Very interesting for the usual suspects. Italy didn't even make it. Germany are out. Argentina are poor. Brazil are underwhelming.
It's a great opportunity for a second rank team to win the tournament .

If Belgium really are 'it' they will never have a better chance.

The Tier-1 teams appear to have forgotten how to defend, and the Tier-2 teams appear to have forgotten how to attack.  Of them all, so far, only Brazil look like they can go through the gears ... sadly.

Brazil look to be slowly getting into gear...very slowly admittedly.

Which team is Leicester and which is Tottenham ? I think Belgium have a few Spurs players

England may be Leicester. (Gulp)

I've been impressed with Croatia, Uruguay (although I get the feeling this is the wrong tournament for the dour, solid team winning 1-0), Belgium
I've been noting the potential to kick on, but haven't been overly impressive so far, of Brazil, Spain & France
The 'could make a run' teams for me are Portugal, Mexico, Columbia, Switzerland and England, teams which I didn't think had any chance, but with a fair wind have shown they have more than we thought.
Teams I can't see troubling us much more are Sweden, Russia, Denmark, Argentina and Japan/Senegal.

Apparently 4 of the last 5 winners have gone out in the group stages 4 years later

That sounds right.

Germany this time around.
Spain were brutal in Brazil.
France imploded in South Africa with the bus strike and all.

I can remember what Italy did in 2010. I don't think Brazil went out early in 2006 though. Maybe it's the last 4 in a row?

Four of the last five winners haven't got past the group stage at the next tournament:

France won in 1998, finished bottom of their group in 2002
Brazil won in 2002, went to the quarters in 2006
Italy won in 2006, finished bottom of their group in 2010
Spain won in 2010, finished third in their group in 2014
Germany won in 2014, finished bottom of their group in 2018

Looking forward to the Rissia - Spain game.  Putin's sour puss if Spain win.

Since there seems to be confusion as to the tie-breaking rules, here is how it works:

TIEBREAKERS

If two or more teams are level on points, they are separated using this tiebreaker system

1. Goal difference
2. Goals scored
3. Head-to-head points
4. Head-to-head goal difference
5. Head-to-head goals scored
6. Fair play points
7. Drawing of lots

FAIR PLAY SCORING SYSTEM

Yellow card: -1
Red card for two cautions: -3
Straight red card: -4
Yellow card and straight red card: -5
It's down to 6 and 7 if England and Belgium draw tonight yes?

you're right, I was mixing up France 2002 with France 2010. It was Italy that shat the eggs in 2010.

I wonder is it a lack of going through the rigors of a qualifying process that leaves them undercooked.

Holders have to qualify now. Last few tournaments I think? Germany sailed through their group.

Didn't know that.
