If the COVID vaccines don’t work, what do we do then?

Since the emergence of the pandemic vaccines have been held up as the silver bullet to get us out of this mess of restrictions and lockdowns. Even today governments and media outlets are focusing on a rough date when we will probably reach herd immunity through vaccination. But what if the vaccines don't last long enough to be effective or a variant emerges and spreads that the vaccine doesn't cover. What's plan B?

This isn't a thread on the likelihood of the vaccines being ineffective so leave those comments at the door. I'd just like to know what our options are if the vaccines can't bring an end to the pandemic.

Really good testing techniques could bring it to an end also. Something cheap, easy to use and reliable. Then you could test everyone often and drive out the virus.
A much improved treatment would help too, which if given quickly, after the aforesaid test, that would stop the virus getting a hold.
If at first you don't succeed, then goto Plan B

I hoped something like this would have emerged by now but it hasn't

It would need to be mass produced, it would need to be almost instant, it would need to be free or at least almost free, it would need to be available almost like masks are available now, for the general public to self test

Which means the government would have to pay for it

Hard to see something like that emerge

We do like we should have done 6/7 months back and get on with livable restrictions.

It's probably going to be an iterative process. The development of the virus is random. If vaccines can cope with them the pandemic is over. If not, vaccines will need to be tweaked.

All the vaccines prevent serious illness if you contract covid even the varients. Meaning it turns covid into something more like a cold or mild flu. Surely people can live with that.

Never questioned whether he knows his stuff or not. Donald Trump is a billionaire but that probably doesn't suit your narrative.
