I'm looking on eBay and you can buy these boxes with 12 months subscription already on them.
If I buy one from England will it work here? I'm in Wicklow btw.
Is it just plug and play? I have Sky as it is.

Can you get RTE 1, RTE 2 & TG4 via them?
Is the signal received via a satelite dish or broadband?

Here is a list of the FTA channels you will get:

Signal comes from a satellite dish pointed at 28.2e (same as Sky)

Think some channels come via satellite but most (mainly sky ones) need to have a live broadband connection to receive, otherwise picture will be "scrambled" and cannot be viewed.  Up in the North, RTE 1 & 2, TV3 and TG4 need the internet connection to work.

So they tell me  ;)

How would you go about recording something? Say for the likes of the FTA channels, would you need a seprate freeview box to record something?

Sorry for the ignorance if this is stupit question. Id never heard of Dreambox until this thread.

for recording you can only record directly (for any channel) something as you watch it, and more than likely onto an external drive.

for recording and being able to watch another channel concurrently you might set up something similar to series link and in this case you require a twin receiver box, which can be anything from 150/200 up for the box alone

Good post that Fionntamhnach
I don't think i'll bother. Too many hazards. Not worth the hassle.

it is very much worth the hassle i'd say for those who do have it and are saving 100's each year, must look into it myself

I know what your saying, but TV is important, you want quality these days. There is the aggravation with recording programmes.
Plus with my luck id invest in the system and after a few months the encryption will change.
Even if the encryption didn't change the quality of the service described by Fr Jack is very concerning

Plus its only a matter of time before cases like this start to happen in the UK > http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-25347913

it might all depend on the quality of the receiver box as much as anything, a box at 50/60 quid is extremely cheap and sometimes poor quality and sometimes cloned. it might be worth it to spend the bit extra and that can help a lot to reduce freezing on cheap boxes, so they tell me

Iv had one for about a year, the lad it will soon cut off and he will need to come around and re set it every year for £80.  Does this sound right? Can I re-set it myself?

very easily, this is where these cowboys like to make their big profits. you can easily get yourself a 12 month subscription for half that and code it in to box yourself (a quick google on How-to will get you up and running). its knowing where to look. when i say coding it in, its basically typing one line in to a cccam or mgcamd.

you see whatever box it is you have, go in to linuxsat-support and find jobaids for your box type and have a play around the menu's. as for the sub cs-kings.biz can help and also provide further useful  information. it all depends how much you want to try and learn to do

Cheers Abble, im not great with technology, is there an idiots guide on how to do this anywhere?

Muzz

The only problem right now is that HD is no longer available through the card sharing method.  Some people will not care about this but sky reduced the quality of SD they send to make people move to HD subscriptions.

It will be sometime yet before all the SD boxes can be replaced with the HD boxes.  The reason why HD has gone and SD isnt is that the old thompson boxes some people have that do SD only does not have the capability to take the firmware required to change the way Sky is looking to do authentication.
