Title: Moone Boy
Post by: joe bloggs on September 22, 2012, 08:59:22 AM
I can't stand the Late Late so last night I flicked over to sky one to watch their new Irish comedy Moone Boy.
I have to say I quite enjoyed it. It is not a laugh a minute funny but it is amusing. Also it probably appeals to me as it is set just over 20 years ago and the main character is exactly the same age I was then.
Fair play to sky for giving Irish comedy a chance.

Is it Irish? I saw the trailers and assumed it was British with an Irish actor in it. Hard to get anything like that sanctioned by RTE I'd say. Sure wasn't Fr. Ted even Channel 4?

Ah, keep up with the nuacht it's only happening a stone's throw from your lands! Chris O'Dowd brought filming back to his home town of Boyle earlier in the year. All the out-doors scenes were shot there. The show is set in Boyle in 1989.

British production company but (co-)written by O'Dowd, full of Irish actors and filmed in Ireland. Pretty Irish.

While it's not exactly side splitting comedy it still shows what a unique good humoured race of people we Rossies are.
I see they're filming the 1989 St Patrick's Day parade next week some day in Boyle and are looking for cars, tractors etc from the 1980s to make it look authentic.

Probably wont take much to make Roscommon look like its 1989 ;D

Watched 3 episodes tonight back to back. Mildly amusing. The wee lad is a good actor but Deirdre O'Kane has always grated on me nerves.

Didnt realise O'Dowd played in goals for the Roscommon minors in 1996. He was hilarious describing Shane 'Cake' Curran on The Sunday Game. When Cake offered him goalkeeping advice O'Dowd declined it declaring he'd "rather get advice from a drunk clown".

They don't make them like Cake anymore.

Aha! So he is. Sure if he has time to be getting on the telly he might as well do it on The Sunday Game too, right??

I'd be afraid to watch that myself because of the O'Kane factor and what it might do to my psychological equilibrium.

That was an enjoyable clip. I'd raid the piggy bank in a big way to procure footage of that famous penalty by Cake in a minor final. Does anybody know if it exists anywhere?

Finally getting around to watching it now. Very, very charming and I love how much of the real slang and language of the area O'Dowd and co. have put into it, and that Sky1 allowed them to leave so much in.

No RTE comedy has ever felt as genuine to its world as Moone Boy and that's yet another indictment of their incredible record of failure with scripted shows. Regardless, O'Dowd has become a fantastic comedic actor - he also has a show-stealing role in Girls on HBO, which is far better and far more universally watch-able than the name suggests.

Just read a third season is to be commissioned - clearly Sky are very happy with what they've got on all fronts from Moone Boy. Boyle and the county in general need to get their arses in gear to capitalise on this level of publicity, it's absolutely unprecedented in the county's history.

charming

The exact word I'd use to describe it. It's not earth shattering, it's not Father Ted or IT Crowd but I do find myself smiling throughout, probably a lot of it through nostalgia to be honest.

Great show, genuinely funny...  Unbelievable that Sky commissioned a second series before the first was aired and a third series a couple of episodes into the airing of the first!

Wow. Just watched the second episode. Love the detail O'Dowd is lavishing on the show - the paper the women read with the poll results is an 'actual' Roscommon Hearld from the era the show is set in. Even integrating the actual election into the show was a bold move. Mary's acceptance speech gave me goosebumps, nevermind the fantastic juxtaposition involved.

I'm totally biased and proud of the show because of its roots, but even outside of that it really is, by some distance, the best comedy series produced by Irish talent since Father Ted.

Well friggin' done!

Herself thinks it's the cutest thing she's ever seen. Although she constantly suggests that I had to be like that as a youngster.

It's funny stuff, as someone said earlier - very charming.

Charming indeed, but very clever and perceptive comedy as well. Top marks, even allowing for the Deirdre O'Kane marmalade-between-your-fingers factor.

The youngfella is annoying and Chris O Dowd's accent does my head in, plus I actually don't think it's very funny.

If you think O'Dowd's accent is bad in this you should have heard him on the Late Late Show !!
Never heard anyone from up that way talking like that in me whole life.
You'd have to worry about Sillyferus and Dorano though  :o

I thought it borrowed a bit too much from Father Ted. It's brave to try to make the Irish-Catholic-Priest-Mass stuff funny and different after FT. I didn't think it quite made it, though the Godfather/mob analogy was fairly good. It was still funnier than anything else I saw on TV this week, though, apart from reruns of HIGNFY, even the repeats of which still make me laugh more than anything else. That says something either about me or about the standard of new comedy on TV.

It's me, isn't it?

It's been my favourite episode too - I thought the organist was great (reminded me a bit of Father Trendy, rather than Father Ted), and I really liked the weary-of-everything priest.

I loved the 'hymn' that went something like 'Jesus was a sound fellah, killed by Pontius Pilate and a bunch of angry Jews'.

Here's some excellent comedy I came across recently. That Mitchell and Webb (the 2 boys from peep show) sound. It's just audio but it's hilarious and it gives the eyes a welcome rest in this age of the laptop. There's about 20 episodes on there so if ya like it you're sorted for a while. Looking forward to my favorite comedy Peep Show returning. I'm enjoying Moone Boy and the return of Modern Family - The 1st episode of the new series wasn't great but the second one was.

How did they manage to get Paul Rudd in the last episode?
