Colm's first game on charge. He's picked a few new faces for the game in Carlow. Looking forward to seeing how the Moriarty brothers from Curragha do. Reasonably strong side out. We need to find a new midfield pairing as Menton might have retired but not certain.

El Classico tomorrow night Laois vs Longford.
Big question is will Shamrock Shore eat in the Chicken Hut in Portlaoise again or go with the new Supermacs on the Dublin Road roundabout...
I hope Meath can make progress this year.
It wasn't just low crowds in Croke Park in 2003/4 that the GAA ended up fixing by putting all that money into the Dubs. They also broke the Leinster championship.

Cheaper to watch last Summers Leinster quarter final than an O'Byrne cup match tonight online . Something doesn't add up here ?!

Longford were far too good for a pretty dire Laois side last night.
Longford had the strong breeze in the first half and lead by a cricket score at half time (3-10 to 0-03)
As expected Laois did pick it up a little bit in the second half and pulled it back a little but the end result was never in doubt.
Final score Laois 0-13 Longford 3-18
One gripe was that there is no scoreboard in Portarlington - had to rely on twitter to make sure we had the scores right.
Longford face Carlow on Sat in Longford and then, hopefully a battle with Meath with the winners into the final.

Laois are trina cheile at the moment. They are in D4.
They must have money problems on top if they had to sell the scoreboard.
Portarlinton not the County Grounds, lots of problems in Laois but money isn't one of them.
The Laois people beside me reckoned only 2 names on the program were county material so perhaps Billy Sheehan is keeping his real team in cotton wool for the attempt to get out of Div 4.
If there isn't a 'real' team then Laois are in serious trouble. Laoislad would reckon Laois is a hurling county now - like their neighbours in Kilkenny.

Billy Sheehan isn't hiding a real team , we are in division 4 for a reason . We have about 5/6 lads to come back into that team ( some of them may not even make any difference in fact ) . Half of the Laois starters last night will be on the team and the 3 subs that came on ( Finn , OCarroll and B Byrne ) will all be on the team too . We will do very very well to come out of division 4 . Serious serious problems down here in Laois football at the moment from senior intercounty right the way down to grassroots .
Colm is committed to giving another handful of new lads their debut against Laois on Saturday. We might have another shaky start but we can throw on the experienced lads to bolster things again like last night.
Kildare are mixing it up a nice bit and giving lads a chance but in reality there isn't much time to mess around. Overall is your own county settling their teams earlier or even the style of play yet?
Wasn't at the Kildare v Wexford game but the forwards were firing seemingly and now our issues seem to be at the back!

1 point game after being 6 up at one stage. Meath subs not having the same impact as last week. Poor shooting and struggling to win our own kickouts.
Meath 2-10
Laois 0-16
All over. Poor finish for Meath. Laois scored 5 in a row. Not much impact from the subs but we had loads of possession but didn't turn it into scores.
Wonder if this was a different Laois that played the Royals than which played us last Wed?
Carlow were very poor in Longford. In the first half they had the gale force wind but only managed 2 points! WTF!
Not much better in the second half. Again I don't know if this is the Carlow team we'll see in the League.
Longford weren't as good as they were the other night but Carlow did have plenty behind the ball and their defence was alright.
All eyes on Ashbourne on Wed evening. A draw or win for Longford gets us to the final.
We really love the O'Byrne Cup in Longford. It's our Sam Maguire.

The issue with January games is the speed, although not exactly to the same extent in football
https://www.rte.ie/sport/hurling/2023/0106/1345281-timing-is-everything-calendar-sharpens-january-focus/
"In hurling, more so than football, this time of year there is no similarity to what we see in May, June and July. It's all about trying to get your timing right and not to overdo it in these months, in this weather. "The pace of the game in the Munster Senior League is probably 25% of championship, in my opinion. The league would be more like 50-75% depending on the stage of it.
"That extra 25% comes once championship starts and pitches are better, everything is faster. Can guys can adapt to that, not just physically but also mentally, in terms of decision-making, instinct and having the character to do it?"
Longford must have a constant speed across the year

I must admit. Peaking in January is not ideal.
That said, not sure if Declan Nerney ever played for Manning Gaels.....

Both counties should be fined heavily by Leinster Council.

Best way to get ready for the league is to play the games that are scheduled for them. No doubt they'll be playing a challenge now instead closer to base?
Yeah. At least throw a team out of lads that are at least close to being on the panel. Let them wear the county jersey for a game and let them show something of themselves. Embarrassing to just pull out.
This is feckin pointless at this stage. But, as you said they will be flat out now doing mad gruelling sessions and then playing long challenge games. But 3 games in a week and the screams will be 'player welfare'.
Make the O'Byrne Cup an U23 competition and play it away from Sigerson time of year. Keep lads around.

Absolutely. I'm sure in any county you'd get lads on the fringes would bite your hand off for the chance, even if it is a dead rubber.

Were these competitions not supposed to be scrapped a few years back ?
Yeah that was the plan.
I would march on the Dáil if there was a proposal to scrap the O'Byrne Cup.
It's (currently) our only realistic shot at silverware - well, along with the odd Div 3 or, God Help Us, Div 4 title.
Meath (SF v Longford):
Billy Hogan;
Ross Ryan, Michael Flood, James O'Hare;
Eoin Harkin, Donal Keogan, Daniel O'Neill;
Ronan Jones, Shane Crosby;
Jack O'Connor, Thomas O'Reilly, Jason Scully;
Cillian O'Sullivan, Keith Curtis, Donal Lenihan.
Meath going with a mix of experience and inexperience. Forwards have all Meath played a few years but jones in midfield is just back from injury while Crosby is new, as is goalkeeper Hogan. Apart from Keoghan and Harkin the defense has a very experimental and inexperienced look that makes me think we could get skewered early on if Longford are going all guns blazing.

A draw was enough but I thought we had done enough to win. 2 points up going into injury time I was worried about the killer goal....both sides fluffed their lines on numerous occasions.
Game was good enough given the atrocious weather. Hard to play champagne football in that. All I can say about the venue is that it now has surpassed Navan as my most hated pitch in Meath. The stand is a joke. Basically seats with a roof that didn't cover any of that.
Final Fri week. Wonderful
And Seafoid....I totes forgot about The Tailteann Cup. Sorry!!
Yeah. Unless you're behind the glass in Ashbourne your going to get soaked. But then you can't see anything. At least the pitch is decent.

I wonder wiill Kilkenny ever take part in this competition.
The long and short of it is that the modern Intercounty manager only wants to play matches at this time of year when no one knows about them and no one can watch. They'll travel out of province or to teams not in their divisions and play away with prying eyes.
They use sigerson and midweek as an excuse. They still travel for training and everything else.
They now run the game and county they in charge off.

There no excuse for a county with maybe 12-16 senior teams not fielding at this level. Dublin put out a u-20 team. I always thought it more beneficial to have player playing uni, late stages of club fball, u20, on top of your current senior player base to give you a bigger selection, later in the year for strength in depth.

After the match we all agreed that:
(i) Promotion to Div 2 was assured.
(ii) There was a clear part to the Leinster final.
(iii) While a tilt at Sam may be just be a little beyond us, we would certainly be there-and-there abouts
By the time these were nailed down, the nice polite boys and girls in the white coats were ready for us.
