RIP Shane. Musical genius. Met him once in Queens SU toilets circa Oct 1994. Was playing in the Mandela Hall and he was hanging over the urinal in a heap. I says to him,  'great show are you alright?'  He told me to go and fcuk off. So I did....legend!

Itchy

Rip Shane McGowan. Some day students will study his words in leaving cert English.

RIP Shane.

Not too many agree but I've always thought Rain Street was their best tune

From the Bunker

Shane McGowan - The word legend gets bandied about a fair bit, but in this case it is totally justified. And it's not because he wrote one of the greatest Christmas songs ever.

Seen The Pogues in 1987. Prime Pogues in between The Rum the Sodomy and the lash (Poguerty in Motion EP) and Fall from the grace with God Albums. Shane was in his prime then. Although The success of The Pogues fall mostly on Shane, he had a fine collection of co-conspirators in Terry Woods (Sweeney's Men), Jim Fearney, Phil Chevron (formerly of The Radiators), Spider Stacy and Jem Finer.

Seen Shane in various guises over the years - the good, the bad and the ugly. But to be fair only once did he really disappoint - Feile '91.

Such a pity he was a hostage to his vices. But wasn't it great that we got to get to see him at his best at one stage.

Shane made tradition music cool, raw and fun.

RIP

Sorry to derail from the great man himself but we have another

Cliffs mam from Cheers 😐

What a day. Worst day ever

Captain Obvious

Poor old Shane, in bad health for the last number of years and his caring wife probably extended his life further than expected.

I like the Pogues. But half an hour / half an album at a time is plenty. There's something about their sound just takes too much out of you to enjoy over a longer spell.

Half an hour of then at their finest can be 10 absolute bangers of poetic imagery though.

RIP Shane.  Thanks to a mutual friend, I had the experience of travelling to a Pogues gig once in the van with Shane, an experience indeed.

He was a lyrical genius, and we won't see his likes again in our time anyway.

Tony Baloney

Was listening to the news in the car on the way home from work and tributes were coming in from George W Bush, Tony Blair, Putin and the Chinese Govt.

Fairytale of New York just one of those songs that even warlord national leaders enjoy.
