The three prior fatal collisions have claimed 5 lives, all over the age of 30. The road in its current form is simply unfit for purpose.

No one is blaming age all the, but don't let that get in the way of your post. This reason for this accident is unknown, a single car accident involving teenagers. I don't know anyone that is against making this road safer.

But having suggestions in general about car safety and driving sensibly can also happen separately

It's a disgrace the road isn't being upgrsded and those that hold up the upgrade and object to it should be ashamed of themselves. A nightmare of a road, cars speeding by on both sides when you try to turn off, the trecharous overtaking, loads of lorries. I hate going on it.
Fact is that since the Ballygawley to Dungannon A4 was upgraded fatalities on that stretch dropped 97% and apparently one caused by motorist getting a heart attack.
Is crashes on A5 every week, obviously not all fatalities. Is awful news those two young people killed. God love their families and friends.

Well the two proceeding posts both coincidentally referenced further speed restrictions on young drivers, that is not going to quell the fatality rate on the A5.

I had a quick look at the ages of all the people who died on the road. 41% were under 30 years old. 30% of people were over age of 60. The other 29% were between 30-60 years old.

I be on that road often enough to see that speed and overtaking at bad time would account for a large portion of the deaths.

Its a poor road but that doesn't always excuse the excess speed or overtaking on blind corners.

No one said it would and speed restrictions on young drivers should be for up and down the country and not just the A5

It isn't going to change that the A5 is more dangerous than other roads, but it may reduce fatalities somewhat there along with everywhere else. The A5 still has to be engineered to a proper 21st century standard.

The same drivers are on other roads that don't have anywhere near the level of fatalities that the A5 has. Is a responsibility to drive safely anywhere but that road is a death trap.

It's never good news when you see this thread bumped up. It's sad news again.

One of the two killed was a pupil at St Ciaran's Ballygawley.

Only yesterday, the school produced this short video clip about the A5, and a photo from it was the main photo on the front page of yesterdays Irish News.

According to the BBC, she took part in this campaign video. Heartbreaking stuff.
