GAA Discussion / Re: Facebook Draws / Competitions
January 30, 2023, 02:14:34 PM
I enter the ones on aspirecomps.co.uk from time to time as they list stuff I'd like to win

I know 100% for a fact that one of the sites already mentioned by 2 posters above has raffled machinery that was subject to vat fraud

Some chance they open that railway.
The A5 should be built but because it really benefits a load of Nationalists it's being held up by a small minority of Protestant farmers. This is the bottom line. People now criticising Action for A5 because it comes from within the GAA community need to have a word with themselves.
Action for the A5 was the previous group
Not criticizing "Enough is Enough", but agreeing with Hereiam

With the involvement of the Tyrone GAA in this issue now it will harden the unionist side more than ever against it.
This scheme was dead in the water as soon as it was announced. Political sabotage at its best by the unionists.
Fair play to those who are trying to do something

Will it ever be built? What do we think?

From http://www.wesleyjohnston.com/roads/a5omaghstrabane.html
The full A5 is now estimated at £1.609 billion.
The original estimate for the A5 was £844m as of 2009 when the Irish government committed to funding £400m
The Irish government contribution has been partly paid (£200m £75 up to 2022) but has not increased.
This means that the amount that Northern Ireland needs to spend has increased from £444m to £1209m, a tripling of the cost.

Irrespective of planning, I can't see it being built now due to the cost
Wesley has suggested alternatives on the above link to do something rather than nothing

Yep.
I don't want to criticse people who've decided to try and do something rather than do nothing, but there was a previous group "Action for the A5", that certainly had strong GAA links, who tried to lobby for its construction without making it an Orange V Green thing
This campaign using the Tyrone GAA red hand in the logo & launched in Garvaghy comes across very much as an "Ourselves alone" kind of thing

Would have been better using the existing logo & holding the launch events in public halls etc, still strongly backed by Tyrone GAA of course, but not run by them. They need to get everyone on board

Paisley Snr referred to it as the "United Ireland Freeway" iirc.
Slogans like that would put some people against it, even if they lived along the route & the new road would benefit them

Given that it was nicely split into 3 separate sections for tender etc, it was pretty disappointing that a planning issue on one section prevented the other 2 from going ahead,

There was a time when I was sure it would.
Now I think planning will be passed, but the budget will be an issue..

General discussion / Re: Irelands greatest deli counter

Centra leads, the rest follow
Martin's Centra out at fortwilliam docks in belfast was a good one, followed by Centra Malone road, Botanic Avenue etc

Personally the six counties deli-counters are far superior to the free state. Some counters are excellent while others are crap. Any tips for a man who travels a lot on the best delis or ones to avoid. The Milestone in Rathfriland is the best I have ever been too IMO.

This is a fair point and one that needs to be considered in any future UI discussions. We'll only give up our public sector if there's a commitment from the south to up the stakes in the deli department!!

There was a book review on Today FM the other day reviewing a book about Breakfasts in Ireland - the reviewer was championing how much better a breakfast was up north because it included Soda bread, potato bread & beans - totally agree

While it was ridiculous for the ulster council to agree the 3 games in a week scenario, it's hard to argue it when not only did you have a club person as the County Rep voting on it, but they were also a member of the management team!
It seems the real c**k up here lies with the "Derry Vice-Chairperson, who is a member of Steelstown management"

Did he/she not inform their team of the backup scenario? or did everyone in the management team fail to say "by the way girls, that means you can't wear steel studs if we end up playing on the back pitch"

Picking up the standard Derry City "we're so hard done by" vibe from all of this

Perhaps there's a better thread....however....

Anyone any useful recommendations to prevent condensation gathering on the inside of windows at this time of the year....

Just a problem in the winter mornings....
I've the same problem
Apparently the solution is to install a Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) fan to remove humidity from the air
I had a guy supposed to come over the summer to put one in but never did, thinking of doing it myself

Some people run dehumidifiers in the house if drying washing indoors

To lose the head after 30 seconds is a serious problem. How do you get wound up that quickly?
You would wonder is there history between the two of them and was it pre-planned as he didn't look anyway agitated walking onto the field.

Seen on twitter, so could be balls, that the guy's son got sent off in the first half
If true, and with the way he calmly walked on -did whatever he did - and returned to his spot,
It might be fair to say it was a premeditated, not a spur of the moment thing - the challenge & free in the video certainly don't seem to be enough to react like that!

will the energy crises have an effect on clubs
Noticed last time at Fintona they have a generator running their lights (rather than running from the grid or as backup?)
They'd probably be able to give a figure (in litres of Diesel) of what it costs to run the lights when they host a championship game

Crazy idea this. They'll fit pay as you go meters in all houses and turn normal people into criminals
Sure I thought all the people with PAYG meters were criminals.....

Any word of an online season ticket for the streams?

This would sell a lot if reasonably priced!
although the cost of a price of bread has gone up so it'll probably be £250 ;)

Have had need to contact them before when I lost a passport and needed a new one to travel the following week & found them very responsive on twitter.
They told me to come to their office in Balbriggan & they printed it while I had a coffee across the road. Pre Coivd times

What should be put on a club's social media?

Personally, I think that it should be used to advertise matches and events, match reports and photos, death notices.

Some clubs go way over the top and congratulate people on finishing their dinner. Get wee soon to wee Mary down the road.

BTW the death notices should be for immediate members, not a death notice every day.

I've an issue with this one; I've found out on the club facebook of relatives dying
Its like a race to get broadcasting the news asap, that they don't allow time for people in other time zones to be informed

I am in the final throes of a new build, during which I installed CAT6 cabling throughout the house - do I plug a router into each socket where I wish to have wifi (obviously I can use the hard connection in certain circumstances)...I hadn't thought that far ahead.

If I were doing it, I'd only have CAT6 going from Smart TVs back to the router & then maybe a Network Hard drive back at the router so you can access media on it from all the TVs.
Building a nice new tidy house, and then having WI-FI extenders plugged into power sockets, patched into CAT6 points doesn't make sense to me. I'd use sockets with built in WI-FI extenders
Any other smart devices you're likely to have will have built in WI-FI and have no advantage of being connected to ethernet

EDIT: exception being gaming computers - so 1 CAT6 for the computer & 1 for the Smart TV

Has anyone any experience of Fibrus yet? They are due to upgrade my area shortly. I'm joining a Hyperfast NI update event via teams this evening, anything I should look out for? Currently I have approx 17mbps download speed and 1mbps upload.

I've signed up, not installed yet - £24.99 for 300MB is better than I'm currently paying for 17MB
Have a site visit from them on Sunday morning

On thre topic of Wi-Fi boosters - I see they can provide one for £5per month! I don't know why you'd pay that rather than just buy one

Donaghmore thirds? Is that a thing?

Won't be a thing for too long. A serious commitment from a club of that size to keep a creditable 3rds team going - fair play for trying but I feel it will be too much for them
I think it is a good move, maybe a year too soon. They have serious numbers coming through and Ned to keep them involved.
If you have 2 minor teams (38+players) and only. 2-3 make Senior in the following year you lose a lot of late developers, especially as it is now u17.

Great move and great to see, ambitious and keeps lads of all ages and abilities playing longer, you're a long time retired. Really great way to target late developers too. If Adrian Cush togs out I'll happily pay at the gate!
I'm not so sure.. we experimented with a thirds team for a year or 2 and I would say most people in the club have mixed feelings about it. It kept older boys who weren't fit for senior or reserve football out and at it and younger boys just coming out of minor a bit of game time. I think unless you can keep men motivated and playing a considerably decent level it eventually falls through and numbers start dwindling away as your good young players are taken into senior and reserve panels. Fair play to donaghmore for the ambition but I'd give it 2 years max

Have said it before on this board; there is demand for a social league in Tyrone.

A thirds team as you have described, competing in a Division 3 league from April to December with breaks for county football etc will run out of steam.
A 6-8 week league in the best months of the year with games on a week night would suit a lot of guys who don't play at all any more
