Hurling Discussion / Re: Limerick Hurling - A millionaires playground.
« on: February 20, 2019, 07:51:29 PM »
Limerick got over the line. They’ve always had a decent hurling team with great tradition but always in the shadows of the Cats Tipp and Cork. McManus is a huge sponsor within the county and his club. South Liberties, as JP’s horses run in his clubs colours. They are years behind what Dublin gets as seen from their current success and both coded playing Div1 and competing!

The money won’t make Limerick better hurlers, you need more than being a gym bunny to win All Ireland’s, lifting weights won’t make you a better hurling, it’s about the skills

No but the money certainly helps the coaching setups and top quality academies. Limerick's development in hurling has been flagged up for a good few years, with a fair few bob going to lads like Anthony Daly to help out.

How come there is no sponsorship logo on the Limerick jersey this year? I just noticed it at the weekend there.

JP is the sponsor, and for years he put Sporting Limerick. This year he's just decided to put nothing on, like the old days.

Perhaps someone from Offaly or Wexford won the Euromillions and they'll throw in 10% for the hurlers!

Nope, in the Naul. Fecking Dublin again!

Thats fine.
its not coming from GAA HQ so other teams aren't being denied
its a pity a few more wealthy individuals around the country wouldn't do the same.
I don't approve of him not being tax resident however

in fact, there should be tax incentives for donations to sporting organisations to build physical infrastructure, that would be open to any sport to use.

I think Sexton is mad to still be playing. Did he fail another HIA at the weekend?

Lads, United are not that far away at all. Get rid of Young, maybe Matic, and add a bit of depth around the squad for midfield and the wide positions. 11 on 11, United have a very decent team.

USA residents versus Irish habits, I reckon.

In fairness, it's easy to carry here because it's the size of a credit card. How big is a license in the free state?

In the Republic, it's the size of a credit card now too. Hence my earlier post :)

Rice not playing for us, confirmed.

I suppose the online abuse will now commence. Pity he would have been a good addition.

They must feel a bit stupid about their birthday tweet now.

You are requited by law to carry your licence in Ireland.

Road Traffic Act, 1994
PART IV

Driving Licences

Requirement to carry driving licence while driving vehicle.

25.—The following section is inserted in the Principal Act in substitution for section 40 of that Act:

“40.—(1) (a) A member of the Garda Síochána may demand, of a person driving in a public place a mechanically propelled vehicle or accompanying pursuant to regulations under this Act the holder of a provisional licence while such holder is driving in a public place a mechanically propelled vehicle, the production to him of a driving licence then having effect and licensing the said person to drive the vehicle, and if the person refuses or fails so to produce the licence there and then, he shall be guilty of an offence.

While driving. That means having it in the car would suffice, which is where I had it when it was a booklet. Now it's in my wallet..

Really? Youse boys are weird  ;D

I never did when it was the little booklet, but since my license was renewed it comes on the little credit card sized laminated card, and that's in my wallet all the time. In Arizona the license was like that too, so I carried it there as well.

Conor Murray's form has been so-so since he came back from injury. He was poor against Exeter in the HEC as well. However he is still one of the best 9s in the world, and I think we need to calm down a bit.

That's my point. The rest of the divisions have teams that cycle into boom and bust. The AFC East has the consistently excellent Pats, and the consistently ho-hum (not rubbish) rest.

Cardinals since 2002 win totals are 5,4,6,5,5,8,9,10,5,8,5,10,11,13,7,8,3  A lot of rubbish, a few ho-hum and 3 or 4 very good seasons.

Dolphins are 9,10,4,9,6,1,11,7,7,6,7,8,8,6,10,6,7 - Started off well, then lapsed into a regular pattern of 6,7 or 8 wins
Bills 8,6,9,5,7,7,7,6,4,6,6,6,9,8,7,9,6, - The epitome of average
Jets 9,6,10,4,10,4,9,9,11,8,6,8,4,10,5,5,4 - In fairness a few bright spots, but again a lot of average stuff.

Very few divisions in the NFL would have teams with winning records over that time span. Look at the NFC north Seany? Only the Packers with a winning record. The bears next at nearly 20 games under 500.
The Jets went to the AFC championship twice and both the Bills and the Phins have both made the playoffs in recent years.
I'm not having a go cadhlancian. I think I've said often that the Pats under this regime are incredible, an absolute anomaly especially in this salary cap and free agent era.

I was just surprised when you said the rest of the AFC East was .500.  Now I don't think the rest of the AFC East is rubbish, I just think it's average. And consistently average. Over a timespan like you've mentioned, most teams would be average, as you would expect.

I think the Pats would dominate every division, but the difference with the AFC East is the teams there appear to be consistently average. Over 17 years, the other divisions' teams are also average, but there's a much greater deviation from the average from year to year. I think that's why the AFC East gets a bad rap. The teams are always middle of the road, with a few notable exceptions as you've pointed out.

In contrast, the other divisions seem to flux every 2 or 3 years, so you have teams having a great season and really challenging, before falling away. That's why the other divisions seem to be much more competitive. Over 17 years there's minimal difference, but the highs are higher, and the lows are lower.

In the NFC West, all 4 teams have contested a Superbowl since 2002, some of them multiple times.
NFC North, all 4 teams have had big seasons, won the division, and 2 (I think) have been in Superbowls.
All 4 NFC south teams have contested Superbowls.
The NFC East has 2 Superbowl champions in that time, and all 4 have won the division.

AFC West, 2 Superbowl teams, and 2 regular division champions
AFC north, 2 Superbowl teams and a third team that has challenged seriously at times.
AFC South is probably the one closest to the AFC East in terms of superbowl challenges, in that it's really just the Colts that have contested superbowls, but I suppose the other 3 have competed well within the division.

So while I think the AFC East is not full of pathetic teams, and the Pats are truly exceptional, I think the AFC East lacks the peaks and troughs the other divisions have, and so it has the perception that they are not competitive.
