An Watcher

No disrespect but Derrys forward lines never convinced me.  Fabulous defenders and midfield but forwards were never at the same level

That Mayo team was like a FRED process. Fast rise in 89. Exponential decay afterwards. The 1993 semi against Cork was the purest facepalm.

Like Galway 1983.

was at the game. Mayo played like they have played many time since and celebrated the occasion instead of trying to win a football game.  Cork were there for the taking.  In fairness that Cork team went on until their last legs so they had massive character.  Remember watching them out on their feet after 25 mins against Derry in a final 93, Derry who hadnt a decent forward and 1 free taker and them still playing to the final whistle..

Cork were out on their feet because they were down to 14 men! Tony Davis getting a straight red for a shoulder!

Ai but if the ref had done it right Cahalane would have went minutes previous.

yes

Maroon Manc

Cork were robbed the first game game in 88 against Meath when Tommy Sugrue gave a phantom free to Meath with the last kick of the game with Cork a point ahead.

Tompkins was one of my hero's growing up, probably the best footballer of that era who dragged Cork over the line; I read his book recently, a highly driven character.

Cork were always going to win in 89, don't think they played well but probably had ideal opposition on the day.

Have vivid memories of the 1989 All Ireland Final due to personal reasons.  My Grandfather was in hospital in Belfast on the run up to the final, and had confidently predicted to me earlier that week that Cork would win the All Ireland the following Sunday.  Unfortunately he didn't live to see the final, with his funeral taking place on All Ireland Final Sunday.

Mayo lost Greg Maher just a few years ago

John Kerins and Mick McCarthy? were there others?
Mick McCarthy RIP  was the sub that came on a was incredible probably his best game ever for Cork.
the game itself was a fair loss Cork that little bit better

much the same team had really put it up to Dublin in 1986 so they were no on hit wonders

AS for hype 1996 was not a patch on it ,this was the era of Byrnes babe's and it seemed normal.
Every bar house shop in the county  seemed to be decorated
even after a massive crowd went to Knock airport to greet them. Good innocent times  had we known what was to come......

In those days the only route to the final came around once every 3 years with a semifinal against an Ulster team.
The last decent Connacht team at that time was the Roscommon side of Dermot Earley and they could never build up the experience and cuteness to win Sam.
Mayo had to win on the day. Cork had more experience.

Mayo broke the system in 96 when they beat Kerry. It was unbelievable.

Cork played Dublin to a draw in 83. Kerry won 3 in a row between 84 -86. Meath started winning Leinsters in 86 .
Cork lost to Meath in the 87 and 88 finals. A bit like the run up to their 2010 win.
