Rossies could have beaten us by 15 pts if they had there scoring boots on,would love to be able to say galway didn't turn,in fairness roscommon didn't allow any momentum to be built up and fought for every ball, galway just not at the races.

Don't worry - the Galway lads will all be attending the races this year!

I'd say a decision on the Mayo Kildare qualifier had more to do with sky having rights to these qualifiers than anything else. That is the pick of the games next weekend so was always going to be fixed for Saturday evening.

Whats so hard to comprehend with it? They were relegated from Senior Championship and thus started playing intermediate championship. You have to win this championship to go back up senior. They lost the intermediate final last year to Ballyhaunis and thus stayed playing at that level. It could work the other way. They could be playing division 6 in the league and playing intermediate championship. The league is not taken seriously in Mayo - some use it to develop through the ranks, some don't really give a damn about it. Add to that plenty 'starred' league games which don't have county players involved and you can progress in the league if you take it seriously.

GAA Discussion / Re: AISF Mayo v Dublin
September 01, 2015, 12:12:29 PM
Plenty on this board have completely lost the plot. I had thought it was the place for good, reasonable GAA debate but this thread has descended into a bit of a farce. It'd actually shock you the level of hatred that sometimes comes out in people (although I can only assume this is mostly from the vocal minority).

From a Mayo perspective I think we should go with the same set-up we started with the last day with maybe different personnel. Durcan will obviously start for Vaughan, don't think Drake will start  again. They might go with Keane/Coen (or Cunniffe if fit) for Drake. More support to AOS and try and vary the play a bit more. Jack McC and Flynn (1st half) caused us a lot of problems - plans needed for these two, brilliant footballers. Our backs did alright on sun considering the quality of ball dublin were getting in in the first half, pretty much negating the sweeper (although you could argue the sweepers primary role is to cut out goal chances, which would have been achieved to a large extent if boyle had held his ground instead of charging straight into doherty for the dub penalty). We need to put the squeeze on around the middle more if we're not going to engage right up in their 45. So keep it tight again then maybe bring in barry/dillon/freeman/andy for impact.

Was behind the managementt on sunday and was impressed with them the last ten mins. They kept the heads and thought through every sub - plenty of them there to come to a consensus anyway!

Very young Kerry side but lots of quality.
Bit unfair on Mayo supporters that this is on at 2pm and senior game is at 6pm - thought they'd be adjacent in the schedule. Basically forces Mayo supporters to watch the Tyrone-Monaghan game.

Is the Mayo team comprised just from non-senior clubs or is it essentially a B panel?

It's comprised of anyone who didn't play senior club championship in Mayo in 2014. There is no sense this is a 'b' team or feeder team - more a random selection of guys who made themselves available and who got on a bit of a run. It seems to have a specific purpose in Kerry to blood younger players or players who have potential. It's more a burden or afterthought for our county board - as could be seen with sudden rescheduling of club fixtures for the Connacht final. Still it'll be a great experience for the lads to tog out at Croker.

The main thing that I took from the match is how critical the fitness of Cillian O'Connor is, purely from an open play perspective. He was the one with the vision and composure to deliver the final pass for goals v galway and it was something that was missing yesterday. If he was on the pitch I think we'd have raised a few green flags.
Something I've noticed alot of from this side is their ability to solo with the wrong foot and for it to appear to come naturally -  Its something boyle, dillon, COC, Higgins are fully adept at, handy for getting you out of tight situations.
Plenty of positives but I saw plenty to work on - distribution being the main one. Like someone else has said hopefully we can get through the club championship unscathed - think we're due a bit of luck with injuries at this stage!

is that guy mark ronaldson still playing for mayo? he scored something like 1-5 against tyrone in the league last year.

Ya hes on the panel. Was dropped from it for a while earlier in the year but is back pushing to be in the match day 26. Has been scoring for fun for Shrule GC this year. Hes a crafty operator with pace to burn, probably his height has counted against him at this level.

Ronaldson and Howley are in the Mayo panel as well, and Barry Moran was back training with them before the Connacht Final - not sure if he's still there.

If you were a neutral, you'd say Cork are clear favourites, and should win by 5+.
If we do any better than that, we will have put in a big performance, and I'd be happy with that.
There's always a chance though, and Cork aren't the finished article. They are huge men, great athletes, but can take the wrong options if pressured into it. Whether we'll be able to force them into that is what we'll find out at the weekend.

Hopefully there'll be a big Mayo crowd, as I can't see many Corkonians coming up - they'll wait for their semi v Kerry!  ;)

Yea i just highlighted those that were named on the 26man panel v ros

Some positives to take into the game the next day
1. Most teams love being underdogs
2. Cork wont have much of an idea of our tactics\dangermen judging from the connacht championship
3. Alot of our players have tasted big game success against some of their players in the aforementioned u21 game
4. Weve a manger who has instilled a good work ethic into the team and isnt afraid to make changes to adapt to situations
5. Weve got Andy

Negatives
1. Its Cork

Love the way this thread is starting to turn around  ;)
Was just checkin out the u21 final teams from 2006. Theres some amount of players from both teams that have stayed the distance, and alot of the cork lads have become proven big time players.

From our point of view the most disappointing absentee is aidan kilcoyne, he was the winning of that final. Anyway just goes to show weve beaten alot of their main players in a major match in the not too distant past.

CORK: K O'Halloran; R Carey, C Murphy, S O'Donoghue; D Limerick, M Shields, E Cadogan; A O'Connor, P Kelly; F Gould, C Keane, P Kerrigan (capt); D Goulding, P O'Flynn, J Hayes.

Subs used: G O'Shea for Hayes (44 mins), F Lynch for Kelly (52)

MAYO: K O'Malley; T Howley, G Cafferkey, K Higgins (capt); C Barrett, T Cunniffe, C Boyle; S O'Shea, B Moran; A Campbell, J Dillon, A Kilcoyne; M Ronaldson, M Hannick, M Conroy.

Subs used: S Ryan for Boyle (half time), K Costello for Dillon, E Varley for Hannick (both 40 mins)

As others have said its great to win a connacht title...Conditions were as poor as ive ever witnessed for a connacht championship match. Again the workrate from mayo was very impressive. JH has them fighting for every ball and when that happens from 1-15 youll never be far away. Solid performances from hennelly, cunniffe, richie, mort, aos, andy and coc. Theres more to come from the other 8 as well. Doherty and Freeman can offer much more and open spaces with a dry pitch will suit these two. Jez i can see doherty exploding into life some day soon if he gets the right ball. In the  first half yday both doherty and coc were constantly having their shirts held and couldnt get that half yard of space that they crave.
Both caff and mcgarrity will be pushing hard for inclusion the next day as will enda varley - a good position for the management to be in. For me theres still question marks over the CHB spot - Not sure if vaughan has the awareness or vision to play there, though he certainly has the fitness and the physique. In fairness its probably the most pivotal postion on the field and alot of counties have trouble filling it. You had both Donegal and Meath playing corner backs there at the weekend, kerry still experimenting with brosnan there.

Think im right in saying we're at a slight disadvantage with the QF draw as we've a 1 in 3 chance of getting cork (presuming they win) as opposed to a 1 in 4 chance if the result of armagh\tyrone v roscommon game was known pre the QF draw. But anyway we cant change who we get, only put our own house in order. We'll more than likely be underdogs (unless we draw the limerick\wexford tie), a position that suits most teams.

GAA Discussion / Re: The Committee Room
July 15, 2011, 08:27:46 AM
Actually think the idea of the committee room is a good one. A couple of current\ex players and a journalist discussing topical issues and games is a sound one. For me it could be so much more...ie; longer, better presenter and much better previews to the weekends games. Used to like the way Breaking Ball visited communities and previewed games - think that should be incorporated. Their current half @rsed attempt at doing this via the asking questions off two players is laughable. The one time they attempted something like that this season was the other night with John Galvin, which was very insightful. But we're not likely to see anything inspiring whilst rte leave the same old tired heads in command of the GAA coverage.

I see Noel Connelly is going for a Roscommon win - better forwards and proven free-taker. He could be right but as a former manager of a lot of these guys it doesn t say a lot about his faith in them. As a former player and captain I would expect a more bullish attitude.

On a different note it is good to see that he is still bitter about the contemptible decision to send off his brother in 01, a decision that cost us that particular final. So we re due a break in this one but my experience of Collins as a referee I wouldn t be surprised by another shafting. It s a wonder they didn t send down that Monaghan ***** to show us what a great referree he is again before he goes. That way both counties would have something to protest about.

Think youre mixing that up with David Nestors brain freeze moysider  ;)

GAA Discussion / Re: An Mhí v Cill Dara

Meath are a great price for this one at 2/1, especially in Navan. Tempting to have some of that. In typical GAA style one of the teams scraped through (and has now been written off) and one team won impressively (and has now been written up), so its all set up for the supposed shock.

I am just wondering about the possible scenarios for the club championship games in August and if anyone can shed some light on the situation?

There is a round of club championship games pencilled in for the weekend of August 7th but it all depends on how Mayo get on.

To my reckoning if Mayo win against Roscommon, they are in the All Ireland quarter finals, which is yet to be confirmed for a weekend in early August, either the 1st or 7th. I think this date is more likely the 7th which would push the club championship out another week to the weekend 14th? Or would it?

And if Mayo lose the Connacht final, they are have one (or two?) game(s) in the back door which, if they win, will also mean they are in a quarter final which means that that club fixture is pushed out again ? Or does it?

If Mayo win, they play on the weekend of July 30th/31st/August 1st. If Mayo lose it's that oul 6-day turn around (23rd of July I think.) Hope that clears it up for ya.

Thanks, so the club championship weekend of August 7th is set in stone unless Mayo draw a quarter final or something?

The way that draw went means its all up in the air again. Will now def be playin wkend 30th\31st in either a 4th round or a quarter final. If its a 4th round and we win then therell be a qf the wkend 7th August, pushing club championship games out again.

Bollix to that, so that means IF we get that far, it'll be semi-final prices we have got! (Because there'll be hurling on as well. >:(
Eh id gladly pay semi prices if we get that far......hoping that w're in the front door though...
