The question I asked was what was the average life expectancy from when a person enters a nursing home. The question is quite clear, there is little ambiguity in it. I went and found out the answer too, linked in the report - its 12 months. You have posted a series of long meandering posts that cover anything but the question asked.

Average = cumulative total divided by number of figures
Life expectancy = how long they will live for
When they go into the nursing home = as it says

Average life expectancy when they go into a nursing home.

I didn't ask for how long or how short they could live for, I asked for the average life expectancy. Maybe try and read more carefully next time.

This type of reply is why you are not respected by anyone on this board, Angelo.

There was an attempt to inform a feature of the discussion with reliable, and clearly relevant information. Most people with a genuine interest in developing the discussion would have taken this in good faith and worked through the figures.

But, as usual, your replies demonstrated no desire to get involved in an actual discussion. All you offered instead was belligerence and dogma.

The bit highlighted above is peak Angelo - you find something, somewhere that chimes along your intractable position and refuse to entertain any appraisal of contradictory information. The most absurd thing is that the source you provided doesn't even say what you claim it says. This is all very Trumpian, very post truth. Do you think it convinces many?

If you must make yourself such an incessant presence throughout this board, at least try to contribute from a position of honesty going forward. You have almost 1000 posts here since the turn of the year - more than 10% of the board output. You set the tone on whole threads here, which now essentially read like your blog. And that tone is nasty, antagonistic, and frustrated.

It seems like some sort of acceptance matters to you on this board, despite your objections. There's little other reason to spend so much time and energy in defence of an online persona. Perhaps a change of approach should be considered, for the health of both the board and yourself.

Yeah, I asked a question and you went and answered one I didn't ask.

I was just clarifying that your answer has zero to do with the question I posed.
Not sure what you think you read, but if you return to it you'll see that I never offered an answer. I offered information from published figures that could be used to inform a best estimate.

Your question cannot be answered definitively because the figures you want are not published, therefore estimations have to be made from available information.

The AVERAGE life expectancy for patients admitted to nursing homes is 12 months according to the report I put up there.
And other reports suggest differently, because the figures are not published and each report is estimating and extrapolating from various disparate sources.

Quote from: Angelo on February 02, 2021, 09:23:45 PMIn the south they are reporting that half of their total deaths are nursing home patients, people who probably have an average life expectancy of 12 months.

And? Regardless of whether the answer to your original question is 12 months or 12 years, where does this train of thought lead?

Thanks for answering a different question than the one I asked.

The question I asked was:

What is the average life expectancy for a person once they enter a nursing home?

This would tend to point to it being 12 months:

https://www.bgs.org.uk/resources/end-of-life-care-in-frailty-care-homes

The average life expectancy in UK care homes is 24 months for care homes without nursing and 12 months for care homes with nursing. This belies a much more complex picture, where some residents enter a home with one or more rapidly deteriorating medical conditions. Many of this group die shortly after admission, while another group of residents live in care homes for much longer. It follows that all care home residents should be considered for end of life care, but it should not be taken for granted that all will need it straight away.

The figures I offered were average life expectancy. For the general population, though, as the ONS does not provide statistics on care home residents. There are various estimates out there on that - here's one that has it at up to 30 months for an 85 year old entering care; here's one that has the average stay at 26 months. Nothing very definitive.

Life expectancy is longer at advanced ages than most realise, and lost years are lost years regardless of when they occur. That's the point. It's not a healthy society that considers the option of sacrificing the elderly and vulnerable so that the rest are not inconvenienced.

50% of Free State deaths in the nursing homes.

Would anyone care to tell me what the life expectancy is for a patient that enters a nursing home? I would suspect quite a sizable amount would be doing well to see a year out in any case.

Not sure about the south but in the UK, a 75 year old can expect to live for another 12-13 years on average. An 85 year old can expect to live for another 6-7 years, again, on average.

Even allowing for nursing home residents being in poorer health than the general population, that's still a lot of years to write off just so that everyone else can get back down to the shops.

Are Phil jones and Chris Smalling still on the books at Utd?

Got shot of Smalling in the last window.

Jones is still there. Half way through a four year contract that he should never have been offered. Has barely featured since signing it. Could have been a great player, but it was clear from about 2014/ 2015 that his body was always going to hold him back. Club officialdom seem to have a soft spot for him - not much other explanation for the millions he's been given over the last five or six years with so little return.

Rojo is another boy that was given a multi-year contract a few years ago and has offered nothing since. Probably also some logic about 'protecting value' with these absurd contract renewals - but that only works if anyone else ever wants to buy the duds.

Jesse (almost) away to West Ham for the rest of the season, I hope it reignites his career for him. He stagnated at United and his off field persona didn't exactly endear him to people but there is a decent enough footballer in there..

Like him or loathe him his goal reel is a joy to watch. Rio Ferdinand said they struggled to work out his best positon at Utd which maybe stunted his development. Good luck to him. I'll add that he hasnt been any worse than Martial.

Maybe the reason there was a struggle to find his best position is that he just wasn't very good in any of them. An ordinary player with an ordinary record, punctuated with one outlier of a season in 17/18 when he briefly looked capable of ascending to the next level.

Very poor call by him and his agent to not look for an exit after it became clear he wasn't wanted last summer. He has not enhanced the value of his next contract with six months of bench warming, and the footballing world is now six months deeper into the COVID financial crisis. Lucky to get this audition at West Ham - wouldn't be a surprise if he fluffs it.

At this pace 80 points will win the league which is really astounding.

Yeah, on track to be the lowest winning total for a decade. 80 points wouldn't even have got you second for most of those years. Good to see, this sort of season is always much more interesting.

Perhaps worth noting (well, worth noting by those with a genuine interest in the discussion) that around 7% of COVID hospital admissions in the north through the pandemic have been from the under 40s cohort.

The death stats would suggest that these individuals usually respond well enough to treatment to allow for eventual discharge, but that 7% is not insignificant. It equates to several hundred people occupying hospital resources at a time when the health service here has effectively ceased to function.

I'd suggest that the continued potential for this cohort to need hospital treatment, and thereby eat into already overstretched resources, is a decent reason to encourage those in the age bracket to take the opportunity of a vaccine when offered.

There are some schools in the north that have creches (for their pupils babies).

Is that what we all want?
So what problem have you with below for any child:

At Mini Model Day Care we aim to;

Ensure the happiness of each child entrusted in our care
Provide a safe, secure and warm environment in which each child will feel loved and cared for.
Develop an understanding of young children's needs
Build and maintain relationships with children in the day care environment
Develop knowledge and understanding of play and the effect on the child's development
Stimulate the all-round development of the child.
Provide children with time and support to experience and develop their own ideas through play.

None whatsoever, but that is treating the symptom not the cause. The cause being underage sex. Why is sex amongst underage so prevalent? Is it lack of sex education? Or is it sex education? Is it because we've made porn so available to everyone? Is it because 11-12 year old girls think its cool to share naked pics of themselves? Is it what is shown on television?

It seems to me that society has moved from one extreme to the other. There is a happy medium, but I'm not sure how to get there.

Teenage pregnancy rates in the north have been falling steadily for 20+ years. Your entire thesis is without foundation.

I haven't posted here for a while but have been checking in from time to time. One observation is Angelotends to repeat the same bull everyday on this thread.

Not just this thread. Every thread unfortunate enough to attract his attention. The tl;dr for anyone without the time to wade through it all:

Angelo: I think x.

AN Other: Why do you think x, considering counter arguments a, b, and c?

Angelo: I think x. Idiot.

AN Other: Yeah, but a, b, and c all suggest that x can't be true. So why do you still think x?

Angelo: I've already answered that. Hypocrite.

AN Other: Where have you answered it, Angelo?

Angelo: It's not my fault you're too lazy to read back, wee man. Flu. Big pharma. January 2018. Nadal.

AN Other: But really Angelo, where have you answered it?

Angelo: Look, I'm not going to let you and your hysterical mob bully me out of my position. But here's where I answered it, coward:

GAA Discussion / Re: Money, Dublin and the GAA
January 05, 2021, 08:42:58 AM
This whole discussion has been very unsatisfactory from the start. And it's unsatisfactory because neither side of the argument seems to really have reliable, comprehensive evidence of what's gone on in Dublin in the last 15 years. So we're left talking through tidbits of financial info gleaned from disparate sources, or through anecdotal experiences and conversations, or about nebulous and antagonistic things like player occupations or car deals. Both sides dismiss or seek to qualify anything put forward by the other. No one comes away any more informed or convinced of anything. It's a load of dung.

It's important to appreciate that this discussion has grown far beyond us internet gobshites, and genuinely threatens to become the most poisonous and divisive issue in GAA circles. We need to given clarity. We need authoritative, detailed figures on the financing of Dublin GAA over the last two decades. What money has gone in; where it has been spent; the justification for the expenditure; and how it compares with other areas of the country. Only with this sort of detail can an informed discussion take place about future funding and structuring of the GAA in Dublin.

It's time for Tom Ryan and others in the GAA hierarchy to show some leadership here and take ownership of the conversation. Failure to do so can only be a result of one or both of the following:
1. There's something to hide. Dublin have been in receipt of disproportionate funding, and no one in GAA officialdom wants to stand over the rationale for this.
2. The GAA hierarchy are out of touch with the grassroots. They do not appreciate just how disaffected and disinterested many across the country have become with the intercounty game, and with the perceived inequalities driving competition into the ground.

Somebody in some position of power has to make an honest effort to put this issue to bed one way or another. Dublin is just going to continue to grow, continue to need funding, and continue to win all around them. The issue is not just going to go away.

Boys on both sides having the exact same argument as was had three months ago.

The exact same points being made about lockdown vs. people's jobs/ mental health/ abuse.

Even that Barrington ball of dung getting another run out.

County: Armagh

Are you happy with 2020 achievement? It was good, bad, and ugly. Often over the course of the same 70 minutes.
What was your minimal aspiration for '20? 1. League promotion. 2. Beat Derry. 3. Be competitive in the Ulster semi-final. Only two of those targets were met.
Are you happy with the direction of your county going into 21? Not really. There's a sense that the end is closing in for the current group. Management have been in place for six years now without achieving much - 2021 must surely be their last hurrah. The team is backboned by fellas in and around the 30 mark, so it's difficult to see scope for improvement there (rumours abound of key men planning to pack it all in). Underage performances for the last decade has been well below par, so there isn't exactly a stellar crop of fresh talent emerging to shake things up. And club football in the county is stale and unproductive. Realistically, the short to medium term prospects for the county side are quite bleak.
What is you minimal aspiration for '21? Staying in Division 1 would be an achievement. Would be nice to find a proper defender or two. Improved performances at underage level.
Where do you position your county 1-33? Anywhere from 7-14 depending on the mood. Might as well be 33 for all it matters at the end of the day.
If Dublin are a 10 out of 10. What number out of 10 would you give your county for 2020? 4.

https://twitter.com/AlastairDonaghy/status/1339586460467355649?s=20

How are cases of school transmission recorded?

Presumably, if a staff member/ pupil picks the thing up in the school that will be recorded as a school transmission.

But when that staff member/ pupil goes home and passes it to the three/ four/ five family members with which they share a house*, how are those cases recorded? I'm guessing those go down in the stats as cases of 'household' transmission.

It's easy to see how the impact of schools could be greatly understated.

*Anecdotal and all, but I'm aware of two separate families in my area where this exact thing has just happened.

Wan Bissaka is United's problem in a nutshell.

They have several excellent players, enough to occasionally pull out impressive results, but the squad depth isn't what it needs to be to develop consistency. And the squad isn't deep enough because too much of the money is wasted on lads that never hit the level like Wan Bissaka.

Wan Bissaka, Lindelof, Shaw, Bailly, Jones, Rojo, Dalot, Martial, Fred, James - all lads still on the books that were signed in the early years of their careers with the expectation that they'd develop into the quality of player United need to be challenging. But almost all have failed to do so.

Is it a scouting failure, and these players never possessed the potential to begin with? Or is it a coaching failure, and these players are not exposed to the quality of coaching that should be standard at a club of United's calibre?

For my money it's a bit of both. United still seem to do youth production quite well, but senior players don't seem to improve much upon joining. This has been going on a for a decade, but it has to be said that Solskjaer's coaching ticket looks particularly sub-standard. Scouting too looks a mess. Woodward gloated that United's extensive network tracked 804 right backs before settling on Wan Bissaka last year. Notwithstanding that this is probably exaggerated bullshit, it does hint at a bloated and ineffective system that isn't working anywhere near as well as systems at most of the club's rivals.

The owners don't spend enough of the money the club generates on playing staff, but they do loosen the purse strings more than is admitted by many. Their bigger failure is perhaps not investing enough in the non-playing staff.
