The 1 or 9 is what you would see on the grid (regardless of the underlying electronics).

But the whole thing is too confusing for me.

Appranetly it is possible to purchase a £10 pixel.

Now what is the difference between the £5 and £10 pixel.

I think that the £10 pixel just means two individual pixels, which will appear as one -- they might have been better to clarify with something like "... the smallest £5 pixels can be combined to create bigger pixels (effectively)".
