I am seriously thinking of running the marathon but wonder if i have left the training too late.At present i run 6 miles 3 times a week, is this enough base to work on for an end of october marathon.I am not a racer, to finish in less than 4 hours would be nice for me, any views or answers greatly appreciated.

If you are running already then you should be fine - I have signed up for the marathon but haven't been able to start training due to an injury but my plan was to start early July and build to the race then - shortish runs through the week (up to 8miles) then a long run on the weekend.

Plan was something like this;

3 months training will be fine for you. Am doing this myself, running about 16miles a week at the moment. Going to build it up slow . Wouldnt set a time target for a first marathon though. one could get awful depressed half way around knowing you are not going to beat it and eventually quit. Finish it and finish it running is my target. Major problem I have at the moment is I find it alot easier to run in the evenings than mornings. Marathon is a morning job and im not going to get much oppourtunity to run mornings from now on. 10 miler in P Park next month and half marathon there in Sept. Will do these also. Very Good prep. Have got a decent training guide here http://www.runnersworld.com
