Never had a BMW before, but there's certainly enough floating about to suggest they're not a bad car to own?

At that age it all depends on the past owners. If it is well enough maintained possibly ok, but it's a 10 year old car at the end of the day.

I've the 2017 420d xdrive grand coupe version and apart from the EGR call backs it's been pretty good. Nice car and holds the road really well.
Work colleague has a 2015 430d and he got a massive bill for an engine problem lately. Can't remember the details of it though.

I have a 2014 520d M. Nicest car I've ever driven. Got it last year very low miles. Had an egr and an airbag recall. Its a bmw so if something goes wrong it won't be cheap. Also has run flats another expensive option. But I love it.

Anything wrong with any car costs a fortune now unless you know how to sort it yourself.

I was told lately the EGR issue is to be sorted early next year. New system going in all the cars.

People in the north are obsessed with BMW. They're good and shite at the same time. Gearbox service is needed after about 60k miles so check if that's been done, if not you'll need to do it whenever it reaches that stage. I think some of the earlier 2013-15 f30 3-series had the N47 engine which is known for premature chain failure - might be work checking what engine is in yours and whether the work has been or needs carried out.

On a completely unrelated note, BMW are so stingy with the spec for m-sport cars. Literally everything  is an optional extra.

Quote from: Deerstalker on November 13, 2023, 10:03:42 PMIs £200 steep for a service, spark plugs, oil change & filters ?

New mechanic and he's a bit dearer than the last one. Just wondering what the ball park is these days for a service.

At the weekend I got
5 litres oil £20
Fuel and oil filter £20
That's £48 including vat.
It's usually £30 to service although it could be £40 depending on the vehicle.
Spark plugs aren't dear I don't think.
Wasn't heater plugs by any chance.
Depends on your location. If it's a city  garage it could be dear has there's probably rent to pay on the premises. Your always better to buy the parts yourself. All you need is the reg of the vehicle and go to the supplier yourself.
Go back and ask for a receipt to see the breakdown.

I got my car serviced last month but it looks like the detail didn't stay in the service history in the computer in the car. Poss he didn't save it.  Do I need to go back to the mechanic or can he backdate it next time I'm there. BMW 5 SERIES f10.

The wing mirrors in the car are not folding closed when I lock the car.. I know first world problems but, is there a quick fix?
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Ea

Cut a potato in half and rub it over the wing mirrors. Then drive to a fork in the road and throw the Prost to the left road.

Have you checked the obvious solution that you haven't changed a setting or flicked a switch somewhere to put off the automatic fold setting.
Similar thing happened with my car – one of the wing mirrors had not fully clicked back into place, resolved it by manually pushing it fully back after a few days of cursing it.
Wish I'd known there was a cure avaialble.

Considering getting a new car. Any recommendations for an SUV type, budget is around 15K? Was looking at the VW troc, but know next to nothing about cars and generally consider it pot luck.

Sometimes the folding is linked to the button that selects which mirror you are adjusting from inside.

Wife changed a CRV for a 2019 Mini Countryman lately, it was in that budget roughly. Looked at the X1 & X2 but she liked the extra finishes that came with the mini and it feels sporty in comparison to others. Bigger than you think too.
Another friend  went with a Seat Arona (a t-roc in different clothes) and it seems like a decent motor but cheaper than the VW.
