GAA Discussion / The GAA and Olympic recognition
December 06, 2007, 10:18:54 AM
I was watching TV3 sports last night and apparently the GAA are looking for Gaelic games to be recognized as an olympic sport. If they succeed they can get local councils on the European continent to build facilities that cater for the GAA. Anyone know anything about this?

Did anyone watch it last night online? I missed it last night but have it on now but nothing's happening.

I heard that the Cork players(football and hurling) will take all necessary action if the CB decision to revert back to the county selectors being appointed by the board rather than the manager is not changed.

GAA Discussion / Player Burnout
October 14, 2007, 05:56:09 PM
There's an interesting article in the Sunday Times by Christy O'Connor about the effect of dropping the U21 championship. He points out that it could have the effect of allowing many players to leave gaelic games for lack of matches. Sorry but I don't know how to upload it, but it does raise some interesting points.

Surely questions have to be asked of mental strenght of the AB's now. They have only won one WC yet have been favourites for all of them, and this in a competition that has only 5/6 truely competitive teams any year.

GAA Discussion / Grassroots of the GAA on TV3
September 29, 2007, 11:51:37 PM
I presume many of ye have seen this, so credit where it's due the episodes so far have been very good. I thought that this weeks one on Crossmaglen was particularly good. As was the show about the Dublin ladies footballers on TnaG. TV3 seem to be making a play for the GAA recently, is this due to the TV rights hooha?

Congress today adopted the proposed changes to the hurling championship, can't see it making much of a difference TBH.

GAA Discussion / Minor football panels
September 15, 2007, 11:02:50 AM
Lads I'm looking for a list of the Kerry, Cork, Laois, Tipperary, Waterford, Limerick, Clare, Mayo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Offaly minor football squads from this year. If anyone has this (or some of it) info or knows how I could get it I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

GAA Discussion / Morgan fails to show for press night
September 06, 2007, 06:38:53 PM
I understand that Billy isn't going to Cork's official All-Ireland press night. Is this a result of his apparantly ongoing fued with the media? I personally think this is ridiculous, while Billy has no obligation to attend, this behaviour is childish and unhelpful IMO. Is it too much to ask that all players( only 6 are going) and backroom staff are present for one night. It's(the All Ireland, not the Cork press night) the biggest day in Gaelic Football yet GAA scribes can't get access to one of the managers. But it's not only Billy, many coaches seem to believe that talking to the media will put the hex on his team or that building a them V us relationship will aid his team. I find this extremely annoying. It's time for some managers to grow up.

Hurling Discussion / Waterford V Limerick
August 05, 2007, 08:39:05 PM
One week to go to this novel pairing, can't see anything but a comfortable Waterford win. I've spoken to a good few Limerick lads over the past week and a few of them reckon that Limerick would beat Waterford (if they got there). I think they are being seriously delusional, remember to get to this stage Limerick have only beaten Tipp and Clare, and if you go through their form lines over the past 24 months it doesn't suggest that either team are up to much. Although Limerick will give it 100% and they should put it up to Waterford for 2/3 of the game I think Waterford will pull away in the last 15min. to win by at least 6 pts.

Hurling Discussion / Waterford V Cork....again!
July 14, 2007, 09:56:20 PM
Well despite the magnificent win for Tipp tonight I still don't rate them, not sure what happened to Cork after the first 20min. but that was the first time that I've seen so many of Corks main men completely disappear out of a game. I would have fancied Waterford to beat Tipp even after the game tonight but Cork will be completely different next week(is it on next week?). I think unfortunately Cork have Waterford's number and will recover from tonight and still make the final, though I hope I'm wrong.

Hurling Discussion / Waterford V Cork

The Waterford team for Sunday

Clinton Hennessey
Eoin Murphy
Declan Prendegast
James Murray
Tony Browne
Ken McGrath
Aidan Kearney
Micheal Walsh
Stephen Molumphy
Eoin Kelly
Seamus Prendergast
Jack Kennedy
John Mullane
Dan Shanahan
Paul Flynn

Looks strong to me, with Flynn (a new slimmer version by all accounts) on board and Cork missing a few lads it's hard to see byond the Waterford boys. I recekon Waterford would have won anyway but Sean Og will be a major loss in particular as he seems to have 'big Dans' number. Normally I don't think a goalie being suspended for a match is of major importance in intercounty hurling, but Donal Og is a major cog in the Cork game plan, his loss could prove significant also.

Lads would really appreciate all and any advice on how to set up and maintain a club website. I have only the basic computer skills i.e I can turn it on and off. I have no programming experience atall and little idea about how to go about this. The page design is already done so I basically only need to keep  it updated. But I want to add new features and improve the site dramatically aswell. Somebody told me to check out html tutorials on the internet for advice on changing the text is this what I need to do?

British & Irish Governments Plan Ceremony in Croke Park
Northern Ireland Minister Peter Hain has announced details of a joint ceremony before Irelands crunch game against England in Croke Park on the 24th February.

The significance of the game is not lost on GAA followers and republicans who remember the infamous shooting of 14 players and supporters by the British Army on the 21st November 1921 .

However according to GAA spokesman Ulick Magee a plan being devised by the GAA and the Northern Ireland office, will attempt to draw a line under the incident.

"We've spoken to the British government and they understand the significance of the event back in 1921. Back then 14 people were killed by British forces so in the spirit of the peace process and friendship we're proposing that we shoot 14 of their lot before the match. Then maybe have fireworks afterwards or something." Said Mr Magee.

Government Reaction
The plan has had a mixed reaction from Downing Street . Prime Minister Tony Blair thinks the idea has merit but said that it needs to be done properly and with dignity.

"Frankly I think its a small price to pay for progression in Anglo-Irish affairs, but I think the idea of getting Ray Houghton to do the shooting would be too much for many English fans to take particularly after his goal against us back in 1988. And he's Scottish which is worse."

Proposed Victims
According to informed sources, the GAA and Number 10 have already drawn up a list of names for those to be shot. The list, which is not yet agreed, is thought to be a compromise of people that both the Irish and English public dislike. Among the names are moaney-hole singer James Blunt, foul mouth idiot Jade Goody, Trinny & Suzannah, Man Utd donkey Rio Ferdinand, cream cake expert Vanessa Feltz, "comedian" Russell Brand and any of the blokes who do outside broadcasts for Sky News.

But discussions took an ironic twist when both sides agreed on shooting Belfast singer Brian Kennedy, but neither side agreed on what nationality he was. GAA representatives claim he's British with their Foreign Office counterparts claiming he's Irish. The Irish claimed no Irishman should sing or dance in such a manner and the English saying he couldn't be a Brit because he had no tattoos on his forearm and didn't wear Ben Sherman shirts. However there was eventual consensus that he should be shot regardless of his nationality.

Plans agreed
The shooting will be carried out my members of the 2nd Infantry Battalion from Cathal Brugha Barracks in Dublin . The original idea to get the FCA to carry out the executions were dropped when they revealed that their rifles are in fact made of baked-plastercine.  Similarly the Garda Emergency Response Unit was discounted for fear they'd shoot more innocent civilians then claim overtime for it.

GAA Discussion / football 7's
November 18, 2006, 03:58:32 PM
Looking to start up a "social type" 7-a-side football and hurling competition (i.e mixed male & female teams, people without any GAA experience can play, etc.) to raise funds for my club, hopefully it might become an annual thing if it turns out to be successful. Has anyone any experience of doing something similar or any ideas on the type of rules to enforce so that everyone regardless of ability can play and enjoy. Thanks in advance.

GAA Discussion / Footballing lesson from the Aussies
November 13, 2006, 06:34:06 PM
Now that things have died down a bit anybody else feel that the Aussies underlined how ordinary we are at our national game.Like the English soccer public we often talk big about our footballers, unlike the English we don't have a World Cup to show us poorly we play the game we invented. Futher evidence  can be taken from the weekend just past when talented well prepared club teams from around the country failed to get more than 5 scores in 60 minutes of football
