When Dermot Earley played his last match for Roscommon against Mayo in the Connacht championship, the Mayo players lifted Earley onto their shoulders and carried him off the field. A lovely tribute to a great player, and a great display of mutual respect and sportsmanship.
I'm not sure you'd see it happen today....

Mayo won by 2-20 to 0-07

Sligo IT are obviously a very weak team after two hammerings from Roscommon and Mayo. But still, good scoring from Mayo - Austie and Mikey Sweeney scored a lot from what I heard, but don't have any details of the scorers.
A rejuvenated Roscommon up next - should be a bit more bite in that one  ;)

Just got a text from someone at the Sligo IT v Mayo match.
Mayo winning by 10 points to 2 at half time. Mayo had only one wide, which is good going if the wind in Ballinode is anything like it is in Dublin.
Aidan O'Shea started CHF but has gone off injured. Barry Regan playing full forward, Barry Kelly midfield, not sure of the rest of the team but Dillon, Harte and Kevin Keane aren't playing today.
He also said Sligo IT are brutal so the scoreline is nothing to talk about really - sure weren't they hammered by the Rossies last week  :P ;)

General discussion / Re: Recession to continue to 2010
December 04, 2008, 12:31:35 PM
QuoteMy mate warned me about the Recession coming way back in 2001. I laughed in his face. I wish I didn't now.

Well it was obviously going to happen at some stage - things couldn't continue the way they were going and the govt did nothing to cool things down. They actually fanned the flames. So it was going to end abruptly, and badly.

I predict today that the recession will at some time in the future come to an end and the economy will begin to recover - you may marvel at my wisdom when it happens.  ;)

General discussion / Re: irish name spelling
November 26, 2008, 02:14:41 PM
QuoteThe fact it is girls name is Lauren McCrory. When you go to France you don't change your name to be more French. Its a annoying practice the GAA should do away with.

I'd agree with you where the name in question is not a 'native' Irish name and has no existing translation - it's stupid making up a name just so it looks Irish.
But many names (including mine) are just anglicised versions of an Irish name. So you're not changing your name at all - you're just using the Irish translation.
I don't see any problem with that.

QuoteYes, because telephones and other methods of modern communication are completely unavailable to me in 'far-flung' Australia - the notion that my current location precludes from having an opinion or some knowledge as to the nominations process for executive positions at the convention is ludicrous.

So you DO know the exact circumstances of the nominations then? Enlighten us.

QuoteIt is very easy to come onto an Internet discussion forum and cast aspersions, you're right. Nearly as easy as taking a call from Pat Kenny and deciding that as you were elected to be secretary of the Mayo County board you're in a position to announce new GAA policies without a care in the world or input into your decision by anyone else, despite the nature of your announcement causing thousands of jaws to drop simultaneously across the country, and casting aspersions on thousands of members that may not agree with him.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with PRO nominations. What it possibly does show, is that your assumptions/opinions in the PRO debate are based on your grievance from a completely unrelated event.

That's not her Silky. Don't know who that is but you should probably take it down.

To be honest, this isn't a story that warrants all the posts it's getting. The clubs will be asked to nominate again since no nominations for the post of PRO were received.
People shouldn't be jumping to conclusions or coming up with conspiracy theories without foundation.
It should be let lie until the nominations are sent after Christmas.

Personally, I think half the posters here would be ideal candidates - any PRO would be thrilled to generate this amount of attention :P :D ;)

QuotePS: I've no doubt that Blast05 is correct in his summation of events

You have 'no doubt'!?
Well isn't that amazing. From far-flung Australia, Stephenite knows for a fact the exact circumstances of nominations (or lack of them) for the Mayo PRO job, when very few within the county seem to be sure. You're some man  ::)
To come onto a message forum on the internet and cast aspersions on a man's character is very easy. Especially when you can get up from in front of your keyboard and not give it another thought. Yourself and Blast would want to present the facts if you're in 'no doubt'.

QuoteRight and fitting Teachtaire, though be careful some here don't call for a commemoration of the British 'intelligence' operatives who were taken out earlier that morning.

::) ::) Where has anything like that been suggested?

QuoteTheres no smoke without fire and like ronaldo in the summer parsons did his best to get a AFL contract but looks like he may have been unsuccessful sadly and now its being spun to make him look better now that he maybe staying, stayed on for a holiday and met a AFL agent for the craic .

He didn't stay on in Australia, he came back with the rest of the squad

QuoteTubberman, you went a little overboard your self with your earlier comments.

Sligonian if you had an ounce of class/credability you would retract your earlier comment.

I went overboard with my earlier comments?? Which comment? I think I know what you're getting at but I was directly quoting this article http://www.mayonews.ie/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5299&Itemid=39

"I'm happy with how I'm going at home. I've two years done in college and another two to do. I love Mayo football, I love Charlestown football. To be honest, I don't think I'd have any interest in coming over. I haven't even thought about it. Nobody said anything about playing, you would have had to have a good series for that to happen."

I wasn't having a go at Parsons. I quoted the above to show that it seemed very strange that he'd still be in Oz looking for an AFL contract based on what he had said.

Thank God for that!! Wherever that story emerged from, it's good to know Tom had no interest in looking for an AFL contract. That's the end of that story.

Sligonian will be bitterly disappointed I'm sure.....  ;D

There nothing in the online edition of The Mayo News about this - hopefully the Aussie reporters have got it wrong, because I haven't seen it anywhere in the Irish media.
