeath county board have a track record in giving out about lads swapping jerseys and doing silly things, when it comes to hurling

they are also probably reeling from the fact their senior footballers have won a few games this year and so they are costing more than they normally would

On the jerseys, the players were told 'if they had pride in their county' to put the jerseys back into the kit back. They were owed two months of mileage at the time and decided they would make sure they got something for their troubles. Not a hurling specific problem either, the U21 footballers helped themselves to the jerseys a couple of years ago when the promised training gear failed to materalise. And players keeping jerseys was also an issue after the senior footballers lost to Cavan last year too.

Croke Park have since come out and said they were removed from the B competition once they made the Leinster semi-final. Communication would not be a strong point of some of our underage committee members, one in particular. We do excel in clarification statements after the fact though.  ::)

are things usually referred to the CCCC and swept under the carpet to avoid further debate or embarrassment?

New departure alright. They managed to make liars out of themselves this time though.

According to Croke Park fixtures administrator Bernard Smith that when Westmeath qualified for the semi-final of the Leinster MHC with an historic win over Wexford on March 28, fixtures officials at Headquarters deemed the Lake County ineligible for the Minor 'B'. He said that earlier in the year, Westmeath were "provisionally" fixed to play Donegal in the quarter-finals of the Minor 'B'.

From the statement the County Committee released:

"To that extent, Westmeath GAA did not enter a Minor team in this year's B Championship and this matter was discussed thoroughly through County Management Committee and the decision communicated accordingly."

"Hence the question of us pulling out of a Championship that we did not enter is disingenuous and we are very disappointed with the manner in which this has arisen in the media through twitter today."

It's great to see them tripping up in their own media statements

Usually they contradict themselves in the one meeting!
