What has been the best team not to win an AI since 1970?

Galway 1971-74
Roscommon 1977-1980
Mayo 1985/89
Mayo 1996/97
Mayo 04-06
Mayo 11-13
Tyrone 95/96

Was just looking at appearances in All Ireland finals (Mayo are in joint fifth with Meath behind Galway, Cork, Kerry and Dublin).

Then noticed some teams won and lost finals. However some never got over the line. The criteria I used was teams that either had multiple final appearances or at least one final and one semi in a different year.

I know I should not be torturing my fellow Mayomen with this type of stuff but I expect we re all fairly numb at this stage.

I would add Kildare 98/00 and Monaghan late 80s even if they didn't get to a final.

Ros and Monaghan might be the most unlucky- they came up against Kerry who were unstoppable.
Kildare were unlucky to meet Donnellan and Joyce.

Was thinking kildare 98 myself, The Cork team of the early 80`s would be in there, they run kerry tight on a few of those yrs when kerry done the 4 in a row

If we're going to mention the Monaghan team of the late 80s then it's only right that the Tyrone team from 84-89 should get a mention. They knocked at the door for a while

Jesus moy, no wonder I'm a tad pessimistic when you have not one, but 4 Mayo teams up there... :'(

Different sides my arse. And in '95 ye were dung. Or done.

Tyrone 95/96 should be off that list. He won two in '03 and '05.
