In some of these places the people putting up the flags might not even live there at all. It is all a group think thing, in this case to make sure that people do not move from Newry.

I think if you go through a lot of places over the summer, with flags and buntings etc. you think that the town/village is a real loyalist area but in a lot of cases it's not.

It's just a few thick heads who bedeck the whole place in flags etc. but the actual population is mainly nationalist.  Plus they seem to go up earlier and stay up later these days.

I can think of Maghera, Castledawson, Portglenone and Magherafelt etc. Villages/towns that could now be 70% nationalist in some cases, maybe more.

There are hundreds of places like this in the north.  It's just the thick heads don't understand demographics.  Maybe in a way, it's a soothing thing for them...but it's just holding back the demographic tide.

Nationalists wouldn't have the same 'grá' for flags but Dungiven is usually covered in them. Better to have a nice pole with flag on it in a memorial etc. and kept tidy.
