GAA Discussion / Re: GAA Apathy and Attendances

Quoteunlike the league the championship starts with a wimper and ends with a bang and i bet at the end of the season the crowds will have been great.

Of course the attendances (as we move through the summer) will increase as alot of the dead wood will be out of the Championship and we will be moving towards the games that count

Fenlon quits as Derry City boss

Pat Felon has resigned as manager of Eircom Premier Division club Derry City after just five months in the job.
The former Shelbourne boss, who took over from Stephen Kenny at the Brandywell, has yet to announce the reasons for his decision.

Derry have struggled at the start of their first season under Fenlon and the Candystripes lie fifth in the league, 11 points behind leaders St Pat's.

City could only manage a draw with basement club Longford on Saturday.

Heard that report this morning on the radio. Its unbelievable to think that any decent chairman would decide to give that man a job.  However, at least Robson had the good sense to bring in someone like Kidd, that actually knows a bit about coaching teams.

Of course, marking can't dynamically change, and you never come close to another player, how stupid of me!

Sorry, for not making my point clearly. It was obvious that part of Derry's game plan that day was for Hinphey to follow Cavanagh where ever he went! So, I find it very strange for someone to say that Hinphey was persistently at Hughes, before he got sent off

Were you even at that game? Long before Hughes eventually reacted I thought that Hinphey was hell-bent on winding him up to breaking-point – he missed no possible opportunity, and given that both he and Hughes were operating primarily in the same third of the pitch that's hardly surprising, is it (regardless of whom he was 'marking')?  Hence the persistence!

I was indeed at the game. Had a decent enough view of the punch.  Never really seen Hinphey at Hughes, but he was definitely torturing Cavanagh.

QuoteAs someone with a great eye for detail, especially when it comes to Derry and Tyrone matches, it is interesting that he never referred at any stage to one glaring example of the 'Dying Swan' routine in the 2001 All-Ireland SFC Quarter-Final at Clones involving a now retired Derry player. The player in question fell like a sack of spuds and lay sprawled on the ground for a few minutes following a tussle with Tyrone's Peter Canavan. The referee had been duped, Canavan was shown a red card and the Derry player was soon back on his feet again showing no ill effects from the challenge!

Interesting to say that he duped the referee! The incident (a punch to the gut) happened right in front of the linesman. The referee (Pat McEnaney), didn't get a clear view and had to consult with the linesman, before sending him off.

Lads, the fact is, you'll all still tune in the the Sunday Game this week, to see what the two gimps have to say! I don't think anyone here will change the channel when the analysising is going on!

Brolly has succeeded in what he set out to do - He's got you talking about him and not the game!

I agree with Ziggy regarding the title of this thread, the emphasis should be put on this comment:

QuoteThe 'Dying Swan' routine can be witnessed at every level, from underage to senior, from school to club to county. The problem is so widespread that it must be assumed that players of all ages are being encouraged to do it by their mentors.

I'm sure everyone here could pinpoint a few culprits in their own club, that go to ground to easy.  But the fact is, many people don't condemn their own players for diving, the condemnation comes when they feel sinned against.
