Seven of the 16 slots in the Sam Maguire Cup come by way of league standings. The best four are seeded third and the remaining three fourth but their identities really don't emerge until the confirmation of the eight provincial winners and runners-up, who are first and second seeds

Meath are Tailteann winners and Clare, Tipperary or Waterford are going to reach a Munster final

So there are 14 spots available at best outside the other provincials.

Ulster and Connacht likely won't (although might) so realistically it comes down to who makes it to the final in Leinster from the non Dublin side of the draw. Anyone other than Louth would push Down out of the all Ireland unless they make the Ulster final.

Yes, Down would prefer not to be in the Tailteann. No one wants to be in the Tailteann but if that's where Down end up then they will try and win it like they tried last year. All Down can do is win their next 3 games and guarantee the All Ireland series place.

Even if all 8 Provincial Finalists came from Divisions 3 and 4 the top 7 NFL teams will qualify i.e the 6 who remain in D1 plus D2 winners.

So definitely in it are-

Meath, Derry, Dublin, Kerry, Mayowestros, Tyrone, Galway and Armagh/Donegal.

I think Laverty has openly stated that he wants to get into the AI series this year. They probably do need to be competing at a higher level to continue progressing and I think they'll all become Louth supporters during the Leinster campaign this season.

It seems the IT interns who have to work weekends at our broadcasters are good at fancy graphics, but are not aware of the rules of the GAA with regard to standings at the end of the National League.

The four pairs of finalists should be asterisked with a note that the winning team from the final ranks higher.

It shouldn't be that difficult.
