Big miscalculation by Trump's illegitimate Supreme Court justices in shooting down abortion rights. This is gonna backfire on the conservative ideologues, big time. I don't think the usual midterm Democratic voter apathy is going to be a thing this year, not after this abomination of a ruling.

Hopefully not, but people and the news move on to other things very quickly. (e.g. there'll probably be another Fox News caravan or something to scare the old bigots).

But, this won't end with abortion. If the ruling comes out as written in the draft with it based on unenumerated rights, the likes of gay rights and contraception will be next to fall at the federal level, despite Alito's insistence that it is solely about abortion.

Then its really going to matter which state you and your kids live in.

And if the GOP legislates all of this stuff federally, this country is heading down the road towards a break-up, IMO.

If the "ruling" stands as written, then several Justices flat out lied during their confirmation hearings

Secondly-(I don't know who leaked it) but whoever they are, they have dealt a serious blow to the institution of the Supreme Court.

Thirdly-why can't people just mind their own fvckin business. If you are against abortion, then don't have one. It's a decision made between and woman and her doctor (and God if he/she actually exists)

Agree.

Was the new justice involved in this controversy?
She probably wasn't because she doesn't know what a woman is or is not a biologist  and therefore would not be able to form an opinion on the subject ,See how these idiotic positions should not be tolerated in such important positions and pandering to idiots who pedal them is moronic.

don't like it when the opinions you guys support are exposed as moronic or lies .
Newsom gave a big speech yesterday where he said if men could get pregnant these rulings wouldn't happen , if he was at an event next week and  the crowd was lgbtq he would say of course men can get pregnant and he doesn't know what a woman is . I'm just pointing out how ridiculous they are .

I gave up on this thread cause of his rambling, if this is the every day attitude  of a irish immigrant in America, am quite glad they can keep him.

Whilst you can argue the rights and wrongs of abortion you'd have to admit that from a strictly legal standpoint Roe v Wade was very shaky. To extrapolate that the right to privacy infers a right to have an abortion is quite a substantial leap. Also considering that the right to privacy is an extrapolation in itself. Issues like abortion should not be decided by a small cabal of judges. They should be legislated for at state or federal level and sorted out through the wheels of democracy.

Even RBG said it was a poorly crafted law (and she was the biggest supporter of reproductive rights that you'd ever meet)

On the legal underpinnings of Roe V Wade, it depends who you listen to. I've read convincing arguments on both sides.

As for the judges, lots of issues in American life are and have been decided by judges, for better or worse. The Supreme Court ended segregation in schools, for example, which turbo-charged the overall struggle for civil rights. Had black people been waiting for those state governments and municipalities to legislate segregation out of existence, they would have been waiting a long time.

The courts HAVE gotten too significant, politically, in the US, at all levels. Organizations now pick and choose where and when they bring politically-influenced cases depending on which judges or judges they want ruling on their case (so-called judge shopping). I don't what the way out that is though.

Conservative obstructionism in Washington has made it all but impossible to pass even the most popular of legislation. Big issues are increasingly being decided by the judicial branch in the absence of any action in the legislative branch. The big danger now is that the minority rule in the legislative branch is now spilling over into minority rule in the judicial branch, with illegitimate justices, appointed by a president who lost the popular vote, holding too much sway. Unfortunately we're stuck with the conservative agent, Joe Manchin, in the senate blocking all Democratic attempts to fix the problem, and we're stuck with him for a couple of years.

The overturning of Roe will hopefully snap Democratic voters out of it for the midterms. To lose the House to the Rethuglicans at this stage would be a catastrophe.
