When learning to juggle, get the hang of two balls with one hand, after which, three in two is a gentle step on.

"We are like dwarfs standing upon the shoulders of giants, and so able to see more and see farther than the ancients."
Bernard of Chartres

“And what haunts me, is that in all the faces of all the bears that Treadwell ever filmed, I discover no kinship, no understanding, no mercy. I see only the overwhelming indifference of nature. To me, there is no such thing as a secret world of the bears. And this blank stare speaks only of a half-bored interest in food. But for Timothy Treadwell, this bear was a friend, a savior.”
Werner Herzog

[He’s] “like a lighthouse in the Bog of Allen, brilliant but useless”
Brian Lenihan, Snr

"What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"
Nick Hornby

“Through all he said, even through his appalling sentimentality, I was reminded of something—an elusive rhythm, a fragment of lost words, that I had heard somewhere a long time ago. For a moment a phrase tried to take shape in my mouth and my lips parted like a dumb man's, as though there was more struggling upon them than a wisp of startled air. But they made no sound, and what I had almost remembered was uncommunicable forever.”
F Scott Fitzgerald

Thought this was an interesting graphic - each square represents approx 17K people apparently.
Kerry & Kilkenny don't do badly when you consider all the size of them.

What does 'stock of emigrants' mean under Emigration, 2005? I can't believe that is number of people leaving Ireland in one year.

Do 1/3 of all University graduates really leave Ireland?

MacKenzie claims TV quiz honours
Notts County midfielder Neil MacKenzie is doing his bit to help dispel the myth that all footballers are stupid.

The 32-year-old has made football history as the first player to appear on Channel 4 quiz show Countdown.

And MacKenzie is proving a hit on the show, winning five episodes in a row, shooting to the top of the leaderboard.

"He's proving to be a strong contestant and has a broad vocabulary which is essential to do well," said associate producer Kate Horton.

MacKenzie was encouraged to enter by his mother, who is a regular viewer of the show.

On Monday the midfielder will continue his reign in the Champion's Chair and is aiming for a sixth win.

He hopes to win the maximum eight games in a row to get 'Octochamp' status.

What GAA stars do you think would acquit themselves well on Countdown?

I'm heading to LA in a couple of weeks, and was wondering if people here have any specific recommendations on places to visit within driving distance of LA? I'm considering the LA to San Francisco drive, south to San Diego / Mexico, and out to Vegas also, time permitting. I've never visited the state before, so have no idea what opportunity costs choosing one route over another will present.

General discussion / US Immigration Rules

Does anyone know anything about getting into the US (as a visitor) with a criminal record?
The person in question has a drink driving conviction (10 odd years ago) from Belfast and wants to head out to the States for a few weeks this summer.
Firstly, do the US immigration issue definitives (if so where?) on this sort of thing or is it a case by case decision?
Would they be better coming clean upfront or is there scope for detection avoidance?
