Title: Biggest hammerings in club championship
Post by: mrdeeds on August 20, 2018, 11:19:34 AM
We had a result in Cavan Junior Championship this weekend where Mountnugent bet Corlough 10 22 to 1 4. Mountnugent would not be considered one of the favourites so was a shocking scoreline. Any other counties have similar?

Nothing in Longford springs immediately to mind but in the good old days before dinternet and the likes if a club got a solid beating a fake score would be submitted to RTE for the late night scores.

No point in broadcasting to the world that Naomh Slashers had a bad day at the office.

My own club had manys a bad beating in our bad days but the worst was an 8-22 to 0-4 drubbing by Eastern Harps second string in the JFC around 2000 or so. Thankfully we put those days behind us and beat them in the Junior final a couple of years ago.

The time Ballintubber scored 9-11 against us still haunts me. Mind you we scored 2-12.

I remember getting stuffed 8-26 to 0-3 in the Antrim centenary cup competition in hurling in 1984. It was an open draw knock out for all clubs - not such a good idea!

Wait until they play Maghera.

Back in 2016, our second string played a neighbouring club (which shall remain nameless to spare Billy's Boots's blushes) in the Longford Junior Championship. We have a population of 450 so you can imagine that we were scraping the barrel to make up numbers. When the final whistle went we were winning 6-16 to 0-1 and if the whistle had been delayed for another second it would have been 7-16 to 0-1 as the ball was about to cross the opposition goal line. It had been 6-16 to 0-0 until a minute before.

Juniors can sometimes have big scores with small clubs barely keeping afloat but there shouldn't be scorelines that bug in senior!

0-7 to 6-21 in senior game at weekend Tommy in Antrim senior! And in intermediate a team score only 1 point!

Ballygunner handed out a 3 23 to 1 4 hammering to neighbours Passage in county semi final today
They are going for 5 in a row v Abbeyside who are looking for their first ever Waterford title in 2 weeks time. Hopefully it will be a more competitive game.

Are Mount Sion and De LaSalle off the radar in Waterford City hurling circles?

I didn't know Shankill had a club. Cuala would consider that part of their massive catchment area, wouldn't they?

There's a few clubs in that general area, Cabinteely, Geraldine Morans etc., but all are small and inevitably dwarfed by the Dalkey behemoth.

They had a club in the 70's and that didn't last long. A few locals (blow in locals) set up the club again so their kids could play. They are going well at underage level, but your right any decent senior player is with Cuala, hopefully the new generation in Shankill will get going and develop into a competitive adult team.

There'll be some celebrations if they bridge that gap!!   :P

De La Salle were only beaten by a point by Abbeyside in Saturday but Mount Sion were hammered in the quarter finals for the 2nd year in a row and haven't won the county title since 2006.

The record for an All-Ireland club semi final is 18 points, held by UCD, beating Knockmore in 1973 with a team which had 14 county players on it, Knockmore were playing their first ever season as a senior club. Then in 1997 Knockmore beat Eire Og of Carlow 3-14 to 0-5 to equal that record

As Cross Rangers did when beating Drom Broadford 4-12 to 0-06 in 2009.

In the All Ireland club 1982 final stands out Nemo Rangers 6-11  Garrymore 1-8

In 2011, Cross beat both Armagh Harps and Ballymacnab in the Armagh championship by 25 points.
