Title: 1933-52
Post by: seafoid on April 18, 2023, 05:00:36 PM
This is a really interesting period in the history of the championship.

3 Connacht and Ulster teams won their first all Irelands. Together they won 10 all Irelands, or 50% of all Irelands during the period.
And they never won another all Ireland. Roscommon's last was in 1944, Mayo's in 1951 and Cavan's in 1952.

It's mad.

Perhaps you can include all provinces and extend your term to Louth winning in 1957. I'm looking forward to the Mayo-Louth final this year.

If you went back to 1925, you'd see Galway won their 1st title in a makey-up championship played out in 1926.

Not a bad suggestion but Louth won their first all Ireland in 1910.

Cavan, Mayo and Ros were like a FRED process for something like a solar flare or gamma-ray burst.
Fast Rise, Exponential Decay .

And they won 2 during the period but they didn't stop at 1952

I wouldn't be so harsh on Cavan.

This is the non GAA section Seafood. Some stats for you on Cavan...

Population pre Famine - 243,000
Population 1936 - 76k
Population 1946 - 70k
Population 1956 - 62k
Population 1966 - 54k
Population 1971 - 52k (lowest ever population)
Population 1981 - 54k
Population 1991 - 53k
Population 2002 - 56k
Population 2011 - 64k
Population 2016 - 76k
Population 2022 - 81k

While Cavan won their last AI in 1952, they were still very competitive in the 60s, splitting all Ulster championships between them and Down. Down managed 3 AI in the 60 so Cavan were well up there. The 70s and 80s were where it really fell apart and you just have to look at the drop in population which of course was emigration and so mostly the youth of the county. I would wager Roscommon would have similar numbers. Mayo probably shows a similar % drop but I think the county would have a much bigger population than Cavan.
