It was Strabane to Aughnacloy got the go ahead (2 schemes) was it not? That's probably where most of the traffic is too

trueblue1234

Yeah but that will include the Strabane to Omagh and the Omagh to aughnacloy. Or am I wrong?

What has been approved is the section from Strabane to Ballygawley only.

Ballygawley to the border hasn't been included and is the least needed section of the route, however, with plans well advanced for road upgrades of the N2 from Ardee to the border that is likely to change.

The biggest issue will be the route from Strabane to Derry. Its effectively been sent back to the drawing board to find an acceptable route due to the flooding issues highlighted.

There is an Interactive Map
The bit from Magheramason to Newbuildings does look very close to the Foyle

Wesley Johnston's diagram below explains the difference in "Sections" & "Phases"
I seen him say on Twitter that it wasn't clear if an Omagh bypass was included in the Strabane to ballygawley phase

Section 2 was awarded to Sisk & Roadbridge and Section 3 was awarded to Grahams & Farrans. Section 1 was under BAM, Balfour Beatty & FP McCann. I know the contractors in section 1 and 2 are pretty active getting work packages sorted for next year.

Wesley is due to update his website with the A5 news in the next day or 2 on the A5 news - you'll get the right information from him there

I presume there'll be bypasses around Omagh and Strabane...and Aughnacloy to join the N2 to Emyvale?

Wesley Johnson's site is very informative on this

Section 2, from south of Strabane to south of Omagh, including the Omagh Bypass, will commence in spring 2025. Part of Section 3 from south of Omagh to Ballygawley will commence a year later, in spring 2026.

The Strabane bypass northwards needs some examination of the flooding implications.
The section to Aughnacloy will be near the end, when the new N2 bypassing Monaghan and Emyvale is at least designed.

There are better refreshments available in the hotel, traybakes and tea are not quite enough.

Apparently years ago the Silver Birches was the place where the squaddies use to socialise as it was deemed a safe space......says it all.
