GAA Discussion / Re: Division one 2021

Galway played like a gang of lads that met in the car park before the match, an abysmal performance. Any team can have a bad day out but there was no fight, no hunger, no desire to take on the Kerry team at all. I'd say not one of those Kerry boys will wake up with a bruise tomorrow, not a hand left on them all day. Fair play to Bernie Power, gets a lot of stick but in fairness he kept them from further embarrassment with the saves he made. Roscommon next, there needs to be one hell of a performance to get over this one but I don't know where it's going to come from. Pains me to say it but PJ seems out of his depth here.

Well done Mayo. Disappointing but as said above would have taken a decent performance this morning but still hugely disappointing to lose by a point. You could really see the lack of match sharpens in the first half, passes down into the feet of the forwards, sloppy hand passes etc. Conroy was brilliant again as was Shane Walsh but Christ he's a frustrating player, had a complete melt down at the end. Kieran Molloy player well when he came on, McDaid is improving as are the two Kellys, don't think Johnny Heaney is going to cut it at corner back. Power in goal was great, that one foray up the pitch in the first half apart of course but his distribution and his saves were excellent. As for the last tackle on Seán Kelly, of course you want your team to do that when you're the defending team but no more than the hurling yesterday, there has to be a more severe punishment for it, conceding a penalty for those types of fouls would cut a lot of that out.

I think in Galway the longer a player isn't playing the better he seems to get! We've all heard the talk about the Corofin players that should be playing but the way the club championship was laid out in previous years really didn't allow them much time to beak into the first 15 or even the panel. Ironically, this year would have been the first year they got a clear run at it but that didn't work out either. I think Steede showed that you need time to settle in, didn't start off great but management persisted with him and he had a couple of great games, so much so that we're lamenting his loss now so I'd be slow to write off he likes of Jason Leonard just yet, he needs time to settle but may not get it this year with the way games are scheduled.

Other players that were sometimes unfairly maligned like Cathal Sweeney and Declan Kyne that have left the panel of their own volition at least had good championship performances for Galway in their locker, some of the Corofin players who have bestrode the Galway and All Ireland club championships have never, ever done it in a Senior Galway jersey, reputations not earned at Senior IC level are not applicable at that level. There's a valid reason that a "good club player" is the biggest backhanded compliment that any IC squad player could get.

Bit harsh on the Corofin lads there? I can't think of any Corofin players who ever got on the panel in recent years without earning their place, if anything they've had to work harder when they've joined the panel late on the year. The goalkeeping position is a few problems rolled into one, Power was an improvement yesterday and is a better option than Gleeson in my opinion, Gleeson's kick outs are shocking but the problem is the lack of movement out the field, for Corofin Power generally goes short but he didn't have that option yesterday and our midfield was non existent when Flynn went off.  As mentioned already I think the biggest loss we have is John Daly this year, he was rock solid at 6. I could see Bradshaw coming back in there, he showed well yesterday when he came on and he's had a good year with Moycullen. Gary O'D another option for there, it'll probably be between the 2 of them for that jersey.

Paid £22.60 to watch all 4 Galway quarter finals last weekend, any other of the Galway posters watch any of the games? ~Barna & Tuam was very entertaining whilst I thought Paul Conroy was the standout performer from those 4 games.

Watched the 2 games on Saturday, great value for €10 in fairness. Hard to see past Corofin again this year, with nothing else to focus on this year I don't think that chance Tuam and MM had to catch them the last couple of years will be there this year. They're just unreal, one point between them and Salthill at half time but then all of a sudden they're 12 up and it's game over. The way they can put teams away over the course of a few minutes is scary! Barna and Tuam was hugely entertaining, even though Tuam seem to have gone back a little compared to last year, I think they'll have a huge battle to beat Moycullen in the semifinal.

Kieran Fitzgerald announces his retirement, some career he had.

https://m.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/gaelic-football/galway-and-corofin-stalwart-kieran-fitzgerald-announces-his-retirement-39157902.html?

Yes, and hit with the death of his girlfriend Mairead Meehan (sister of the Meehans Caltra) in 2007.

Not sure what place that has here, I don't think Kieran himself would appreciate comments like that.

Great summary as usual from AFA. I was delighted to see Sean Kelly start at corner back, mentioned it on here previously that I thought he'd be good in that role and he didn't let us down; He was excellent defensively and popped up with a brilliant goal.  Heaney had his hands full with Jamie Brennan and he struggled at times marking him but in fairness he won't be marking too many like Brennan throughout the year, as usual Heaney is the man you'd want going through on goal.

Kicckouts continue to be a problem and will need serious work between league and championship, Galway did well on Paton's kickouts but the wind likely played its part though; Comer made a difference second half and got his hands on every ball that come his way.

I thought O'Donnell had a poor first half, kicked the ball away on several occasions. Perhaps I'm been very harsh but I think on a summer days on a good pitch his lack of speed of the mark will come back to haunt us. Steede was anonymous, not sure how many more chances he'll get and D'Arcy will have to do more to keep himself in the team. Cooke is a big loss especially given the way Galway are playing. Boyle extremely lucky to stay on, PJ must see something in him but we've yet to see it yet. I liked that 2nd point Finnerty kicked, he didn't need much space to get his shot away; I still think he's got a bit of developing to do physically.

Walsh is just a joy to watch, lets hope he keeps this up as there's only a few players who can match him for talent.

What's going on here? Man was immense during the club series - doesn't seem like a lack of talent.
Apparently most of the Corofin lads are heading back this week so it'd be interesting to see how he'd get on with the likes of Silke or Molloy behind him and Burke up front, would it make any difference. In fairness to him he went straight in and didn't take the break the others did,I'd say he'll get another chance, PJ seems to like him and he's showing the commitment. Agreed about Boyle, don't think he has what it takes.

Galway team for Saturday named:
1   Connor Gleeson
2   Johnny Duane
3   Sean Mulkerrin
4   Johnny Heaney
5   Gary O'Donnell
6   John Daly
7   Cillian McDaid
8   Ronan Steede
9   Cein D'Arcy
10   Eamon Brannigan
11   Damien Comer
12   Finnian Ó Laoi
13   Robert Finnerty
14   Shane Walsh
15   Michael Daly

These early team announcements are great, gets people discussing the games if nothing else. Good to see Steede get his chance, hopefully it goes well for him, he's earned it in fairness. It'll be interesting to see how he fares out at the next level. Surprised to see Comer start, there's never a full 70 in him. Same back 6 as the last day which is a worry up against those Kerry forwards. Think Duane is only keeping that corner warm for Liam Silke. Not too sure about the thoughts of Johnny Heaney up against O'Donoghue either  ???

I Agree! Im not sure that always happened though, the sweeney brothers and even bradshaw come to mind. I think the popular oinion is that Kieran Molloy should have been starting the last 2 years for galway. I have a feeling PJ might go too far the other way though looking at that 15. Its hard not to have bias for your own I suppose. Is that killererin fella any good?

He's decent, he was on the fringes of the panel last year and captained the u-21s in recent years. Not sure if he's up to inter county but we'll soon find out.

7 Galway titles in a row for Corofin. Won the replay 0-11 to 0-8.  Ballintubber v Corofin next Sunday.

Corofin ground it out after being behind at HT again. They look a tired team though and even though they often improve once out of Galway I think they could be vulnerable in Connacht this year.

Is that 14 county titles for Kieran Fitzgerald? Mad!

It is, it's some record and as far as I know he's been involved on the pitch in all 14 of those, he's not sitting on the bench collecting medals. Gentleman too. Fair play to Corofin, Tuam gave them their fill of it but Corofin did enough to see themselves through. Steede and Wall were their best on the day. Their form up front is a bit worrying though, 11 scores from 31 chances I think I saw on twitter? They'll be hoping to improve that the next day. People seem to think this is a sign Corofin have regressed this year and maybe they have but Tuam were really good the last day and again today.

Extra spice for the Galway final as Tuam Stars are the only club to have done 7-in-a-row. They will be aiming to prevent Corofin from doing the same.

They might be aiming to prevent them from doing it but they haven't a hope in my opinion.
