GAA Discussion / The Cancer at The Heart of the GAA
January 12, 2012, 06:46:06 PM
This is the bold black front page headline being advertised on RTE for Saturdays Irish Independent supplement.  Before I even read it I can guess the type of dregs they have scraped up if their choice of words is anything to go by.  I hope whoever wrote the article, if it  is good enough to advertise on Six One News space is good enough to mention the likes of Brian Stynes (and many more like him) who, apart from fighting a dreaded medical condition, continue to guide young lads away from the evils that are all too often told about in the same Independent and onto playing pitches.

General discussion / Car Engine Diagnostics.
October 27, 2011, 10:43:57 AM
How legal is this? Say I buy a printer for my computer it comes with a USB lead and a printer driver and utility disc.   If I buy a car and it sits down on my driveway and refuses to move I have to pay for someone to plug in a laptop and run a diagnostics program to which I have no access.  Last January I was driving a Landrover automatic yoke and it would not fire up the gears past 3rd so I brought it to a well known landrover dealer in Tallaght who assessed it for a replacement gearbox at over €2k.   Because I think Im real smart I went to another garage, who were not Landrover dealers but had the Landrover diagnostic software, they found it was a solenoid that fires the gears cost €80 was the problem and I was back on the road that day.

Question is, where can you get diagnostic software for your car and, under consumer law, are we entitled to it.  I mean, for jaysus sake how can someone pay thousands for a car and be told you can't have the software?  Anyone know where it can be bought ?  This type of yoke http://www.globalsources.com/gsol/I/Automotive-diagnostic/p/sm/1044962211.htm

General discussion / On Line Criminals
October 11, 2011, 09:49:13 AM
Suppose you are all familiar with the common scam where the man with the Indian mumba jumba accent calls your house and wanst you to turn on your computer and with your help he will log in and take all your credit card details, bank, passwords etc.  Well they were up early this morning cause I just got the call and because I had feck all to do I kept him engaged for a long time until we reached the stage where I was to "pwess Cuntrol, Windows and the letter R" and at which stage I said I could not hear and demanded a number I could ring back.

"I can give you a number , 01 45262981, but you need to do this now, immediately, go ahead, press the buttons on your keyboard now" at which point I told him that scum like him should have...... well I won't repeat. These organized crime gangs are robbing people who are not as fortunate as some of us on here when it comes to knowing about computers and disclosing information. So, the number (01 45262981) is diverted to some foreign bolthole where these scum are operating from but again most people would not know the number is diverted and would think they are calling a local company. Now, that number had to be provided by a Telecoms service provider like Eircom and the cabling records and billing information should identify the location so what I am wondering is why in the name of Jaysus the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Harcourt St do not do something about it.  I rang them there but it is voicemail where you are to leave a message so they must be all in Coppers.

Prizes for the best suggestion of what we can get up to when we call the number 01-45262981.

General discussion / Driving Without Insurance
August 06, 2011, 09:03:06 AM
Ok, I will take it as a given that none of us responsible GAA Boarders drive without insurance but my question is, what would you do if your sister, brother, relation, friend was and you knew about it?
Would you;
(a)  Tell them they are stupid and to get insured.
(b) Tell them that if they drive again without insurance that you are reporting them to the boys in blue.
(c) Report them.

I for one can't understand how anyone can go out and crash and kill or almost kill someone and not be insured. Neither can I understand how or why a perfectly innocent party has to wait for up to four years for the Motor insurance Bureau to make a settlement.

In the above case I would choose option (b), if I thought they would not hit me a box or then (c) which option would you choose?

General discussion / City Deals
June 29, 2011, 08:13:03 AM
Ok, I know its a rip off for the unfortunate business that use them but has anyone used City Deals as a customer.

Todays offer is for Newforest Golf with an offer that is hard to bate, a four course meal for two, a round of golf for two, golf trolleys, driving range balls for €60.  That means they would be paying you to eat the four course meal, apart from the golf?

GAA Discussion / GAA & Tourism - A Joke.
June 18, 2011, 01:20:10 PM
A few weeks ago I was reading the biggest joke ever where the GAA said they were going to market the GAA through Tourism Packages.

Dublin hurlers are playing the biggest game they have played in a while when they clash with Galway in Tullamore this evening at 7pm. Thinking of hopping on the train at Heuston and going to the game?  Don't do it, the last train leaves Tullamore at 8pm, around half an hour before the final whistle. The Luas connects with Heuston and many like me could literally hop on it, off at Heuston, have a pint or two before the game in Tullamore and come back again but - for some reason that is beyond me the idiots in the GAA and Iarnrod Eireann seem to have a communications embargo in place between each other. Maybe its time county boards had amore of a say as to who is employed in Croke Park.

GAA Discussion / Top Earning Manager in the GAA
April 10, 2011, 10:09:55 AM
Lads, this thread is not appropriate, and leaves the board open for a complete shellacking by anyone mentioned in it. Please be more careful.

PS. Hardstation, thanks for your concern.

From the Independent.
LAOIS star John O'Loughlin has admitted his transfer from Mountmellick to Dublin outfit St Brigid's was too good to turn down.

The UCD student, a key part of Justin McNulty's county side, has been offered a coaching job with Brigid's and will take up the role when he completes his degree in May. He will become the ninth Laois player to join a Dublin club.

"I was approached by Brigid's a couple of weeks ago," he admitted. "It's too good an opportunity to turn down and I'm going to start working with them straight away when I finish college in May.

"It means leaving Mountmellick which is tough. I had to think long and hard about it, but I don't see it as a permanent thing."

Surely this is as bad for Dublin football in terms of giving their own lads a chance to prove they can make the U21 and senior grade on the county team. If Dublin clubs are going to pack their teams with players from all over the country then  shur that is a balls of a racket altogether?

General discussion / Help with Sound System (PA)
February 03, 2011, 07:57:52 PM
Yep, sure enough, its another help request.

I want to buy a sound system and the difference between getting a good one and a bad one is dependent on how much I have to spend so if I buy from these boys I will get a better system much chaper.

I remember one time down home I was working in a garage and this eejit came in looking for "batteries for a transistor" and I asked him what type and he said he wanted a look at a few different types and then the boss shoved me outa the way and he sez to yer man, "what type of transistor did ya buy" and the clown said, I have3n't bought one yet, I am just checking the price of the batteries ! !

Now, this is the mixer I want to get  http://www.thomann.de/ie/behringer_pmp_4000.htm but I am unsure about matching the amp to the speakers.  I want it to do a fair size room and I want the speakers to have subs either built in or stand alone under with stand mount.  I want the system to be suitable for to relocate in a marquee from time to time but mainly used for a large sized room for functions.

Even if I buy all the gear wud I get a sound man to set it up first time if I paid him?

Ok, Due to the sad events of the last week I did not want to be posting about golf outings. I have got a few PM's that would indicate that there is still a little bit of confusion about dates and times and the golf outing on 29th, next Saturday.  Also want to give an update of how things are going.

Firstly we received a mail of support from Briget McAnallen and it had the stamp of Tyrone all over it because it was most encouraging and in effect it helped cast aside any doubt that this event must now go ahead. We also received a similar mail from Marie Peelo at Pieta House and they both want to acknowledge and thank www.gaaboard.com for what you are trying to do.

On Saturday next, 29th January there is a mini outing to Johnstown PGA Golf Club. The purpose of this is to garner bodies who will help with the organizeation of the main event in May.  Details are available at www.avonrigolf.com

Once this outing is over we will announce the details in terms of pricing for the charity event. We already have a fair idea but this outing is a way of extending the courtesy to anyone who feels they can help in any way rather than us been seen to be on a solo run.

The cost of the outing next Saturday is €50.  That price includes a Steak Dinner back at Avon Ri and your round of golf on the PGA Course. There is music that nite with the regular lad playing but as well as that we have got "A Band Named Sue" doing a Johnny Cash thing. If you are from GAABOARD.COM and just want to come and play and go home direct from the golf course after you have had a chat with us about the charity event, then to be fair,  this is what I propose:

Instead of paying €50 we can give you the round of golf for cost at €40, just say GAABOARD.COM when signing in.  If you are prepared to become involved or help in any way in getting teams this is the least we should do for you next Saturday - considering you will have petrol expenses in just coming to the event and are not on €140,000 P.a. like one of our newly appointed managers in the GAA that I was told about last week !!

General discussion / Another Strange Request for Help.
January 15, 2011, 10:00:41 AM
Now here is another strange one.  D'ye see this contraption, they were fairly common throughout the country until a few of the companies that owned them went bust.

You can program them with a laptop to change the message like for example if you pulled her across the road in Portlaoise you could type in "Slow, Sam Arriving Shortly" or whatever.  To do so there is a software program called CENTRALLO but when I got that it asks for USER and PASSWORD and Im after spending weeks trying to get into it.   Anyone?

(PS  Bud did not go out on tractor in dark of night and rob one of these)

General discussion / Why does everyone hate the Dubs?
January 08, 2011, 03:36:01 PM
Maybe 'hate' is too strong a word but from the time I was a nipper all I ever remember was a constant form of hatred for Dublin and if I were to be honest that grew into my head as well. even though I was living in Dublin from 18yrs old.   It was always ABD, anyone but Dublin and Dirty Dublin etc, etc, and I still know of people down the country who nearly get into the TV's in the pubs to shout abuse at Dublin or rub their hands gleefully when they are being beaten?

Where did it all start, or when?  Does it go back to 1916 when we thought the Dubs were out on the roof of the GPO robbing the lead while the rest of the country were inside fighting or does it go back to the time of the Teddyboys or where did it begin.  Has every county their own particular reason, I think in Laois it began either over a fight in O'Moore Park or because John Timmons took a sideline ball (a corner) in Dr Cullen Park and Mickey Whelan headed the ball into the net aka Wayne Rooney?  That still does not explain the same venom meeted out to the poor ould Dubs from other counties though so where did it all begin to reach an extent that it is generally 1 against 31 ?  Just wondering?

General discussion / Kevin Barry GAA Club.
December 23, 2010, 10:25:46 PM
Instead of doing a barbecue today I decided to do a bit of a clean out and I found a 'program' or booklet that I got at the Requim Mass for Kevin Barry when he was re-interred in 2001.  Nothing spectacular but a quick google shows there are a few Kevin Barry GAA Clubs and maybe someone in one of those is interested in having this. If so PM me and I will stick it in the post rather than throw it away. The front cover says Requim Mass for Kevin Barry, Pro-Cathedral etc.  I found no pictures of Laois lifting the Sam Maguire in the Hogan Stand.

General discussion / 2011. What do you wish for?
December 21, 2010, 01:26:19 PM
A few of mine;

That all GAA Players at all levels will have jobs and be able to afford 40 pairs of shoes and shopping trips to New York, or even York.

That there are no more tragedies on the playing fields and off them like some of the ones we saw happen this year including those involving county players.

That the GAA get more involved in our national day, Saint Patricks Day and spend a penny on parades in our major cities and allow admission to Croke Park for a fiver to everybody on Paddy's Day or else have a Charity Shield game and charge a tenner and give half to a nominated charity.

That GAA HQ can cop on to the fact that the new Director General of RTE, Noel Curran is a GAA man through and through and goes to games in Croker and that when he takes up his position in January they use him correctly to balance things between RTE and TV3 to advertise all games in the county championships instead of just those held in Croke Park.

That Dublin win the Leinster hurling championship and there is a Leinster team in the AIF Final !!

EDIT: Meant to say that I hope also the GAABOARD.COM Charity Golf Outing makes a good few bob for the chosen charities.

General discussion / Bud's Parking Ticket Scam
December 17, 2010, 09:50:01 AM
Yesterday I was in a south Dublin suburb and I was toddling along into the building society when I meets yer man with the ticket machine for non display of parking ticket heading my way. It is an area opposite apartments and many people think it is free but I had my ticket got and on display anyway.  He goes over and slaps a ticket on a nice SUV and when I came back there was this lovely lady standing at her car in shock with ticket in hand.  Here, sez I handing her my ticket, I bought this three minutes before he gave you your ticket so just put it with the fine you have got and send it in as an appeal and say it must have fell on the floor when you closed the door.  That's great sez she, thanks very much.  Will that work and if it does could you not wait and get a ticket from someone in a similar situation if you got delayed or caught out?
